Well even if you took Lars and Alisa out of the equation, Lars and/or Reina would end up being in the game as the antagonists regardless cause of sequels. I think Reina being an antagonist and biologically related to Heihachi is unnecessary, and at this point, i felt like "well if Heihachi and Kazuya are the main threats throughout the franchise, then Tekken should end around Tekken 8, otherwise the developers would end up throwing in a new antagonist out of nowhere. I say that Tekken 8 SHOULD end with Reina being the last antagonist cause it wouldn't make much sense where the plot is mostly just gonna be about another antagonist whos either related to the Mishimas or outside of that to take over the Mishima Zaibatsu, typically rule the world or destroy it. Reina should close the franchise out as the final main antagonist.

Despite how popular Asuka was, and still is, her replacing Jun and discovering her Kazama cleansing powers to save Jin and be more involved with the Mishima story has long passed. *Tekken 8 SPOILERS* ... The devil gene has been removed from Jin and Kazuya now, so that opportunity is over. There is Reina, I suppose (and Jun is now supposedly still alive after all this time) but if Asuka has been ignored for this long, we all just need to accept that the writing staff only know how to make one-dimensional characters, and don't care about growing anyone who isn't directly involved with Jin or Kazuya. I'm not even an Asuka player or fan, and I get annoyed by how wasted her character is. The great irony between Asuka's and Lili's rivalry is that their interactions were one-sided: Lili would seek out and force herself into Asuka's life, and Asuka would get annoyed and want nothing to do with her. Now, Lili is allowed to have an ending without Asuka, but Asuka's is stuck pandering to their worthless dynamic. Asuka has lost, and sadly, I don't think there is any hope for her now.

I saw that there were extra cutscenes in Tekken 8’s gallery containing special story cutscenes for Jun and Leo, so maybe they have something planned for more characters? And that’s a strong “maybe.” Unlike Bandai Namco, I’m being fairly generous. Really, the only good thing that came from Asuka VS Lili was that I made Kill La Kill customs for them to amuse myself and my friends. That’s it.

Here's why it's impossible to "naturally" incorporate a new character into a rerelease: 1. As seen in the Persona rereleases, people will just be familiar with the original, they will notice every alteration, and they will feel "unnatural." 2. If you build the story with this character in mind, now the original suffers from missing a character, so just release it as the original, thus, no rerelease. 3. If you introduce an alternative story, it's basically a new game then.

Long ago, I thought up a better non-character assassinating way to make Jin cause World War 3. So Dragunov was introduced in Tekken 5 DR, with a plan to capture devil and use its power. What should have happened is that G-Corp/Russia got the data from Heihachi's Devil-Human Integration Program during the JACK attack at the intro of Tekken 5, Dragunov is placed in charge of collecting the devil gene for it. Jin discovers this and sends the Tekken force on a covert mission to Dragunov's base/lab to destroy the data, they get exposed and Jin is told to stand down and surrender, instead he refuses as the world's armies gear up to take down a rogue company. There Jin causes World War 3 without character assassination. You can even keep Azazel as the final boss

Tekken 8 legitimately has to be celebrated for its condensing of this long long plotline going back to Tekken 1, answering questions and wrapping up Loose ends in the story. For example for Years i was really confused on why we needed Azazael/Claudio and Zafina and legitimately 1 mission in Tekken 8 actually ended up answering all of those questions for me. Finally to resolving the Devil Gene feud between Kazuya and Jin,with my favorite moment being the final battle against Kazuya after you both burned the Devil gene out of their bodies and went back to straight up Brawling.

Not having a tournament and not doing anything with that really slowed a lot of character stories down imo. Without the tournament, about 90% of the cast just don't have a reason to do anything. And because they don't join the resistance or whatever, they pretty much spent an entire game with no development at all. Steve, for example, joins up with Paul and Law for the tournament which never happens and then by 7, is right back to the "who is my mother"? Plotline. It's just disappointing.

It makes a bit more sense then Snake let on. Azazel was going to awaken eventually and Jin believed that if he awakened when he was dead (since that was the plan after killing his father) then the world would be fucked. So Jin was basically trying to save the world from what would have been damnation if he let well enough alone.

Lars feels contrived in T6, but at the very least he serves a narrative purpose, even if he's miscast. The fact he only exists because Heihachi wanted to prove that he doesn't have devil gene is a solid foundation for a character, and it could go somewhere. But then comes T7 and turns out Heihachi knew it all along, because it was Kazumi who had the devil gene, which retroactively makes Heihachi look stupid and begs the question what really is going on with Lars? And if that wasn't bad enough T8 introduced Reina who is supposedly Heihachi's daughter, which... how? She looks much younger than Kazuya who was about 8 or so when Kazumi died. So she can't be her daughter. Which means Heihachi had another child after Lars and somehow this one had devil gene. So either he was astronomically unlucky, finding another woman with a devil gene, or he has it himself and it not manifesting on Lars was just a happy coincidence. But that raises even more questions...

It doesn't help with how contrived it is that Heihachi, of all people, got a child with another woman with the devil gene - apparently he just got astronomically unlucky. If the number of people given the devil gene was high enough for that to be believable, then there should way more of them than just Reina. And even if that were the case, how is it that Heihachi never realized Reina or her mother have devil gene and kill them like he did with Kazumi, or at least try like with Kazuya? From a meta point of view, it's obvious why Reina isn't covered in scars from a failed attempt at killing her, but narratively it doesn't make any sense. Especially since Heihachi sired Lars for this exact reason - to make sure he isn't the one with the devil gene. He likely observed both Lars and his mother for any signs of it, but apparently with Reina and her mother he didn't. But why? And if Reina's mother is potentially as dangerous as Kazumi, then where is she? The story doesn't even explain why Reina is so obsessed with awakening her devil powers. Her ending suggest she wants to continue Heihachi's legacy... the man who tried to put an end to the very same thing she tries to become. Add the fact she was somehow never heard of before, and her only purpose is gameplay one - to maintain Heihachi's move set. Even then, Heihachi could be relegated to flashbacks, like Jun was for the most part. So Reina's inclusion is both contrived and pointless, other than maybe setting her up as the antagonist in the next game, and not an interesting one at that.

I know Jun is alive, but in the story she's mostly in flashbacks or in spirit form, except for the ending. If they don't want to find a new voice actor for Heihachi that is of course their choice. Reina from is easely the most pointless thing added to the Mishima Saga. Warning spoilers even if this is obvious : So Reina is once again a child of Heihachi... Putting aside that she's look even younger than Xiaoyu wich implied some really weird things, we are now at 4 of them ( i know that Lee is adoptive but i still count). For Unicron sake, the story despite wanting to be just about this fucked up family already don't want to focus about kazuya's first introduced brother and Lars after T6 feels like a toy-focused show character when he gets just a spotlight once and after he just serve at the background. "But Reina is not like that, she's a Mishima girl with devil gene first and the hidden biological girl of Heihachi secondly and seems to be evil unlike Lars." So she's just a weird amalgam of Lars and Kazuya with the devil gene girl take from Kazumi. What his the point with her in the narrative ? (for gameplay we know it's just for keeping moveset.) Nothing in her story was new for the story and worst she contradicts this. In T7 Kazumi was the reasons of what Kazuya and Jin have devil power and Reina is way too young for being her daughter. Wich means that's heihachi have devil gene ? Nope because Lars was the living proof that's not the case. Gee, axe us...

As cool as the concept is, the one thing you have to remember is the time zone this was released. Tekken only gave snippets of it's story through endings while in 2006 MK Armageddon had a full on Konquest Story Mode set in it's present time building up to the intro. Tekken 6's Scenario Campaign felt similar in it's approach but modern day fighting game campaigns as we know it began with MK vs DC in late 2008 while already in development Tekken 6 console version came out almost a year later. Then it really forever changed with Mortal Kombat, then Injustice: Gods Among Us 2 years later and MKX 2 years after that. With a low budget thanks to the low sales of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (Fantastic game) Namco had to keep up with the trend with creating a similar Campaign style while restricted with a low budget, creating most of it with in game model cutscenes, recycling arcade intros as cutscenes and narrator still images with voiceovers with making matters worse Injustice 2 came out 1 month prior with yet again a big budget campaign with next generation technology and realistic faces. Finally after all that with Tekken 7 getting alot of sales later in it's life cycle and loads of money with all the DLC, they're able to create the big budget story campaign Tekken fans deserved with Tekken 8 and it was great fun. While in theory this video's story sounds great, it was a different time back then

Tekken has always been hit or miss for me really Street fighter has stayed a better fighting game because the characters in 6 storylines are done and there just chilling there arcade story are just what's going on in the world tour after the fact i want to play tekken 8 in my opinion 8 does a lot right focusing on jin and Kazuya Rivalry and jin finally being free of the devil Gene is a good ending for him yeah i know how bad tekken story is but let's be real between Mk1 and Tekken i'll take tekken story any day

​@@vaggos2003The simplest way to explain it is that _Bleach_ has literally over a hundred-ish "prominent" named characters, but very few of those characters generally ever get to do anything substantial since the main _Bleach_ story tends to only ever truly focus on like a dozen of them max (and "living" meme Kenpachi). While it would just be an unfortunate numbers and time management game that basically ever piece of fiction has to deal with, it was further complicated by two more issues: 1. Even the main cast tending to stagnate power-wise at times until usually Ichigo (the main character) and just Ichigo got a power boost even more out of nowhere than the usual Shonen power up bullshit. (And when he wasn't, Ichigo probably took the most vicious and frequent losses of any prominent shonen main character in recent years.) 2. The _Bleach_ author, Kubo Tite, IIRC admitted that whenever he hit a bit of writer's block with the plot, he tended to make a bunch of new cool characters to push the plot forward who tended to quickly fall to the wayside after their brief use and barely ever get to do anything more later even if they survived.

I think that having every character "pick a side" in the conflict would have been a bad move that would've lead to plenty of contrived scenarios. To use an example from video, I just can't imagine Steve working for someone like Kazuya or Paul working for Jin. Same goes for few other characters. I think that maybe better solution would be to, in addition to main campaign, have another campaign that deals with Tekken tournament. This campaign would feature characters that are not involved in any of the Mishima nonsense. As for explanation of why there's a tournament during World War, I'd say that tournament campaign takes place before the main one. It's not necessarily a great solution, but I think that it could've worked.

4:02 I keep thinking about that Armor King plot in T6. If I remember correctly, that plot was split into 3 endings (King, Marduk and Armor King) aaanndd...nothing came out of it? Waiting about a decade for the sequels sure was rewarding... By the time they make Tekken 9, Kazuya's voice actor may actually die. I mean, just hearing his voice aging between 7 and 8 is pretty wild since almost 9 years passed between the two releases.

As much I have Tekken 6 bias for gameplay, stages, and music... I agree the story is not good. Jin's reason going to war and Lars being the protag sure was questionable. Im really glad you brought this up. Some people thought Tekken 6 was good but it wasn't, i had mixed feelings about Jin being evil and the promotions , set up for this game was huge. The hype was amazing then it was ruined by the final product. The promotion of Jin vs kazuya was something i wanted to see they ruined with Lars and Alisa, heihachi was still alive, and barely saw Jin and Kazuya. Harada ruining Jin's character and mission to destroy the Mishima bloodline. This game was more than wasted potential it was a slap towards Tekken fans and Tekken 7, blood vengeance, etc made things worse and put a black spot on the franchise ever since then Tekken 8 redeem it.

Tekken 4 and Tekken 5 had at least have good stories not only for the main cast, also the supporting cast and minor characters. Tekken 6 is so confusing to new players with the lore, Tekken 7 botched the story when they made Heihachi a sympathetic villain instead of cruel and vindictive villain he was plus the support and minor characters stories got shafted really badly. Tekken 8 despite some good moments in the story unfortunately had problems that was present since Tekken 6. Asuka and Jin not saying a word to each other about their heritage and relationship with their Kazama family, Asuka again shafted for Reina which admit love Reina and they didn't make her girl boss but come on, Asuka should have being there with her cousin, we could have had Yoshimitsu settling his rivalry with Bryan but no they weren't even present during the war between the rebel forces and G Corp. Even the character endings are still shocking despite being better than Tekken 7. Tekken 6 had narrative problems that got spread to Tekken 7 and Tekken 8. Tekken will always be my favourite gaming franchise but there's a lot of problems with the lore.

Lars and Alisa have designs and characterization than 90% of the rest of the Tekken cast, especially Alisa. Unlike most of the cast, Namco actually puts real effort in consistently giving these 2 character development after their debut game.

The story is just about one bad guy (Heihachi) who posed a threat since Tekken 1 up to Tekken 7. Currently, the story around Tekken 8 picks up with Kazuya who ends up being the main antagonist after Heihachi, anything else after is likely Reina who will end up being the new main antagonist considering shes Heihachi's daughter who has the intention of picking up after where Heihachi left off.

It's games like Tekken that make me wish fighting games would explore having multiple smaller stories in a game rather than a single grand story. Bringing a roster as varied and differently motivated as a fighting game roster all onto the same plot tends to cause so many problems, Underserved characters, convoluted writing to get everyone there, timelines and deaths shuffling cast members out of the story.... Like, imagine if Street Fighter 5's story had 3 plots that intersect in various places: The anti-bison taskforce with Guile, Chun-Li, Juri, Nash and everyone shadoloo associated, The Satsui No Hado plotline with Ryu, the people who care about him, Akuma, Kage and Nicalli, A tournament for Laura, Zangief, Mika and the others who don't have a place in the remaining plots. The plotlines can even bump into eachother from time to time, like Balrog and Ed being in the tournament until things start going down with Shadoloo and they have to leave unexpectedly... and you could even have the tournament arc being run by the Secret Society to get Urien in on it. It's basically the components of the story that are already in SF5, but without the convolution of some random rich girl spearheading the hero side taskforce.

If you ever do Tekken 7 Wasted Plotential I got an idea for it besides the obvious cut out the reporter and Akuma. Have it factor around the King of Iron Fist Tournament I theorize that 7s plot must have been changed half way through to accommodate wanting to add Akuma to it since they have Heihachi announce the king of iron fist tournament 7 but then after the Akuma stuff decided to cancel it and just use Akuma to expose Kazuya instead. The tournament not only has been a Tekken story tradition to the point where it still happened in 6 despite the plot not revolving around it and it becoming important again in 8 but having it would also parallel Tekken 1 and 2 and sets up the final battle between Kazuya and Heihachi as the ultimate culmination of their rivalry rather then just a random ass call out. The stuff with Jin Lars Alisa and Lee are fine as is since that subplot was just an excuse as to why they aren't participating in the main plot which can easily be applied to the tournament setting. Thats the main bulk of what I'd change since I'm on the fence on Heihachi character arc in it but I feel like the tournament would have been a much better setting.

Haven't looked at Tekken 8 yet, so I might be wrong...But does Tekken even HAVE a plan? T1 was a revenge story where the hero isn't heroic. T2 followed up on those events, but it felt more like a good idea they came up with there rather than something they always knew they were going to do (but I could be wrong, since Devil was a secret skin in T1). T3 was a time-skip with new fighters, which leads me to believe that even if T1 and T2 were intended to happen from the get-go, T3 was them making up something new to do, albeit doing a good job of it. T4 is the same thing, with only Jin's struggle with the Devil Gene as likely an intentional through-line. T5, I'm sure, was just Tekken coming up with some cool thing to do because they probably prioritized getting a lot of characters into the game over having a plan for most of them. T1-4 feel like a "street-level superhero" story, where the strongest people around could kill regular humans but would just be a competent villain to Spider-Man; T5 introduced Naruto agility and Fist of the North Star strength (not a good comparison, since I haven't seen Kenshiro level a mountain, but even mere one-off villains who can shatter boulders with their faces; I just couldn't think of a better anime to compare T5 to) out of nowhere and pulled Jinpachi from that same void and immediately attributed the Devil Gene to him (which, in retrospect, isn't as good a move as saying Kazumi is the source, even though I'm not a fan of T7). To me, T5 feels like a filler arc or an anime movie or a "Tekken Gaiden" that happened to be canon and T6 followed suit, only following up on Jin's ending even though everything about Jin in T5 defies his path in T4. If T7 had any consideration for prior games or a solid idea for the future, it was lost on me, because that game retconned Jinpachi's involvement and Heihachi's personality, seemingly to make it easier to do a drama about Heihachi and Kazuya having a deep hatred of each other (which they stopped having by T3, even after Kazuya's resurrection). T7's main story doesn't feel like they had a plan to pick up where 6 left off or set the ground-work for 8, it feels like a new writer's run on a long-standing comic book that throws out old details just to tell a story the writer liked telling even if it didn't fit. I wouldn't say Tekken is spinning its wheels, it's just doing what it's always been doing but they ran out of good ideas. No offense to fans of T5 through 7, as those games have good bits in them too, even if they feel thought-up on the spot rather than pre-planned.

I disagree with Tekke 6 being where things go downhill, since I think Tekken 7 is the WORST story wise and where several things don't make sense, since it retcons character motivations and backstories, such as Heihachi's motivation being inconsistent for mistreating Kazuya. For example, in the original Tekken 1 story line. Heihachi believed his son was too weak to ever inherit his conglomerate, and decided to throw a 5 year old Kazuya into a ravine, and thought that if he were truly strong enough, he would be able survive the fall and climb back up. Tekken 7 retconned Heihachi motivation for throwing Kazuya, which was a test of strength into being about trying to rid the devil gene when that was NEVER a factor in the previous games. I have issue with this, since it not only retcons the previous games events, but changes a fundamental aspect that we know about Heihachi's character, since he's always been shown to be a ruthless self centered character that would do things that he felt worked best for him, and didn't care about ridding the world of the devil gene. Heck , in Tekken 4 Heihachi's goal was to create a new life form by splicing Ogre's genome, and devil gene with his own. And that's not even getting into Tekken 7 inconsistent story presentation. Tekken 8 Story wasn't much better, the biggest improvement was more spectacle and better choreographed fights, but the writing is arguably just as bad as 7 for a MULTITUDE of reasons. One reason is because of how unrealistic it was. For instance, in the fact that Jin is responsible for the deaths of MILLIONS of innocent people including WOMEN and CHILDREN and NONE of his friends give him shit for it. Keep in mind characters like Ling and Asuka are supposed to represent the pure and kind hearted characters, with Asuka specifically having a strong sense of justice, and technically Ling hasn't met Jin since T4 canon wise I believe, so this was a good opportunity for her to show her dissapointment in all the things the man's done while still understanding the necessity of him giving the situation, since he's the only one with the power to beat his father. So the fact that she has nothing to say on this dark subject is silly. Heck, Alisa who outside of Miguel, suffered the most out of cast under Jin's actions in T6, and the guy never officially apologized to her for his evil actions toward herself. Then there's the end of the main story in the fact that there is absolutely no way the surviving countries with their governments would be cool with Jin roaming around after all the crap he pulled. And it doesn't matter if Jin destroyed an even greater evil in Kazuya, the fact is the man has TONS of blood on his hands of people from various other countries and I imagine in a real world scenario they wouldn't let would Jin did slide and demand justice( just look at the outrage over Russia/Ukraine and Israel and Palestine for further proof). And the problem is Jin's ending (presumed to be the canon one) sees him getting off relatively easy. I also was disappointed that Most of the cast STILL hasn't developed as characters at all, and are just as one dimensional as Kazuya. Finally, Reina not being foreshadowed in the series at all despite the story signifigance she has in this game and to what's to come is annoying too. Tekken IMO has the worst story of any fighting game I've ever played, since it seems like the developers aren't even trying to right well developed and consistent characters, and are more focused on just visual spectacle. Compared to stories like BlazBlue where the opposite is true. Yes, you can make fun of how convoluted the plot is all day long, but at least in that fighting game series MANY of the cast go through arcs and get TONS of character development. And one dimensional characters are few there. Just my two cents.

And people say the gameplay only matters, but two things. One: I wouldn't want to play as most of these flat characters since I am not really playing fighting games to be competitive like everyone else. Two: I barely play fighting games anymore. So the best I watch is its story to see what is going on. And despite its flaws, M1K was at least fun. I can barley stomach what people say about Tekken 8. I been holding back this feeling for a long time, but Tekken story is just GARBAGE. And only stinks harder thanks to the toxic fandom that bullies and harasses people who can't take hot-takes. I too hated 3.0, but IMO all of the rebuild films I've seen aren't as good as the original series, and in some cases butcher motives of some characters. The only area the films improved on is the art and animation, but that's just me. There's pretty good videos by youtuber "DouchebagChocolat" that goes into more detail on why I feel that way if your interested. I have to disagree, Tekken 8 really fixed the Mishma feud and Jin IMO, though I guess that does require you to remember that A. that Jin suffers from depression and hates himself and B. the Kazama side plot of redeeming Kazuya instead of killing him and how that connects to Angel from Tekken 2 and hinted at in 4.
