Where we live on the West of the island, we're moderately high up and occasionally the cloud drops down to cover us. When it does so, the temperature drops near instantly to around 15C, which is the temperature of the cloud... Love your video, and good on you for showing the different envions of the island. When you go up the mountain you really need to be prepared not to burn as the sun impacts you a good bit more, and indeed, the cold... not flipflops :P

@@JumpingPlaces...there are problems in the canaries and Spain too but the issues are poor government decisions around tourist accommodation which has led to a lack of affordable housing for locals. @@JumpingPlaces The interesting thing is, unlike other Spanish destinations, the winter season is the strong season for the Canaries. Since the weather is mild and pleasant in general, in winter many Europeans (British, Germans, Nordics...) visit the Canaries as the temperature is better than all Europe. The strongest economy is tourism and they receive nearly 15 million visitors a year, a lot, even more if you consider the population is about 2 million.

@@heikeherbert3683 You shouldn't generalize. Parts of Maspalomas/Playa del Inglés are incredible, even there are a whole bunch of Hotels as any tourist destination. The Dunes are huge, so hotels are way far from the coast. The promenade from Faro towards Pasito is nice, too. So it's Mogan Port and certain parts of S Agustin. I know ideally no hotels is perfect, but many times is unavoidable. Don't forget tourism there started in the 60s, no much control then. But if what someone is looking for is beaches, most are very nice.

The capital of the Canaries actually switches every 4 years. In this phase it's Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and in the next 4-year phase it will be in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (the biggest city of the Canaries) in the neighbor island of Gran Canaria.
@JumpingPlaces3 ай бұрын
interesting, any reason they are always switching?
@satanishangover3 ай бұрын
@@JumpingPlaces There's always been a very strong competition/rivalry between the two islands, so the only way to agree where to place the capital (being islands is important, too) was to place it in the top city of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, switching every 4 years. 😄
@lathat402 ай бұрын
This is not true! Both Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are capitals simultaneously. Santa Cruz is the capital for the western islands and Las Palmas for the eastern ones. It does not switch.
@satanishangover2 ай бұрын
@@lathat40 Of course, it is true!! I better know, as I'm from there 😄. I'll try to explain it clearly, as it's not too easy, as we have islands, cities and provinces sharing the same or similar name, and it may be a bit confusing. The Spanish autonomous region of the Canary Islands is divided into two provinces: 1) Las Palmas; which capital is the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (largest city with approx. 400k inhab., in the island of Gran Canaria). It comprises 4 islands: Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and the recently-declared official island, the tiny La Graciosa (geographically, an island; administratively, belonging to Lanzarote). 2) Santa Cruz de Tenerife; which capital is the, equally-named, city of Santa Cruz the Tenerife (approx. 200k inhab., in Tenerife, the largest island). It comprises also 4 islands: Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Now, to clarify your confusion: The Canaries indeed have two region capitals, the cities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (in the island of Gran Canaria) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (in the island of Tenerife). The Statute of Autonomy of the Canaries established in 1982 that those were the 2 governing capitals of the Canaries, to be switched every 4 years. Thus, each term it switches to the other main island (each with an official President residence palace), and the President resides in whatever island is the capital at the time. To offset, the VP resides in whatever main island is not the capital at the time. All this above is very true, and in place for more than 40 years! Hopefully, it's totally clear now.
@lathat402 ай бұрын
@@satanishangover eso tiene más sentido! Pero ambas siguen siendo capitales, lo que cambia es la sede del gobierno. Yo también soy de Canarias :) perdona por la confusión

@@JumpingPlaces Sadly not; but I always stay in the Capital, beautiful Las Palmas, and it attracts a different clientele. Digital Nomads like myself, but also mostly Spanish tourists, or Europeans who want to enjoy museums, great shopping, authentic cuisine and especially cultural events. The South, like Playa del Ingles/ Puerto Rico, caters more for the package tourists, is almost totally built- up with eyesore hotels and thus, in my eyes, much uglier. I always stick to the North, Las Palmas has an absolutely amazing beach , parts of it ideal for surfing. I also love Agaete/ Puerto de los Nieves. "At the time, buying black local sand was too expensive due to its scarcity, so importing white Sahara Desert sand from the Western Sahara (then the Spanish Sahara) was investigated. The white sand was also more appealing for tourists. In 1971, the city council obtained a loan of 50 million pesetas, and purchased 150,000 cubic metres of sand, weighing around 270,000 tons, from the El Aaiún region. It was transported by the company Fosfatos de Bucraa, and 5 million bags of sand arrived in the ship Gopegui. It was used to fill the beach in the first half of 1973 to create the artificial beach of white sand, which opened on 15 June 1973, although with initial problems due to red ants and scorpions that were imported along with the sand."
