Is it ok to tell patients to make their own way to hospital?
That's what's happening in the West Midlands - even people who have had a stroke or a heart attack.
Our health service is under immense pressure, so do you think it's a good solution?

If you are a lower category you will be given a wait time that can be multiple hours.Therefore if you can yourself to hospital somehow you will at least be in accident and emergency sooner.I do agree that this is not ideal however have known ambulance waits that have exceeded 12 hours.

They already do tell you to make your own way in to hospital if you can because they're that slammed. Unfortunately it's not safe for everyone to do so. Someone's grandma with a broken femur can no more get themselves to hospital safely than a child having a severe asthma attack can. Taxis and buses don't have oxygen.
@jujutrini8412

Exactly. They have pain relief also! Some patients are in so much pain they can’t even move without it (and that’s on a stretcher!)

@@jujutrini8412 Indeed. The current culture of shaming people who might require nhs services when they're ill is diabolical. Good job I let the paramedics talk me into going as I took a turn for the worse in the back of the ambulance, which meant they had to stop and give me more emergency meds en route. But yes I should have just got a taxi. I'm sure the taxi driver would have had everything I needed right there in his glovebox..... 🫣

A taxi driver wouldn't want someone throwing up in a car or screaming in pain.....plus, taxi drivers aren't medically trained. So that is a stupid idea to say use a taxi. Plus, not everyone has money on them when they are severally poorly so a taxi driver would refuse you potentially

@hello8987 I agree with you. But some do though. And most taxi drivers don't want to take someone who's pucking like the exorcist in their cars or they charge you lots of money for soiling their car. I understand we are limited on ambulances and NHS staff at the moment. So we have to be careful about how we prioritise ambulances. But not everyone can use taxis or buses, either. Not everyone has their car, as well. Some people live alone and don't drive.

I saw my GP as I was breathless my oxygen levels were only 63% the Dr rang the hospital that I was on my way . I had double pneumonia & blood clot on the lung & was asked to drive myself to A& E luckily my two dear friends got me to the hospital quickly I don’t know what would of happened to me otherwise .
@EloiseB2025
@EloiseB2025 Ай бұрын
I'm so sorry that happened to you and glad your friends could help! Those Sats are dangerously low. You would have been given oxygen within minutes by an ambulance crew (something taxi drivers don't keep on them for the sanctimonious! 🙄). I know someone who was told to make their own way to A&E. The minute they walked through the doors they collapsed and were took straight to ICU. I hope you put a complaint in and that you're much better now.

We have to do it all ourselves these days. Last year my husband had a bad back problem on a Sunday night spasms and fell on the floor. Called an ambulance was told there wasn't any and to call 111. so had to get him on the bed myself and wait the night for him to see someone in the morning. This year his appendix bust and I had to get him to hospital myself and wait there all night till they had someone to remove it and he got a bad infection after. It feels like as had as I'm sure the hospital tries there not enough staff or ambulances to treat people in a timely and safe way these days.
@EloiseB2025
@EloiseB2025 Ай бұрын
I'm sorry your husband went through this and I hope he's fully recovered now. Unfortunately ambulances often get tied up waiting to hand over patients to hospitals which means they can't be on other shouts as they aren't allowed to leave their patients until they are safely handed over. This has been happening for years there were photos of ambulances lined up the other year and not one media outlet thought to pick it up then.

@@EloiseB2025 Thanks he's getting better now. I agree ambulances are so busy and there isn't people at the hospital to hand the unwell to as there just not enough staff. But it's horrible when you need an ambulance and there isn't one. Even if you do get to hospital these day it don't feel safe, no beds, no porters to take you for Xray etc... It just need fixing really for everyone's wellbeing.

@EloiseB2025
@EloiseB2025 Ай бұрын
Some taxis will. I think it depends what the problem is. But frankly its silly for this sort of opinion to become mainstream. The only person who has the medical qualifications to assess if you're fit to get to ED is the 999 handler. Also if you're a bit busy having a heart attack probably best you don't wait the 20 minutes for a taxi. The ambulance has the equipment you'd need. The local taxi firm does. This attitude (not from you) of trying to shame patients for needing to use an ambulance is ridiculous. Paramedics won't take you into ED unless they are certain you need it.

@@ruthhadfield9726 absolutely! But you need to remember people who think this is a good idea probably have BUPA plans and a car or two on the drive to get them to the ED. Guessing they've probably not tried to take themselves to the ED on the bus with a burst appendix under their own steam? 🤷‍♀️

Most people dont rock up to A&E because they just cant see their Doctor. My Back went and I kept going to work but it started going down my legs over 3 weeks. In the end I was in agony and could not walk the pain was constant. I rang the Doctors they gave me a physio appointment in 3 weeks i never even spoke to a GP. I was in agongy even on crutches going to the taxi screamin in agony. It took all night but A&E were wonderful it was Severe Sciatica, if The GP had spoken to me they could of given me the treatment which was strong pain killers I would then not of been unanle to walkfor 3 weeks after this and unable to walk. 2 days after starting to walk I went back to work and I am on my feet all day. When I eventually saw the physio he lifted one of my legs and let it flop down i never had got another appointment and helped myself to walk with my crutches then gradually a few steps without. Medical treatment is disgraceful. And its not the first time.

In an ideal world, Angela should be able to call an ambulance, but under current circumstances Angela’s husband should have taken her to the hospital so the ambulance could go to someone without a husband and a car to take them. Angela would also be the first person to complain about any tax increases required to fund an ambulance service that had capacity to deal with people in her sort of situation.

@@jamesg8175 but you know that's not true right? We get rid of all the Immigrants we get rid of all the Immigrants in the NHS too. So that means the Indian orthopedic surgeon is no longer there to do patients ops. The Italian trauma doc is no longer available in resus. The Immigrant GPs and dentist all have to go home too. So that's less people to treat patients and longer waiting lists.

@kristinamasters1663 Ай бұрын
The thing is extremely bad or even mild indigestion could be a heart attack. I woke up with a searing pain in my heart pre covid I saw a GP but said I had to go to hospital for an exam they told me there was nothing wrong with me. By the time I got home bus and walking t felt awful. I also had pain down my arm and a bad stomach classec signs in a woman. I even went to work the ne t day and carried on doing so. So this has been going on a long time.
@EloiseB2025
@EloiseB2025 Ай бұрын
@kristinamasters1663 Indeed. But it's a moot point. They're just throwing random unverified stories in there to make you think all patients are willingly choosing to spend 12 hours down their ED. The triage nurse would know very quickly if a patient was having a heart attack or just a bout of indigestion and they'd be sorted accordingly. This isn't sensible rhetoric from this channel. Attitudes like this is why people who genuinely need medical help hesitate calling for it.
