So comical that, in the Schwartzman match, they analyse the mark for like a minute, like some first-class detectives or CSI/forensic lab guys, and then a replay silently pops up and shows that the umpire was completely wrong. Come on, if the hawkeye is there anyway, why don't they use it?

I really wish there was video equipment for foot faults( I know it exists but it needs to be used at all tournaments). All the players never, ever believe they can make a foot fault, its impossible for the chair umpire to see anything and the line umpire feels bad because they are not supposed to be talking to the players and are always considered to be amateurs by the players. So there needs to be some sort of video proof in my opinion. As well as hawkeye on clay courts. Get rid of the human error that is possible. Nobody can complain about hawkeye decisions.

"Robbed" is a bit dramatic, no? For one thing, the replay doesn't definitively show whether or not it was a foot fault, so it very well could've been. Even if it wasn't, the call came on a second serve at the beginning of the second set. It's not like a call went against him in the final game of the final set. Garin had plenty of opportunities to come back and win the match and didn't do so. Isner deserved the win.

I really don't like the attitude that some players have where they think a line judge should consider the situation of the match before making a call. Garin was going on about how it was unfair that a foot fault came at break point on his second serve. It doesn't matter if it's the first point of the match, a break point or he's match point down, if he foot faults, it will be called. It reminds me of when Wozniacki complained about a call from the chair in a match against Sharapova, and then got frustrated because she felt the umpire should have considered that she had no challenges left before he made the call! Garin's frustration is understandable, but to go on at the umpire about the experience of the line judge is just arrogant and disrespectful to the officials. On the other hand, it's nice to see an umpire be authoritative instead of trying to soften the blow to the players and undermine the line judges. Cannavan handled the Garin situation well by trying the end the conversation. The situation didn't warrant an explanation, and his actions were very fair to Isner.
@Shsbqrtx
@Shsbqrtx 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's debatable whether he handled the situation well. Why is it debatable? Same situation with Nadal for example, do you think he would've been such an arrogant umpire how he was with Garin? I truly dislike that Garin guy but Cannavan's attitude sucked.
@samuelwilson9082
@samuelwilson9082 2 жыл бұрын
@@Shsbqrtx I agree with your point about Nadal and the other legends for that matter, but the special treatment argument doesn't have a place in this situation. It certainly has no bearing on how Cannavan handled this specific call. I'm failing to see how Cannavan was arrogant, I'm afraid. Is he arrogant because he didn't allow himself to be spoken to with disrespect? I don't agree at all. Too many players think it's acceptable to speak to (or about) officials in a disgraceful manner, as Garin did in reference to the line judge who foot-faulted him. Garin would rather believe that the umpire is inexperienced instead of accepting the possibility of him actually foot-faulting, so it is Garin who was arrogant here. Cannavan simply tried to end a conversation that was a lost cause, Garin delayed the game and got the appropriate code violations. The umpire did everything right.

@@Wizard101duncan How is that relevant in any way? What point are you even trying to make? Regardless, a foot fault is easier to spot than any line call involving the ball, so it’s very likely the line judge was right. Even more reason for the chair umpire to defend his call.

Plus, it means that Garin was implying that the line judge was somehow "crooked" and was trying to help Isner somehow. Very dangerous line to tread if you question a line judges integrity. Stone-cold truth is this, it doesn't matter when a foot fault occurs, you just have to take it in the chin and keep playing. In this situation, try and break back the next game. It's a truth that apparently many players have a problem with. I don't understand how they think having a 5 minute breakdown can help them play better going forward, instead of just shaking it off and keep playing. How can they honestly believe these rants can somehow get them more focused?

I'm surprised people only just found out how much of a brat he is. He's been like this his entire career, from ITF to Challenger and you'd think he'd change at the biggest stage but somehow he's still just as entitled. And he doesn't seem to want to change, even said it on Twitter like yesterday. I'm afraid it's impossible to fix this guy

I don't understand why tennis players' reasoning suddenly breaks when it comes to foot faults. Should we consider in-out calls differently when it's a break point? Should we give a pass on touching the net when hitting a volley if it's an important point? Maybe you'll say that biting the line with a fraction of an inch doesn't make a difference, but if it doesn't make a difference, then why not take that much more of a margin and avoid the risk of getting penalised altogether?

Can you really imagine the other way round in USA? Isner being called an unclear foot fault on a break point in the USA? No, right?
@john_reese
@john_reese Жыл бұрын
@@javiert.592 I really don't see your point in relation to what I'm saying. If Isner stepped on the line, why shouldn't he receive a foot fault, whether it happens in the US or elsewhere ? Why when it comes to foot faults your mind suddenly thinks they are imaginary and judges call them on a whim ? Especially, why would you think a judge would find it worth the controversy to decide to help Isner win by calling an imaginary foot fault in the semi-final of a ATP250 tournament, at 1-0 in the 2nd set, in what is possibly the less subtle and the less practical way to cheat you can think of ? There is no telling where the match could go after that event. It could as well boost the opponent. Many pro players are trying to get away with having no space between their foot and the line when they serve, when this probably gives them no perceptible advantage at that level of serve mastery, and at the same time they expose themselves to a slight variation in their movement and/or judge perception and as a result to that kind of drama. I don't think it is worth it for them, and in their place, I would rather increase the margin. I do think there should be a foot fault cam, and I wouldn't be surprised if we discovered that many foot faults are actually not called, because judges are afraid of the drama.
@javiert.592
@javiert.592 Жыл бұрын
@@john_reese I think the line judge was not fair. I am sure Garin wouldn't have recieved a foot fault if it hadn't been on a break point. In a Davis Cup match between Spain and Croatia which took place in Croatia Spain also recieved a foot fault on a break point which was proved to be wrong. The line judge can call anything and they know it.

Not only does Nadal take forever to start his own serve, he also holds up the opponent on their serve. His routine is unjustifiably long both when he serves and returns. It's an unfair advantage to allow him, Djokovic, Sharapova when she played, etc to just take however much time they want to get ready and be princesses about their routine. It is a legit strategy to serve at a faster pace to disrupt a player's rhythm and you can't do that if the umpire allows the returner to take extra time to prepare. The rules need to be applied very strictly and if you aren't ready for the serve, you accept the consequences. I also feel the same way about players being allowed to mouth off to umpires and line judges for inordinate amounts of time with little to no consequence. We have to expect and enforce professional behavior or else this is just going to get even worse. It's a joke.
