Road-size zebra stripes, but no road-style zig-zags and no signs. So why be surprised when riders don't recognise them as zebra crossings? Use smaller stripes so that more of them fit across the path, and paint signs on the surface on the approach, then look again at compliance.
@ianholloway3778 Жыл бұрын
I don't think the half size zig-zags are in the current Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016. They were in the previous regs for crossings. I agree that better approach markings are needed as there aren't enough zebra stripes to register the 'must give way to pedestrians' response. In the old TSRGD they did change the meaning of the standard (half-size double give way markings) to include giving way to pedestrians, so if it still means that they could use the double dashed line and a painted give way triangle. Low level Belisha beacons would help but are expensive, but black and white bollards with a reflective orange disc would help alert cyclists. Blue signs with white text saying 'Give way to pedestrians' would be legal.
@TheTraveller20081 Жыл бұрын
@Ian Holloway agreed, the signs&lines code needs to provide for new ways of using the roads, it's always behind the curve. It's not just a UK problem, the same exists I know in NZ. Innovation is often required but the machinery of permitting and legalising it is always too slow. Until then it's the toss-up between designing something effective - and cost-effective - vs something heavy-handed but conforming to the inadequate rules.
@ianholloway3778 Жыл бұрын
I've checked the regs and it's legal to use the half-size double dashed give way lines and white give way triangle which on cycle tracks mean 'give to any person including pedestrians'. The zebra stripes can be as narrow as 400mm.

Cyclists must have a way of being identified, as are motor vehicles. Insurance too and a contribution towards road fund. Unfortunately, it does appear a majority of cyclists that have no regard to pedestrian safety and have an arrogance that their mode of transport elevates them to a higher plane.

As a cyclist and a pedestrian, I find this site utterly ridiculous! First time there, I was nearly hit by a cyclist because I was unaware that I was even in a cycle lane. On a bike, I would not want to have to stop at virtually every bus stop! A safer thing for cyclist, and pedestrians, would be to widen the road- Whitechapel pavement is a very broad one but I think they have market stalls on some days...

Except the bike path does not have a zebra crossing, it’s just some stripes painted on the road, technically they don’t actually mean anything. As a cyclist (12k miles pa) it’s disappointing to see cyclists not paying attention to the volumes of pedestrians though and irrespective of the loony traffic management system. I think this is more indicative of the ‘London mentality’ where everyone thinks they are so important others safety is secondary.

The department of transport laughs at disabled people. I should ask them for the recording when they laughed at me for reporting heavy bicycles left in the middle of pavement. He actually laughed and hanged the phone up. That was a sign for me that day to give up the fight. Unfortunately it’s the disabled and less able bodied people that will suffer. Such a sad situation. There's no bus there most of the time, why are they making these crossings pedestrian priority? All that achieves is the cyclists have to slow down and waste energy for a pedestrian to get 1m closer to the road only to stop and wait there. Fair enough if there is a bus at the stop, have a traffic light or something, but for all other times it make much more sense for it to be cycling priority. That would be much more efficient and safe.

@@TheTraveller20081 A favour? Most cyclists are a bane of everyone else's existance. Pedestirans, cars, hell even helicopters probably find them annoying. A vast majority think that because they're on a bike (saving the environment, easing congestion, whatever excuse they justify it with) they are automatically correct in everything, and never have to observe the same rules as they should have priority.

i think the problem is how fast the superhighways are, i regularly use cs2 (shown here) and while i do try to stop where i can, it would probably cause a cycle crash if someone stopped especially with the number of cyclists there are at rush hour. the cycle lanes are simultaneously slow and fast (due to all the traffic lights on route) but a suitable solution to this would probably installing mini traffic lights that pedestrians can push similar to a puffin, this would reduce a lot of the risk for blind and less able pedestrians but also make cyclists more inclined to stop. again, as someone who cycles and walks this route regularly, it has a lot of benefits but this is probably the major drawback
@ibassnote Жыл бұрын
This is clearly never going to work. It’s not a popular point to make but it is also hazardous for cyclists. Probably the answer is actually a tunnel that goes underneath major crossings so there is no meeting of bikes and pedestrians. I understand the anger at cyclists but this is as much an engineering flaw as anything else.
@ThankYouAndHello Жыл бұрын
Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing (see Rule H2).
@kurtphilly Жыл бұрын
This is a design flaw. Just like the width of a road that dictates the rate of speed it is comfortable to drive. Requiring bikes and pedestrians to interact in a tight space is just dangerous. The cyclists need a separate lane that minimizes any conflict with the bus route and those entering and exiting the bus.

Cyclist are not reliable therefore such solutions that rely on taking care for each others do not work Cyclist have to wait for anyone here and if they do not stop the police takes 40€ and if the one caught has a driver licence he gets fined with points too. Otherwise cyclist do not learn and even those 40€ are far too less. Marked or not would not care cause these zebra crossings needs sign and cyclist simply have to stop for each and every pedestrian. The weaker a participant in traffic is the higher the protection he deserves and others have to take care for - but cyclist simply ignore it, their ego pushes them ahead. And in case of a crash they do not get caught enough therefore do not have to pay for the damages they had caused. Terrible solution which would not be allowed here.
@chrissyj.6783 Жыл бұрын
Maybe it's because of those pedestrians who can't tell the difference between the footpath and the cycle lane, that makes some cyclists think 'sod em, I'm not stopping'. However the whole concept of these zebra crossings on a cycle lane is flawed. There's no signs or advance markings for them, as you'd find on a full-size crossing. I certainly wouldn't be sure that was actually a crossing point if I hadn't seen it before.
