They are designed to have a wall behind the tempest so you dont have the back and forth . Make yourself a shelf with a hole cut in it to allow the drain valve to pass through it to give it additional support

Sorry about the fish Nick, however it could have been a whole lot worse with the tempest situation. They aren't supported very well at all, I'd have expected the unit itself to be supported rather than the joining pipework. I would however recommend you consider doing the relevant checks to pond & fish. Test the water parameters, scrape a few fish. I know you said you treat religiously with FMG but unless you know what you are treating for if anything, and in what quantity, its more or less pointless. Just my advice to you buddy. Take care😊

Sorry for your loss mate. I am not surprised the fish reacts different to amonia spikes. Every time you get amonia in the water there will be permanent damage to the gills. That fish has proboably experienced more of them and is big, hence needs more oxygen.

Thanks for the advice I always keep an eye on amonia. But the frustrating thing is that the fish has been in the pond for 9 years and the pond wasn't filtered for 4 hot days in summer whilst I fit new filters with no losses. Thanks once again mate. 👍👍

My pond has been running about 12 years now and all I ever do is treat it for cloverleaf blanketweed killer once a year in spring and keeps it gin clear for the year. I've never had to treat the pond with any other chemicals and never lost a fish to date. Thing is with things like FMG is that it knocks back your filtration. I stay clear of putting any chemicals in my pond (except cloverleaf) and my pond has been fine the whole time. Think people are too quick to dump different chemicals in their pond and excessively scrape their fish. Think they're doing more harm then good. I just clean my pumps and filters every few weeks, have an air stone running and do 10% water changes every couple/few weeks and the pond is always gin clear with no problems. Problem with the koi hobby in my opinion is everyone just follows the herd and buys into all these fancy gimmicks and over priced accessories. Think the key to a healthy pond is to keep it simple and let nature do its thing. That's just my opinion anyway and its always worked for me.

I totally agree with this. I am the same only treatment I have used is cloverfield for blanket weed other than that they get water change around 10-15% every couple of weeks and filters cleaned out every week maybe more in summer and never had a issue with fish or water clarity in over 6 years. I believe that people have switched to a much more sterile environment in their ponds by using chemicals and additives that the parasites have nothing in the pond to cling to but the fish or that the fish have a low immune system as the chemicals usually get rid of them but when do come into contact they can’t naturally defend against. Just my two pennies worth.
@ces69

A big problem is that many buy new fish which they add to their pond without out any sort of prior quarantine! We all know dealers SHOULD fully quarantine and treat for issues and not put on sale till fish are 100% clear, unfortunately not all do, and we introduce all sorts of problems to our pond! Having learnt the hard way, no new fish now enter my pond without being thoroughly quarantined and treated for any issues first!
