You nailed it right on the head! I wish there are more coaches like you who know their stuff and teach the right concept. It took me years to figure out and unlearn all the 'flick the wrist', 'brush the back of the ball' techniques before I now finally compete at 4.5 and senior level. Keep up the great work!

I play tennis for about 20 years and in all this time i have focus my arm as the spin and force generator to the shot in the forehand. Just about a month ago i could realise that arms and shoulders are just a suport for the stroke. What really makes the most effort in the stroke is the legs and body rotation, in a fluid and complete moviment. Your video just shows that two. Fantastic.

Best video I've seen that covers the forehand technique. It's not easy to learn as someone that learned the old school way. I think grip firmness at impact while maintaining a loose arm is extremely tricky too.

Very clarifying ! I am just struggling with this, how to use your wrist when developing the forehand and this video helped me to understand how not to use the wrist and try to "windshield" but rather travel from low to high in a natural swing path which ends up in a not forced but loose followthrough. Thanks a lot. Jan

Your assessment confirms what I have been practicing. In order for not having the early wrist and arm’s rotation, players need to focus on the swing path. The early rotation of the wrist will cause the racquet to finish in front of the left shoulder or forearm instead of touching the left forearm. Could you please comment on a few other issues? 1) When taking the racquet back, the left hand will be released. At what point will the left arm will be folded? Is it folded when the racquet moves back and is parallel to the ground? 2) The purpose of the left arm is to keep balance. But could it be also used to measure the distance to the upcoming ball? Should the left arm be straight out pointing to the incoming ball like Serena's traditional hitting? Or should the left arm just straight out and parallel to the net? 3) When the racquet is flipped at the slot position, should the left shoulder be opened before or after the racquet flip? Or does the left shoulder opening cause the racquet to flip? 4) Should the flip occur first and then the hit starts with the rotation of whole body to create the swing, then the fold of the left arm just follows? Or the left shoulder rotation creates the fold of the left arm and the flip of the racquet then the swing takes place independently? Thank you very much

Good instruction video! So it is a case of hitting through the ball from low to high, instead of brushing up the ball with the wrist. I used to be very wristy with my forehand and it has taken me a long time to get rid of this technique, as he says you do not get any heavy power with this shot, just spin with no weight of shot.

Solid explanation, I think when the commentators mention terms like brushing up the back of the ball, or lot of wrist movement, confuses people, I agree, with your explanation, could you do a comparison, on a traditional forehand compared to a buggy whip and differences in swing path, contact point of the ball please.

@tennisaceking75867 жыл бұрын
I want to ask a question, if it's the traveling speed of the racket with little wrist and arm rotation that creates the spin, why are some player's spin, like Nadal and Jack Sock more heavy than other. Don't get my question wrong, I like your explanation but since every pro racket speed comes at about 100 miles an hour it may mean that all would be giving out similar spin. So I'm curiou to know why some players are far ahead in creating spin than others, what are they doing differently. Thanks. Ken
@TheWakeupsheeple7 жыл бұрын
At the 10:00 mark (and others before) where you are saying that they don't rotate their wrist is incorrect. They do rotate their wrist it's just smeared out threw the swing from just before contact and finishing of the swing. In other words as you set the lag and drive the butt cap towards the ball there is a point in time (just before contact) that you do actually rotate the wrist. You just don't stop your arm to do it. So as you swing your arm from just before contact and all the way around is the same amount of time that one should rotate the wrist (as you put it). You use all the facets of the swing to create drive and spin. Hips, shoulders, elbow, forearm and wrist pronation. All while pulling, pushing, rotating and twisting. To many people want to focus on a few aspects they feel are more important to discredit other aspects they feel aren't needed as much. It's a kinetic, flowing chain reaction set in motion by all the forces I already mentioned. If you have a reverse take back (which a lot players are going to) there is some violent reaction when you go from that to the lag position that helps spring the wrist rotation that you are trying to undermine here.

Hi Insight Tennis Coach: Thank you so much for great detail of the important of extending" 8 - 12 inches toward the targe after contact/hitting the ball. Since, I can see it in your slow motion but it's so difficult to see or feel it at real time/real speed. How do I practice this critical component of the forehand (or same concept/mechanism on the backhand)? Perhaps by NOT rolling the wrist of NOT rolling the forearm focus is a good way to accomplish this extending task? Thanks, Dan Le
@insighttennis44878 жыл бұрын
Dan..you are certainly welcome....thank you for your message ....the best way initially to work on the extension is to think about hitting through several balls from a lower position to a higher position...allow your racket to stay in the path of your target a bit longer before you rotate the wrist and arm to finish the stroke...the same is true for the backhand...hope this helps...Cheers...Rick
@lethedan8 жыл бұрын
Your recommended "think about hitting through several balls ..." has helped me both aspects of "extending the contact zone toward the target", and amazingly "keep eyes on the ball" longer :) Kill two bird with one stone :)

Is Jack sock FH an exception to the rule?
@insighttennis44878 жыл бұрын
Jack - ...great question...interestingly enough he is not an exception...visually it is very deceiving because it simply happens too fast...while it is true he has a very violent racquet drop and release back...if you look carefully you will see he still hits through the ball and extends out to the target on impact...this plus the low to higher racquet trajectory is the key to the heavy ball....Rick

Disagree ... I get heavy power from the “whipping or snapping” action of the wrist. I don’t use a brushing action. I use the right shoulder and right elbow in combination to whip the wrist. The energy created is delivered to the racquet face and sends the ball flying. After Contact, I hit “through the ball” and then follow through. A Continental grip is used.
