The second man singing, Austin Brown, is Home Free's high tenor, so when he's singing it, he's in a super comfortable place singing, which I think reay adds to that like smooth feeling. If we look at the first who sang, Adam Chance, he's a bass-baritone, and while he can sing up there pretty well, he's going to have much more tension, also adding to the feeling of the "wall" you spoke up. Thought I'd add my thoughts on this.

This was Don McLean's song and he invited Home Free to help him re-record it for the song, American Pie's 50 anniversary. Don is now 74 years old and still sounds great. The song still brings a tear to my eyes, especially when the song slows down near the end and the the verse sings about that the music doesn't play there anymore. It was a symbolic gesture to the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, J. P. Richardson. The song is a fitting tribute to these 3 young performers who were taken from us in a plane crash at just the beginning of the peaks of their careers. I love Home Free as a group and it is full of very talented performers. The gentleman in the V-neck shirt is Adam Rupp, one of the founders of the group and is the beat boxer extraordinaire. The lead singer that followed Don McLean is Austin Brown, an excellent tenor with a very warm voice and gives their music a bit of a country twang. The next singer, also a tenor, is Rob Lundquist. Rob is the second tenor in the group and along with having a very nice tenor voice is one of the world's great whistlers. The next member of Home Free to sing lead is Adam Chance, who goes by the name Chance just to avoid confusion with Adam Rupp. Chance has a wonderful voice and has great range. He can sing from middle tenor to upper bass and is the newest member of the vocal group. He took the place of Adam Rupp's brother. Chris, and has been a great addition to the group. Last, but definitely not least is Tim Foust, who has an approximate 5 or 6 octave range, from tenor to sub-harmonic. I hope that this help explain who is whom and does what in the group Home Free. They just released another song, a cover of Percy Sledge's "When A Man Loves A Woman" which features Austin as the lead. You may want to react to that one too.

Don McLean originated the song 12 years after the event that he's singing about. They released the song (this version) on the anniversary of the date the plane crashed with three (3) famous musicians on board, including Buddy Holly. Austin Brown was the guy you stopped to discuss during the verse "moss grows fat on a rolling stone". He's the primary tenor in the group and does an unreal version of Unchained Melody solo. It would give you a far better idea of his overall range and ability. The first verse was by Chance, the group baritone harmony. He has a rich voice, and runs the base from time to time to let Tim Foust take a higher range. He was the guy in the leather jacket. Adam did all of the "instruments". He's the group "band". Spectacular beat boxer. Rob was the bearded guy. He's like the middle ground glue for the group. He does tenor as well, but has a totally different voice than Austin. He has a crazy smooth tone. You listen to his better work in "Blue Ain't Your Color". Tim is a base profundo. He has a five octave range. He runs the crazy base lines in their songs. They like to let him show off a lot. Look at their cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" to see him hit a crazy low note.

I am in no way putting Austin down, Austin is amazing. 4th Verse - Rob Lundquist - Tenor (with some soul) 5th Verse - Tim Foust - THE BASS - Man can sing low and has a very wide vocal range. 6th Verse - Back to the man himself Don McLean And let's not forget, the entire song instrumentals done by the Best Beat Boxer out there, Adam Rupp. We often forget that there are no instruments in Home Free songs, because Adam does such an amazing job filling it all in.

I love this song. On the subject of the lyrics to "American Pie," the only concrete explanation Don McLean has ever given is that it means he'll never have to work again. He has admitted that the "father, son, and the Holy Ghost" line refers to Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens. An interesting side-note regarding Don McLean is that, according to songwriter Lori Lieberman, he is the unnamed singer in "Killing Me Softly With His Song" (a song Lieberman wrote that was later a hit for both Roberta Flack and The Fugees). The song was inspired when Lieberman saw him perform at a club and was struck by his sad breakup song "Empty Chairs". For decades, McLean was totally unaware he was the inspiration for this song. When he found out, he said, "I'm absolutely amazed. I've heard both Lori's and Roberta's version and I must say I'm very humbled about the whole thing. You can't help but feel that way about a song written and performed as well as that one is."

Seeing Don perform his original work with Home Free was awesome - 75 years young and going strong. Tim has a 5 Octave range so while, officially, the base of the group he can work in almost any pitch and kill it while lead singing. Chance slips in, literally without missing a beat, to cover the base tone when Tim leads. Between him as base/baritone and Tim as base the lower registers are never neglected. And, of course, Adam Rupp beat boxes to perfection subbing in for a full rhythm section. Austin and Rob as high tenor and tenor, respectively, balance the high registers perfectly. This video highlights them all to perfection as a group.

Home Free guys (in order of their vocals in this video), Adam Chance, baritone/bass; Austin Brown, high tenor; Rob Lindquist, tenor; and Tim Foust, basso profundo. And we can't forget about Austin Rupp layin' down the PERFECT beat box backgrounds! The thing I most enjoy about this version of American Pie is how each of them brings a little of themselves to the performance, but not so much as to overpower the song and Don McLean himself. Home Free honors the original intent of the song while still bringing their style home. Huge shout out to Darren Rust for his INCREDIBLE recording and mix engineering. Not sure who is credited with this particular arrangement, but it was SO incredibly "full" with the guys all doing a wonderful job of "filling our ears" with the goodness surrounding the original lyrics. While this song may not "showcase" their range and talents, I feel it shows how well they can use their talents to bring this song to a whole new generation of listeners. Well done! Thanks for your review DJ... and yeah, "that line" kinda guts us all.

That would be Austin singing that "roll over" as opposed to the "wall" effect that you were talking about. Austin's voice just has that warmth that pulls you in and brings you along for the ride. And Tim Foust does the bass notes and when he comes in at " and there we were all in one place...." he does full up the space with his deeper voice. It's like drowning in rich gooey velvety chocolate. Rich, full and powerful.

Tim (the bass) reminds me of a really GREAT bass guitarist in both timbre and melodic line in this. It's gorgeous, and yes, very different from "wall of monochord" singing.

Good to see you! Space looks amazing. J did a fabulous job. It was beautiful to see Don be included in his own song. He sounds amazing at 70+ years old. PTX is my favorite a cappella group but HF is growing on me. I’m not much of a country fan so didn’t naturally seek them out. They did a beautiful job as HF and supporting-hugging Don’s vocals.

In the making of video for this song, Don McClean the original singer songwriter of the song, kept apologizing that he couldn't sing it the same way he did 50 years ago. He may not have the high notes or strength of his earlier voice, but he does quite well I think. He had nothing to apologize for. They have now sung with Don McLean, the Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers ,and not to forget their backing Jewel on the Christmas edition of The Sing Off. My favorite is them teaming up with The Air Force Band and Lee Greenwood, for an emotionally uplifting version of God Bless the USA. They have established themselves as true Country pioneers. Just wish the country establishment would recognize their talents. There are so many good songs from the band, it is hard to choose which are my favorites.
@Arcusfp13 жыл бұрын
I agree, the country music establishment just has trouble accepting a band who got their start and fan base in such a unusual way,and that will on occasion step lut and sing something very uncountry.

This song is full of implications that cover a large History of singers, songs, and tragedies in a short period of time. Makes some knocks against a few of them too. Even mentioned Janis Joplin. Calls out some of the Fakes and tabloids of the time. Ya, I was there the day the music died. Plane crash. At 75, I thank you for playing this song. Brings back a lot of memories from a time I wish everyone could have experienced. Thanks.

Austin, solo 2/high tenor, is from Georgia, and Tim, solo 4/bass, is from Texas. Rob, solo 3/lead tenor, and Adam, beat boxer are from Minnesota, (Adam) Chance, solo 1 and baritone, is from Alabama.

The order of which they sang (after Don McLean) is Adam Chance (called Chance), Austin (high tenor), Rob, Tim Foust (the bass - Chance takes over the bass line while Tim sings) and there ist Adam Rupp (in the v-neck) doing the beatboxing. I think Austins timbre (the one you pointet out) ist similar to Mitch's from PTX - they cut through more.

Thank you for great reaction. Just love that Home Free started and ended this cover with the original artist. Love their collaborations with the other original artists as well. Just crazy that Tim can sing so low and then do those high notes. When Tim does his solo Chance takes on the base (baritone who did first solo). The second solo was done by Austin, their high tenor. Rob, their lead tenor had the best part and for a moment i heard Mick Hucknall from Simply Red come out of his mouth on two of his high notes. Adam, their beatboxer just had a blast. And lastly Don MacLean doung his song as good as ever at 75years of age. Love this

The Static Comment if I am not mistaken was about a Video where movement or lack thereof was intentional! Home Free are Master's of Tongue and Cheek, as well as on purpose planning based on what they want to portray or make fun of depending on the story and the song! Be careful not to diss things about Home Free until you have learned more about them!😊

Don wanted to recreate his original for the 50 year anniversary and he said he wanted it peppier. He said Home Free understands harmonies, so that's why he wanted to do this with them. There is a behind the scenes of their making of this. They worked with the great arranger HF uses, Darren Rust and he worked with Don to bring out the best in his voice. As Don didn't feel his voice could do much at his age. But Darren made it awesome! The whole thing is wonderful! Take care. PS: If you haven't had a chance to watch Home Free do things like Can't Stop the Feeling (tons of fun and movement) to get their true personalities, watch some of their live shows. Many on the internet. Then you see why I've gone to 7 of their live shows and would go many more if they came West more than once a year!! lol. They are showmen, fun, talented, great friends, interact totally with the fans and make you super happy! If you like country enough, watch them do a fun one, Hillbilly Bone.

I only just discovered your channel (have watched around 6 of your videos to date!), via Homefree's music videos. You popped up as a reaction channel, and I've been trying to find another like-minded person (The Charismatic Voice being my other favourite) who actually listens and comments intelligently to music you have no previous knowledge of. THAT is what a reaction channel is!!! I like the fact that you are not afraid to show REAL emotions that are raised in you by music. I thought I was the only person who cried over this song, still do, and I am a 65 year old male!!! Thank you for a truly honest review, and ignore the ignorant comments from people(?) who watch videos then comment whilst not fully understanding how the genre works. All they prove to the world is how ignorant and self important THEY are! They think you, as a music teacher, should have heard EVERY song ever written? Pure ignorance/stupidity on their part is all I can say. They should keep watching the FAKE reaction videos they are obviously used to watching! I for one have subscribed to your channel, and actually commented on it, which I very rarely do as I only speak when I have something I consider meaningfull to say! Thank you for your excellent REACTION video, see you again when I've finally watched ALL of your previous efforts. It may take a while!!!! Keep it up!! 👌
