This is so sad to hear, I'm waiting to get my second test I've had 1 but the time period is not sufficient yet to be fully sure. I'm dreading having to tell my family if it's positive I have 2 children and a girlfriend which I'm scared of losing. Wish me luck xxx

The best way to avoid ignorance and stigma is to date someone who is the same as you undetectable, this then negates the time spent giving someone your fabulousness to someone who doesnt deserve it

Apparently 1 in 7 people who are HIV positive don’t know their status which is quite a lot. No one should be having unprotected sex until both partners are 100% sure of each other’s status. Simple as that. An ounce of PREVENTION is worth a POUND of cure.

As a young female who grew up in trendy East Village NYC in the 80’s ‘90s I saw so many talented young gay men who were my friends, artists designers musicians stylists designers die in a short time a cruel hideous painful death….it’s traumatized me so much I would be wary to seriously date an hiv+ person even though I KNOW intellectually that if they are taking their medication and are undetectable that they CANNOT transmit the disease….Like any other difficulties that can come with a relationship I guess it just boils down to how much you love the person…

Most countries' laws, specify that someone hiv positive is not obligated to disclose it's status if that person is on treatment and undetectable. On the other hand, someone knowing that it's hiv positive, and having sexual intercourse without being on treatment, and using barriers methods, and not disclosing it beforehand to his sexual partner may afford jail time for health crime.

If a person has an undetectable viral load they cannot pass the virus on. It is vastly safer to have sex with an HIV positive person on ART with an undetectable viral load than it is to have sex with a person who does not know their HIV status. Some folks are still indeed in denial. That said, for the sake of any stable or healthy relationship you should tell your partner what's going on. But on the moral level of accidentally causing someone to become infected, no not if a person is undetectable.

I told my partner and I invited him to my ID doc with me, but that isn't enough for him bc I'm not on therapy (cause of high cd4 and low VL, essentially I don't need it for the time being...be I can feel things changed on his side,we're not still a couple and I'm so desperate to feel him like before I told him my status...I'm alone and sad,no1 who can talk about this..it's terrible

Update: since last month we're officially a couple,we managed to crush his stigma and paranoia of hiv to the point where it doesn't affect our relationship anymore,it has become normal. He said "never I thought it would be so easy to dismantle all my prejudices and ignorance". When we met after the news he kissed and hugged me, that's why I value him so much even when we fight for other things..I opened the door of my private life in this issue and he didn't step back.

Although it's at certain point a right medical decision not to start at that point ARV's, the most recent guidelines tell that even with very low viral load and high cd4, the reasons and benefits of starting to take the ARV's are higher than not taking them. The most important one is that it they would act as a kind of Virus Lock-down, that would make it impossible to be transmitted to your partner. Not taking them it's just a matter of time in which at some point your viral load would start to rise and your cd4 would start slowly to fall. Regular medical check ups with Viral Load/CD4 count are schedualed each 3-6 months, but, even with monthly labs and check ups, the risk of passing it without meds it's quite considerable, than the one of being on ARV's. At this point it's the best you could do to protect your partner. Cheers, and take care :)

On the dating apps the stigma is around the effects of HIV and how long the infected person has to live .. but isn’t it more keen to look at showing the HIV negative person that they won’t contract the virus? Not that they would be okay if they did.

Undetectable is not necessarily a permanent status. You can still experience viral rebound and become infectious again. This can happen even if you never stop taking the medication, even if you have managed to be undetectable for years. So please disclose. Just because we have great treatment now doesn’t mean it poses no health risks.
