Two other attributes; very easy to maintain yourself - easiest valve clearance adjustment in the motorcycle world and the best engine oil and sludge clean-out also, so cost of ownership is low. Compare this with the cost of dealer servicing of a big, modern Ducati or BMW - eye watering. Secondly, Guzzi's are over-engineered and over-built. They go forever, very high mileage examples are common. With that comes reliability. I have two Guzzi's and one of them, a 40-year old LMII, I have ridden to Mandello, Italy, and back, from Scotland with zero prep, twice. Never let me down and a joy to ride on the open road and the Alpine twisties, all day. Love it.

Whole heartedly agree with you on your first point.It’s definitely the best looking adventure bike out there.The Super Tenere takes second place to my eye.I really wish they still made the Stelvio.I’ll have to look for a late model with low mileage.Yours is the most comprehensive review I’ve seen on the Stelvio.Great work!Be safe out there!👍👍

That's a good-looking bike! And as you said those extras on the bike are huge especially on a adventure bike. When you describe your Guzzi and that it was different then all the other bikes out there. That's exactly why I ride my bike we have a Harley-Davidson sport Glide it's different than all the other bikes I see and boy is it comfortable and rides well so I'm very happy with it great video thanks brother😎

Good video, glad to hear you decided to keep the bike! CARC is not maintenance-free though. You do need to check and should replace the CARC (shaft/final drive) oil which is essentially same as the Gearbox (transmission) oil, every 2 years or 6000 miles (whichever comes first).

Randy could you please tell me your opinion between the Stelvio and the Trophy...i love the look of the Triumph the presence...and the fuel consumption....in the other hand the Guzzi is simple easy valve clearance...and on of capabilitie....i sold my suzuki gsx 1400 and i am between these two.Kostas Greece

Excellent review, I have the exact same engine in my Griso and that engine puts the MOTORCYCLING back into the motorbike :) My bike is everything yours isn't tho, mine has rock hard suspension the kind that makes you stand for the smallest bump on the road, but it's tuned to me and is the best handling bike I've ever owned. I could go to sleep entering a constant radius sweeper and when I woke up I'd still be on the same line ... But my Griso hates dirt and falls over just looking at dirt in the distance. I cringed watching you ride on that trail, expecting a face plant at any time, don't do it, Guzzi just jumped on the 'scrambler behemoth' bandwagon like everyone else ... the fakers! It's not a NTX650. Sweet, slow, very high and quite capable. I'm sad they are gone from the world now. My bike struggles for range as it has a tiny tank, but it's beautiful and cheaper to fill ;-) But the ride ... ahh the ride! My standard Griso seat is a ordinary looking longish flat seat, nothing remarkable about it but it is the most comfortable seat Ive ever had, who can explain it ... my butt is in love. What's not to like, well, the Guzzi isn't the most reliable bike, but I think of it as character. If it just refuses to start one day, then you probably needed to stay where you were for some reason, who are we to question fate ? While I'm on that subject, I recommend you service the shaft asap, only because Guzzi have been known to be very measly with their grease, and while you're doing that, do the swing arm bearings also ... same problem. Grease them early and you'll have no problems, they will last forever. Oh, a really good idea is to wire the rear wheel bolts, they can stretch and loosen, then they come out and you think, 'hey look at that, some moron has lost his rear wheel!" And finally, in my experience, a Guzzi is the easiest bike in the known universe to work on, pull up a chair to each cylinder when you check the valve clearance, easy peasy! I've had 17 road bikes and worked on them all, the ease of Guzzi maintenance is epic! Happy trails!

I got a Tiger 800 XCA, because chain maintainance does not bother me, there is a thicker lubicant HKS Czech that increases chain lube intervalls up to 2500 kms, so heading to the North Cape from say somewhere in Germany with 1,000+ kms interstate or Autobahn transits kind of works flawlessly too.

Great review buddy I totally agree looked at the new v85 tt but it comes with very little and by time you add everything I already have on stevio. It's incredible expensive. So I'm keeping my old guzzi. 👍

V85TT adventure version comes with most everything but center stand and engine guards. But yeah stelvio was set off showroom floor

@@vagrant318 Yeah the one's we get here in New Zealand only have the different colors and seat but everything else is a extra to get everything I have was half the cost of the bike again. A lot more expensive than the stevio ntxs where. And I still like the 1200 motor.

I have the same NTX here in France. Could you please tell us what is this windshield of yours? It's definitely not standard. Looks nice with the anti-bufeting hole in the middle

I bought this windshield in June from a company called California Scientific. You’ll find them if you Google ‘Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 NTX Windshield’. They have three sizes. I got the big one but then had to cut it down because in the lower position it was in my line of sight. Not sure if they deliver to France though. My first bike was a 1983 Honda CX650E....with the transverse twin.......also with a shaft drive, by the way. On a cold fall and winter day I used to delight in pulling up to a stop sign and reaching down to cup my hands over the engine heads for a wonderful warm-up. That was a great bike!

I had an issue with maintenance (broken an allen key and some more fuck ups) and that ended up destroying the valve adjustment on the exhaust side on one side of the engine. Rode the bike for a 10+ kilometers like that, at highway speeds. Lost power over 5k rpm but under was fine. did not end up doing more damage so this engine is pretty bullet proof.

The bike does break down but it's pretty solid. I like it despite its faults. Next up is a video about 5 things I don't like. Gotta keep it real.

The engine is pretty much bulletproof. I’ve had mine for seven years and done 35k+ kms and the engine has not missed a beat. The only thing that failed was the starter motor, which was very easy to replace. All it needs is a regular annual service for the fluids and valve adjustment etc - which is simpler than most bikes as everything is accessible save for bash plate removal to change the oil filter. 😁

Speaking of soul...my super reliable vstrom 650 has none....my Triumph T120 had plenty but the tank was too small and I couldn't bring it onto logging roads without needing to go to confession afterwards. There's a dealer with a 2012 Stelvio and several unsold v85tt's. What would you buy? Why?

The shaft drive isn't "completely maintenance free" - you're supposed to change the final gear oil in there every two years. Check your owner's manual.

Pity Moto Guzzi had to stop manufacture of the Stelvio ( & Griso), as the engine couldn’t be made to meet the latest Euro emissions standards. But I guess it’ll only make our bikes rarer on the road.

"The bike pounds the ground." Made me smile. They are definitely not a sight commonly seen on the roads, maybe that individuality is attractive to some, maybe not, but it is always there. Every one is still hand built in Italy, so even if you have the same bike, it could be different! One last thing, as I get older and my riding days become less, the one thing I don't want to do is to waste my days on a bike with no personality, quirky - yes, characterful - yes, individual - yes, boring - no. Stay safe during the pandemic, that way you can still ride after it's back to normal, (whatever form that takes). It's looked down on, if you go riding in the UK at the moment, and cabin fever is no excuse. :( I guess they want us all to go crazy the day the lockdown ends? Fortunately I am still allowed to pick up my medication on the bike, or I'd be looking for a more creative approach.

I have no way of knowing it you can/will get this message but, I'm thinking about acquiring a 2014 Stelvio and wanted your opinion on whether you would advise against it or not. I've watched all your videos and know your issues and that you have moved on from it. There is one offered by a Yamaha dealer here in Texas with 32,000 miles yet is in good condition mechanically and cosmetically except for the stickers beginning to come off and the normal scratches expected for an older bike. I'm not really interested in much off road - only the occasional dirt road. The price is only $5000. Service is available here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area as we have several European bike dealerships. I appreciate your comments.Thanks, Charlie

Thanks for the question. 5k is an okay price but it is a 10 year old bike. I’ll also tell you that my oil pump stopped working which led to a rebuild being necessary on the engine - 3,500 Canadian. That’s when I sold it because I had enough. Been riding Japanese ever since and not even a hiccup. You might want to look around for a used Super Tenere or Africa Twin just to be safe. Good luck!

Yup, an oil pump failure will kill any engine regardless of where it’s made. The key question is how frequently does such an event happen with whichever bike you choose. I’ve had many fine Hondas and Yamahas which served me well, but in a fairly short period of time their lack of character made riding less fun. When I ride a well kitted and maintained Classic British bike, for example, the experience remains adventurous even though it most certainly requires much more attention. Mistresses require fondling it seems😅. Probably my most quiet, smooth, mechanical problem free bike was my Honda ST1100 spots tourer. But one can apply the same adjectives to my refrigerator. I do get it when one has such a bad experience as you did. But you may have moments of remembering the Guzzi’s unique charm. Thx again for your channel and documenting your experiences.

Guzzi's V-twin was born for military use. First for the the guard corp of republic president named"Corazzieri", than for others armed forces, included american police corp (see Inspector Callaghan movie with Clint Eastwood). I like Shaft drive!.......chain drive is annoying.....Reliable....but Can come out of adjustment, and Sprockets get chewed up fast.........Belt is better than Chain in my experience, Hate to say it! But that's been my experience!

I'm kinda unsure about how to interpret the fuel gauge on my Stelvio. Maybe I'll bring a spare can and run it empty sometime. Also, I get some helmet wind with the new shield on my 2016 model. Looking to get a small visor on top to get the noise down a bit. I've changed the small extra lights for some tiny LEDs. They (the originals) were rubbish and kept burning bulbs constantly. And I've fitted Oxford heated grips. Guzzi's own decided for themselves when I needed heat, and turned off and on when it suited them, not me. Other than a leaky original front fork seal (replaced anyway on first service), I've had no problems so far (knock on wood). I use mostly the top box for day trips. And I managed to find a click on tank bag that fits really well. We're lucky to have got these models as they stopped making them. The replacement (V85) is smaller and does not have the power or the comfort of the Stelvios. Thx again for a good review. Cheers from Norway!

Lucas Graham So all you have to do is 1/2 fill the tank if you are worried about weight..doh! Then when you really need it, like on a long trip you can fill it full. Best of both worlds.😀

First thing that I don’t like about Motoguzzis is the cylinders sticking out - To each his own !! Anyway, if you’re a fan of cylinders protruding sideways and protrusion from a transverse V twin isn’t enough, there’s a Boxer engined BMW R18 waiting for you (for consideration in an ideal economy) 😉

Shaft drive is great, but don't be lulled into thinking that it can't ever break. The one shaftie that I've owned stripped the teeth on the shaft. Because that model wasn't imported (into France - it was a Kawasaki GT550), there were literally NO parts available, and Kawasaki France weren't even going to import one. The bike ended up being trailered back to the UK, and I had the ignimony of having to finish my bike tour...in a f***ing tin box! The best solution is a Scottoiler. You have all the low maintenance advantages of the shaft without any of the handling problems that a shaft causes. And yes, even Beemers have shaft reaction. It may be less than other shafties, but it's still there.
