I love London but it's a stressy city. It's loud, busy with cars, there's a constant droning noise wearing you down, everyone is angry. Go to Amsterdam and there's some massive roads with cars but physically separated huge bike lanes and then lots if little roads where people walk and cycle very happily, safely and quietly. And most people are in a good mood (and they can't all be stoned all the time right)

Indeed. This video definitely takes on renewed meaning and significance, in the wake of climate activism in particular, encouraging people to use other transport, now more people are cycling. I think there should be a bigger incentive to cycling, not just in London but the rest of the country too. Good cycling infrastructure outside London is patchy outside of cities, most of it’s overgrown or muddy canal towpaths, and the purpose built cycle paths are maybe a mile or two long that stop immediately. I reckon there’s a big opportunity to be had to create a national cycling infrastructure. For instance using up former railway lines axed by Beeching in the 60s, you don’t even have to tear up the tracks, just bury them under a good path and you’re golden.

Something I never see mentioned anywhere is the fact that the reason why the Netherlands and other countries started incentivizing the use of the bicycle was because of the Petrol crisis, those countries and families went bankrupt, and so the bicycle was what was left. It wasn't until much later, that they realized all of the benefits that they started talking about it as something to be proud of. That (the economic crisis of the late 70's early 80's) is a key part in this development, because the dutch were saying and thought the same things that everybody says and thinks about the automobile and bike back then, it's just that they had no choice. PS: some people apparently think that saying "nobody mentions this" is the same as saying "this is the only thing that mattered", I welcome all comments about other contributing factors, just don't assume I don't think they are important.

@AudieHolland 3 жыл бұрын
Nah, during the 1980s, traffic deaths, mainly due to car on car or car on pedestrians were at an all time high. It was only during the 1990s that true, proper bicyclist infrastructure started to appear everywhere. In the 1980s, it was more like: look at the dotted line and the cyclist symbol painted on! Do you feel lucky? Well, do you, punk?

@@larrote6467 There were more factors playing why the Dutch had no choice. In the 1960s, Amsterdam hired an American city planner to redo the entire city centre. Bulldoze all those monumental merchants' houses, fill in those canals and put some serious 6-lane highway right in the centre. Then they realized there wasn't enough space, most of the citizens hated it and their protests grew louder and louder Bikes were used decades before because most people couldn't afford a car or moped. Don't you know we keep nagging the Germans for taking our bikes when they started retreating from Holland in 1944?

I visited London in 2019, and loved bicycling around on those rental bikes! We were staying in Lambeth, and I cycled all around there to Waterloo and Southwark, and never had a problem. Maybe that area just didn't have a lot of traffic, or I'm just accustomed to cycling in Southern California... (Apologies in advance if I bungled those area names, going off maps right now)

@3:35 - To answer the video's question 'Why did Amsterdam succeed in betting on cycling in the 70's, while London didn't?' I think it's simply because Holland was slightly more densely populated than England, and Amsterdam's historical charm was slightly more damaged by the sight of cars than London was. We (Dutch) were also very attached to our cars and also saw it as a status symbol. In the 60's we even had American city planners flown in to teach us how to shape our streets (I s*** you not). The proposal to start building cycling tracks instead of a monster highway straight through the city was very hotly contested for months in the Amsterdam city council, but eventually passed on ONE VOTE through a conservative rep flipping at the very end. It could honestly have happened because one single child too many had died in traffic. After the bill was passed it obviously became an immediate success upon which the rest of the country followed.

There is a major imbalance because an irresponsible driver puts a cyclists life at risk but the worst a cyclist can do to a driver is to slightly inconvenience their journey. Add in the mentality of some drivers that they have the right to kill anyone who slightly inconveniences them and you have a lethal mix. Dutch roads avoid these conflicts by road design that separates the traffic from the cyclists.
