If they do understand what depression is, they also feel offended. They take it personally. They'll tell you how ungrateful you are despite all they have provided you with, even if that has no relation to your depression. So uhh.. if you're (unfortunately) a typical Asian family's kid, just bottle your depression up. There's not much else that can be done. Bottle it up, and just hope you can see a therapist once you have a job and earn enough money. Your family won't care. P.S. : Removed the "Daughter's get leniency". I used to think they had it better, but after doing some more reading on the net, and seeing some replies here, I realize that was untrue. Being treated as 'Daddy's little girl' is probably just a western stereotype. Here in Asia, that simply isn't the case. Everyone is given the same terrible parenting.

As an asian kid with actually halfway decent parents, yes, *_real parents._* We simply do not get depressed, because our parents are already way better than their parents. We are glad we do not have to deal with most of the bullshit that comes with being asian. My parents allowed me to teach myself. I learned to be free. I learned to have my own rights. I learned to stand my ground. I learned to set boundaries. And I learned to talk things out with my parents. I learned that it was right to hit them back. I learned that it was right to tell them what crossed the line. I learned that I had the right to live for myself. I stopped bottling my emotions up. I talked about it, I made them understand. I got mad. I got sad. It was not their right to tell me what I should feel. And so, after all that, I finally have a good relationship with my parents that we can collectively grow. Dragged them back to reality before they could get too far. And hell yes I am glad I argue with my parents. After all, it's through all those arguments we're finally here where we are now. I'm glad my parents were atleast good enough to realize some of their mistakes, and with my growth I was able to correct the rest. I did not end up in a loop of negative emotions, where each time I backed off my parents would grow more and more used to it, thinking it was right. After that first time, everything simply became better. Although they did try to stuff some of their garbage teachings into me, they gave me enough freedom to learn, to understand that they were wrong. I had the luxury of knowing better, and being able to filter out what was right and what was wrong. Despite my parents not being too good at parenting, I was able to correct myself because of the stories everyone passed along. Because of the explanations people created. Because of *_the internet._* And so, in my case, I argue that the internet is a good thing. I am glad I did not end up like one of those retards on twitter/reddit, nor one of those asians that grew up with extremely abusive parents. Even still, I wonder, fear what would have happened had my parents been worse. Who would I have become? Certainly, it was the internet that gave me the knowledge and the right to live for myself.

Same. I’m distant with my dad all because I’ve been scared of him all my life. And I’ve dealt with mental illness alone and in secret. Me and my dad are both adults now, and find I that we can finally have common ground. But I can sense there are things: his attitude, beliefs, that he can’t change. The fear of a clash on an already fragile relationship with my fragile mind keeps me distant. But my dad is old. Your parents too or will be. It’s a hard ask, but let’s also forgive our parents where they falter. And honor them. Even if they don’t see or admit their faults. And we children are the ones who need to be stronger through our pain for this. It’ll be one of the hardest but the most meaningful things we’ll do in our lives and theirs.
@blessingsbest68382 жыл бұрын
Not trying to minimise the pain but I do think she said that cos Africans go through alot and have developed this mental resilience. Unbelievable shit if you ask me, for this reason they think depression is a choice. Sometimes our parents don’t know better, we should try and see it from their perception. Their own parents provided them with basic needs, they accepted and made the most of it in a tough likely deprived country! To travel abroad and make something out of themselves, they believe children should be grateful. It’s depends, life affects us differently and interpretation of it. Reminding ourselves of the gratitude is important. I think there should be a study on this, why the recent surge in suicide! Depression? (Talking for children who had decent backgrounds/upbringing access to basic things). Is it lack of sleep? Lack of mental resilience? Is it in our food, water etc. it’s needs to be addressed. I am German, 30 now and 10 years ago, I had severe depression. One day, I cut both forearms at work. After I got home, my father yelled at me and asked, if I was bored and couldn't just live a life like everyone else. I put then a shirt on to cover my forearms. About 10 minutes later, my father was like "It's okay, you don't have to cover it." What a hypocrisy! Depression is a feeling we just don't choose. You don't have to be ashamed, if you get depressed. The real problem is the bottomless ignorance of this distorted, so-called "civilized" society!

As an asian, this is damn accurate. In my family there is no time for being depressed, being depressed could make us look weak and give off a negative aura. Usually when one of us feels down like what happened to me, the others would just tease me and say that just forget about it and face it like a man because there are no time for such things. It actually worked and helped me to keep on moving forward despite several hardships in life. Whenever I am challenged, I just calm down and look down on my problems while thinking of a way to deal with it while I just seal away my negative thoughts and feelings.

I actually worry that you may instead bottle up your feelings, which the bottle one day will eventually break because you never 'pour' it. This was actually what my psychiatrist told me on my first visit. I've been struggling with expressing my emotion for decades because I also did what you do. Please know that no matter what your family says, it is okay to have a feeling and being sad. Find a healthy coping mechanism instead of sealing away the negative thoughts and feelings. Talk to people you can trust, those who can be an ear when you need it without being judgemental. I hope you're doing well
@lisafranku72033 жыл бұрын
Shout out to @茶々 👆👆👆👆 It's okay to have negative feelings. It's part of what being human is. It's okay to cry, to be angry, no matter what the reason is. I know it's hard to ignore what usually our parents or relatives told us because it has such a big impact on our hearts, but always prioritize your emotional and mental health. People say mean things to hurt, control and sometimes they'll even spill their trauma on others, and we can't let their comments hit us. Love yourself and treat yourself as better as you can, because no one will do it in the way you really need it. Nobody knows our needs, what we've been through, to decide/comment on this things. Except a good therapist :) Run away from people who treat your needs as nothing. Start this year recognizing that you deserve to be in peace within yourself, making your heart and mind good places that you deserve to be in.
@rayres10743 жыл бұрын
Sorry mate but being teased and told to forget and _actually being able to do it_ is not really... depression. Depression isn't being down. It's a literal chemical unbalance in the brain. Sealing away negatives thoughts and feelings is not healthy either... you're not getting them away from your attention, you're bottling them, and that shit can consume you from within. Glad you're doing ok but... be careful.

This is 100% accurate. It’s honestly sad that parents don’t take mental health seriously and see it as a joke or using it as an excuse to called their kids “lazy”, but in truth, their kids are suffering mentally and emotionally and being overwhelmed with the stress and expectations from their parents/school. Pls take care of yourself and if you ever felt lost or in ever in need of talking to someone, it’s okay and you shouldn’t be afraid of finding help or talk to anyone, cause you’re not alone. @aaa51262 жыл бұрын
@Jethro Webber but its not the case for everybody, those that had enough mantal stability were forced to strenghten up and push through because they were constantly in danger or distrrss, that's mostly thanks to adrenaline. There were still people that commited suicide, and a lot of those that survived still have problems dealing with emotions or empathy, I see it a lot in older generations, both of my grandparents ended up as addicts because they couldn't deal with their emotions in healthy way and pushed it aside. Today is different, we have other things to worry about and other things cause people distress, besides many cases of mental illness are hormonal or a genetical, its just important to get help as fast as possible, in many cases its people with abusive or neglective houses that end up in suicidal states I've gone through depression and anxiety and its professional help, medication and family support that helped me get better We need to stop with the 'people in old times were better, you're just looking for problems' For fuck sake, what's the point, every generations spits on the younger one and its going nowhere

You're really lucky fam. I'm an Indian with Generalised anxiety... My mom understands but my dad doesn't believe in mental health problems. He thinks it's a thing of this generation, while simultaneously showing symptoms of anxiety himself. -_-

My sister told my mother she was depressed, I remember she used to cry every night and my mom reply was "there is nothing like depression, depression doesn't exist, your feeling sad becuase you are far from god" (I'm from a Muslim asian family don't mind) and a couple years after she has recovered we still laugh at this shit lmfao

This is actually kind of sad, some parents just doesn't believe sadness is real, and the life they provide for us will always be a utopia. But it's not.
@kutaraa2 жыл бұрын
To them, sadness is like a ghost, even if someone talking about saw a ghost, they will not believe... and if one day they saw a ghost themselves, they will still trying to explain it in a non supernature way.

The only reason for a person to denial ghost/depression so badly, it's because deep inside, they are afraid of the unknown, they don't want it to exist, don't want to deal with this horrible thing, they protect themselves with denial, create a way to live without worry.

i know but the purpose of this video wasn't to generalize the experience of children of white parents he was more so criticizing a more general culture in many asian countries and communities surrounding mental health and depression. he wasn't trying to invalidate children of white parents who had a tough time with getting help for depression (I'm still very sorry to hear about your situation I hope it gets better my heart goes out to you)

Just to speculate, from all parents that deny their childs mental health as something to consider, it may be that they have quite bad mental health themselves, and their only way of dealing with it was avoidance strategies such as various addictions and generally choosing to be ignorant of themselves. So if a child would try to talk to their parents about it, the parents would bat the idea away as it may come as an unintended threat to think about their own mental health. This is considering the fact there was much less support for it in their day and stigma so the norm was avoidance strategies etc. On the Asian subject my chinese friends back in the day said most people in Hong Kong chained smoked packs of 20+ cigarettes a day.

It's more like earlier generations like their parents and these kids grandparents or great grandparents experienced REAL hardships, including wars, and yet not only they survived but they became one of the best and toughest generations in history. Rush Limbaugh before said every generation must have a battle to fight and win. He claimed today's younger generation because of lack of real crisis like Great Depression or war has to manufacture a crisis and that manufactured crisis is mental health 24/7 hysteria. I just want to say whatever crisis 🇺🇸 come up with, the rest of the world would follow. In the Philippines, you hear young people nowadays using mental health as a badge, a trophy to carry around. But their parents and older people don't take them seriously because they think it's crap. You also hear them imitating cancel culture and other woke crap. Makes you wonder what kind of soldiers these young weaklings would make.
@SofieRPhoto2 жыл бұрын
@@sweetluvgurl no, I'm not saying that it makes it ok, definitely not, but recognising it as a possible cause of the problem may absolve from some of the hurt it clearly causes. The easy option is to blame but it only puts a grudge on our back to carry until we choose the harder path which is separate from our feelings of hurt we attached to the situation, to try and understand their point of view. I've been through a nearly double decade long roundabout of blame and dwelling over problems, but to avoid all that unnecessary stress I created boundaries and did everything I could to move past the misunderstandings. Your mental health should always come first, others are their responsibilities unfortunately, even if it meant you got less support growing up it's now up to you to move past it. You'll only be prouder of yourself for trying.
@SofieRPhoto2 жыл бұрын
@@maretvilla1531 I get what you're saying, it makes sense that people develop strength through experience of overcoming hardship. You bring up some interesting points, I agree that young people discredit themselves of anything authentic if they are copying things they have seen in the media, but they are still trying to communicate something in the best way they know how, seeing real life examples working and then trying to imitate it. What interests me here is the repulsed behaviour of the parent towards the child who is acting inauthentic. It's a nice philosophy to have to say we all have a life's challenge to overcome. I do however think the challenges keep coming, just in different forms, I think that learning to enjoy the challenge is the best way of looking at it, probably best done when looking back and seeing what it taught you, but I understand also that pain can take its toll.

This video might apply to the USA, but idk, i haven't been there. I'm from Eastern Europe, Romania and i've been depressed for a long time. I tried to tell my parents and it didn't go well. My mom said "What, are you telling me that you're crazy?! Is that it?!", while my dad just thought i was a rebelious teenager and he told me that he's seriously considering taking me to an exorcist. Mind you, i wasn't doing anything rebelious other than occasionally contradicting my dad when he was picking arguments with me or even beating me up. I went to school, didn't skip class, had the best grades in my class, i came home on time, i didn't party, didn't drink, didn't smoke, didn't do drugs, actually i never even went out because i wasn't allowed to, i did my chores in the house (my parents didn't do any), i watched my younger siblings sometimes. All i did was stay in my room all day drawing or on my computer, trying to avoid any contact with my family because they always somehow found reasons to argue when there were none. But they thought i was a problem child, that i was literally evil and was the cause of all the troubles in their lives. I was and still am, at 24 years old, not living with any of them anymore, the scapegoat.
