@samuelwilson90822 жыл бұрын
I really don't like the attitude that some players have where they think a line judge should consider the situation of the match before making a call. Garin was going on about how it was unfair that a foot fault came at break point on his second serve. It doesn't matter if it's the first point of the match, a break point or he's match point down, if he foot faults, it will be called. It reminds me of when Wozniacki complained about a call from the chair in a match against Sharapova, and then got frustrated because she felt the umpire should have considered that she had no challenges left before he made the call! Garin's frustration is understandable, but to go on at the umpire about the experience of the line judge is just arrogant and disrespectful to the officials. On the other hand, it's nice to see an umpire be authoritative instead of trying to soften the blow to the players and undermine the line judges. Cannavan handled the Garin situation well by trying the end the conversation. The situation didn't warrant an explanation, and his actions were very fair to Isner.
@Shsbqrtx2 жыл бұрын
I think it's debatable whether he handled the situation well. Why is it debatable? Same situation with Nadal for example, do you think he would've been such an arrogant umpire how he was with Garin? I truly dislike that Garin guy but Cannavan's attitude sucked.
@samuelwilson90822 жыл бұрын
@@Shsbqrtx I agree with your point about Nadal and the other legends for that matter, but the special treatment argument doesn't have a place in this situation. It certainly has no bearing on how Cannavan handled this specific call. I'm failing to see how Cannavan was arrogant, I'm afraid. Is he arrogant because he didn't allow himself to be spoken to with disrespect? I don't agree at all. Too many players think it's acceptable to speak to (or about) officials in a disgraceful manner, as Garin did in reference to the line judge who foot-faulted him. Garin would rather believe that the umpire is inexperienced instead of accepting the possibility of him actually foot-faulting, so it is Garin who was arrogant here. Cannavan simply tried to end a conversation that was a lost cause, Garin delayed the game and got the appropriate code violations. The umpire did everything right.

I don't understand why tennis players' reasoning suddenly breaks when it comes to foot faults. Should we consider in-out calls differently when it's a break point? Should we give a pass on touching the net when hitting a volley if it's an important point? Maybe you'll say that biting the line with a fraction of an inch doesn't make a difference, but if it doesn't make a difference, then why not take that much more of a margin and avoid the risk of getting penalised altogether?

@john_reese2 жыл бұрын
@@javiert.592 I really don't see your point in relation to what I'm saying. If Isner stepped on the line, why shouldn't he receive a foot fault, whether it happens in the US or elsewhere ? Why when it comes to foot faults your mind suddenly thinks they are imaginary and judges call them on a whim ? Especially, why would you think a judge would find it worth the controversy to decide to help Isner win by calling an imaginary foot fault in the semi-final of a ATP250 tournament, at 1-0 in the 2nd set, in what is possibly the less subtle and the less practical way to cheat you can think of ? There is no telling where the match could go after that event. It could as well boost the opponent. Many pro players are trying to get away with having no space between their foot and the line when they serve, when this probably gives them no perceptible advantage at that level of serve mastery, and at the same time they expose themselves to a slight variation in their movement and/or judge perception and as a result to that kind of drama. I don't think it is worth it for them, and in their place, I would rather increase the margin. I do think there should be a foot fault cam, and I wouldn't be surprised if we discovered that many foot faults are actually not called, because judges are afraid of the drama.

Garin was right to be angry. And the explanation from the umpire "the line umpire is experienced". Well, so what? So is he from the USA as well as Garin's opponent. That fault on break point was trash

Well we dont have a good view of it...if we had a good side on camera angle we could tell...bottom line is that the umpire has to depend on the line judge for that and was absolutely correct in how he handled the situation...whether the line judge made the right call or not none of us know for sure because we dont have the angle or the footage to verify it
@Editor_Hound2 жыл бұрын
Well, let's say he was robbed on that particular call. Was he also robbed of the complete match? Unless the call came at match point, I don't see the point of that intensive breakdown from Garin.

Yeah giving break to ISNER is like giving a whole set to him. Ive had something similar happen to me. Playing from down a break is extremely tough ESPECIALLY when that break is given for free to the opponent

That's crazy I feel like matchs can be easily corrupt. It's all rigged. If you complain you get warning, fines . That's crazy you dropping your racket violently you get code violation. They have to understand that's sportsmanlike , players have emotions sometimes it feels good to evacuate your frustrations/ anger that's human .

Not only does Nadal take forever to start his own serve, he also holds up the opponent on their serve. His routine is unjustifiably long both when he serves and returns. It's an unfair advantage to allow him, Djokovic, Sharapova when she played, etc to just take however much time they want to get ready and be princesses about their routine. It is a legit strategy to serve at a faster pace to disrupt a player's rhythm and you can't do that if the umpire allows the returner to take extra time to prepare. The rules need to be applied very strictly and if you aren't ready for the serve, you accept the consequences. I also feel the same way about players being allowed to mouth off to umpires and line judges for inordinate amounts of time with little to no consequence. We have to expect and enforce professional behavior or else this is just going to get even worse. It's a joke.

It happens when you step on the line when hitting a serve. It's very uncommon for a pro to make one, and even more rare for an umpire to call it.

@vinaye202 жыл бұрын
Well unless we see a better angle of the footage we cant say for sure he was robbed...but the umpire handled it well because he HAS TO depend on the line judge...after the call has been made the umpire cant change it...would be nice to implement a video review system like in the atp cup so that these situations could be fairly handled
