Since people require these things daily, it's important to keep them affordable. 28:55 CATSA wanted to inspect my 4L tub of salted beef I brought for thanksgiving. Fair enough. They didn't seal the tub back up and everyone on the plane had salt brine on their luggage. I used to work as a cashier...groceries deemed essential are already tax exempt. That's why you get weurd things where donut is taxed because it's a snack, but a box of donuts is not taxed because at that point it's considered a food or a meal (or it might have been bagels).
