This episode follows the end of the Mercian Supremacy and follows the achievements of Alfred the Great of Wessex. Most of the focus is on Alfred's conflict with the Vikings and his reforms at home which were the foundations upon which an England was built.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. from what i understand, alfred isnt called the great because of his miliary victories but because he was a true christian king. when he defeated his enemies, he didnt slaughter or enslave them as was the habit of the time, instead he gave them the choice to become his subjects protected under law, which meant that the vikings werent wiped out in england but instead became steadfast supporters of the english realm. theres a story i was told that exemplifies alfred: his army was besiging an enemy castle and his army had captured the young son of the the lord of the castle. it was usual to demonstate hopelessness of the beseiged by maiming of hostages. usually the son would have been made blind and tortured in front of the castle walls. instead alfred showed the son to the castle walls but rather than torturing alfred played conkers with the boy and taught him chess. this was astonishing behaviour. when the seige was ended there was no looting or pillaging, and the lord was allowed to remain so long as he pledged fealty, which he did with tears of gratitude. in later years the boy became one of alfreds most loyal ministers. This and other reasons is why he was called great. Mercy, compassion, intelligence.

This is nothing compared to what inspired GOT though. The War of the Roses, which happened almost 500-600 years later, was the real inspiration for that. Wessex is considered boring compared to that. Afred is considered a pious christian king compared to the kings during that period

I heard the same thing, which bothered me, too; but in re-playing it a few times, what is really being said is, " Alfred married his daughter...to the ruler of Mercia", which then made sense. Perhaps this producer/narrator could re-do that, saying something like, "married his daughter OFF to...", or gave his daughter to be married to..." But this tonight, 3/25/20, is the first time I have ever come across this site, and thank this man - whose name I did not catch, nor seem to be able at the moment to find - for this! He has done a real good job, even though he has to speak so fast to get it all in in 10 minutes! Richard Duff.

@Drew Madison Are you sure? Yes the games are works of fiction but they are based on factual events. Every assassins game I've played was somewhat of a history lesson. They're just remixed to include a fictitious character which is in someway involved in all major events in that era.

A quick interjection at roughly 1:20! The last battle in dumnonia (I've seen conflicting reports of whether it was considered dumnonia or kernow at this point idk) was at Hingston down in North Cornwall on Kit hill where the Dumnonian and Viking armies rallied against the invading wessexians and were resoundingly defeated. Though oddly enough the king of Wessex allowed the king of dumnonia to swear fealty to him, retaining his land and titles and being named the Duke of Cornwall (or there abouts). This is largely considered to be maybe the first or at least the oldest continuous duchy in the UK

Actually, all the Vikings that invaded England were called Danes, for example Eric Bloodaxe was of Norwegian royalty, but they still called the land he ruled the danelaw. The word Norse refers to the language(Old Norse) and the culture of the people of the time which was very similar to pre Christian Anglo-Saxon culture (Tiw, Woden and Thunor being the old English equivalents of Tyr, Woden and Thor). The Anglo-Saxons did not distinguish between the Vikings which is understandable as Scandinavians spoke the same language at the time. There was no Danish or Norwegian, just dialects. Even today, the Scandinavian languages enjoy a high level of mutual intelligibility, especially if the dialects are geographically close.

The term "viking" comes from an old nordic verb called viking. The are many runestones where a relative is said to have "gone viking". I think the "vikingr" word you refer to comes from the old nordic verb. At least that's how it is taught in Scandinavia ;-)

Its a small detail, but it's worth noting that not all of Wessex spoke English or Latin, Cornwall still spoke Cornish (Kernewek) until the language became extinct in the late 1700s

Hmm... I can't help but notice that, throughout all this, the readily available Wales doesn't seem to have ever been fought over. What is the reason for this?

id guess its because its quite hilly and hard to hold territory which wasnt that fertile. There where raids in wales but no real conquests by the vikings or anglo-saxons due to this.
