I knew Alec and Kevin- I lived three houses down from his father’s house. We waited at the same bus stop together with other kids every morning. The Monday after the murder took place (before I knew he was the killer) I remember waiting for the school bus and saying something to him like, 'crazy shit that went down huh?' And he said, 'yeah' and then got on the bus. I often think, what if he broke into my home instead of Kevin’s and killed my family or me. The local police had called in the FBI after a few weeks of no leads on the case. I was interviewed by two FBI agents on my parent’s back porch about Alec. The year before this murder took place my parents asked me why I never invited Alec over (with him living just 3 houses away) and I told them he is strange and that, 'I could see him doing a columbine one day’. My mom told the FBI about that comment which is why they wanted to talk with me. It was just a feeling I got…. Kevin who was killed was the sweetest kid. He was super nice, helped me in school, and was highly highly intelligent. I wonder what he would have been when he grew up- something great. In the two months before the case was solved, the daughter who escaped went to live with her aunt and uncle. This wasn’t made public…The community wondered if the killer would try to kill Maggie next. The irony was, her aunt and uncle lived in our neighborhood and would go on runs. She would run by Alec’s house not knowing he was the killer. He could have seen her run by many times. This experience has made me deeply interested in the psychology of killers. What a tragedy. RIP Kevin, his Mom, and Dad, and god bless Maggie.

I saw this case on a true crime show. Alec had indicated that he killed his friends family because they were too perfect. His family wasn’t perfect and he hated that Kevin‘s family was perfect. They had both parents in the home and the parents and the children love each other and enjoyed spending time together. They did things such as watch movies on television together and eat popcorn. Initially Maggie was a suspect. When she was retelling what she saw to the police, she did not act as if her whole family had just been murdered. Plus why didn’t the killer come and attack her? It was also realize that the killer took their time trying to wash up. To the police this meant that the killer knew that there was no one else in the house so they could take the time. Maggie was in shock. That is why her demeanor was matter-of-fact and calm. The reason why Alex did not attack her is because she was away at college and he Didn’t know that she had came back home. He did not know she was there. If he did, he would have killed her too.

Personally, I feel there are all different levels of narcissism. the same way I feel there are levels of bipolar. I'm not a doctor but I've been around enough mentally ill people (mostly artist friends) to have noticed distinct differences in bipolar and schizophrenic people. I feel some have milder symptoms than others, what one might do maybe another wouldn't do. If you've ever been around a person with narcissistic rage it can be a living nightmare when they go off, and it's usually over nothing, but most narcissistic people probably wouldn't go so far as to kill. I’d like to add, since it’s a theme in this case, that the rage is perhaps the most distressing part. No one knows what this is. I was under the impression misophonia wasn’t officially recognized. It wasn’t when I was a kid. As a teenager I honestly feel like I could’ve been this guy. It’s no excuse and I’m so thankful I’ve never hurt anyone. I hate violence, but you really can be made into a cornered animal just by taking public transit. You will want to do ANYTHING to get rid of the threat. It compounds with and creates its own traumas.

I googled a bit, and this indeed seems to be how it went. "Their college-age daughter Margaret "Maggie" Haines told police she was awakened by a noise about 2 a.m. and went into her parents' bedroom, where she said she found her father lying on the bed and her mother sitting nearby. The mother quietly told her to get help, according to police." The father was already dead, stabbed in the heart. The mother had been stabbed in the stomach. Alec later returned to the bedroom to slit the mother's throat, so he must still have been inside when Maggie managed to get out of the house. The brother put up a big fight, so that may have given Maggie enough time. Also, Alec apparently did not know that Maggie was home from college.

Contraception does not prevent serial killers anymore than someone murdering a baby because that baby could have been Hitler. It is all a statistical probability, of which, the probability of your child growing up to become a serial killer or murderer is less than 1%.

If the dogs lead you to a road and stop, they are following the track scent, not the air scent. It is the handler's job to reset them along the road to find the track that was interrupted by the road. The police and handler were wrong and assumed he had gotten into a car; the DOGS were not. This is just an example of police being extremely inexperienced at handling tracking K9s that weren't trained to track an air scent, or they had set the dogs too late and the air scent was gone.

*The reason that Alex did not share his motive was because he didn’t know what his motive was* … This is most important point made in this video (IMHO) and I wish the entire world could hear it (not just for this case, but for so many other cases). It’s something so many people don’t understand- that often murderers do not themselves know why they killed. When the victims’ families want to know why, I think it would be incredibly invaluable, if someone (police, etc.) told them: “The killer doesn’t know why he did it, so we can’t answer that question. You will never have that closure. I am so very sorry.”

Hello! I have been studying nutrition and how it affects our health, as I have Crohn's disease. I have read how vit. D therapy has been used to treat mental illnesses, particularly schizophrenia. If a mother does not get enough vit D while pregnant her baby can develop the mental illness. Some people don't really examine their diets, assuming most foods are okay. The standard American diet and the food processing techniques used can really challenge our ability to absorb nutrients.

This kids was a psychopath, well on his way to becoming a serial killer. Thank goodness the first girl escaped her home before he could get her. And thank goodness the second girl called the cops while he was on the phone with her. What I can't understand is why a father, who knows his son has "dark thoughts" and tried to strangle his little brother, would gift him a hunting knife. I guess it's better than some of these parents who gift their disturbed child a gun, but he still somehow had access to a gun when he made the threats to the girl over the phone.

People are not " broken." There is anti social personality traits, sociopathic traits, but it's not broken. He would not recognize that he was missing " happiness ", and would not believe he is deficient in anything .

Actually a very good question. Its incredible that though even siblings can be wildly different from each other, that still something a great grandparent did a century back can still have an affect on your life currently. I think a lot more research needs to be done on generational “trauma”

I think there’s a big element of “control” here. The story of him as a kid counting 2,3 to his dad shows his dominance and desire for total control. His ability to pull off the scheme required alot of patience and control however when he realized it didn’t lift the feeling of “emptiness” as described that’s when he quits. Thus he clearly has zero regard for anyone other then himself

In a case like this, the motive indeed can only have been incredibly stupid. So ultimately it probably does not really matter that he did not tell. Suppose Kevin had done something bad to Alec like steal his girlfriend, it would in no way have explained the reaction. In all likelihood the only reason he picked Kevin and his family was that he knew the house.
