Ladders in blast pit can be a pain. They're very loud and attract the tentacles.
@fllthdcrb7 күн бұрын
Well, I think it's more the loud sound you make if you fall off one instead of climbing all the way to the floor. That said, though, _HL1_ ladders in general are a pain, for different reasons.

you can actually take 0 damage at that last part and it's intended/designed that way. if you just keep running forward through the fall, you land on the table, table breaks your fall, gives you more hp and squishes the headcrab underneath at the same time.

I was looking for this comment! Right, perhaps not the most intuitive thing if you don't do it accidentally on the first try, but that's how it's "supposed" to be done. I've never seen someone try going around the tube, I thought that was brilliant! Too bad the devs didn't take that into consideration and reward it.

You run by default. You can hold SHIFT to walk (or whatever key you set). I'm enjoying your videos, keep going... you seem to actually listen and catch on stuff (creature reacting to sound) unlike other players. I'm yet to see if you figure it out on your own that you have to throw yourself on the fan, I was stuck there on my first run.

Hello machhi. Haven't seen you in a long time. Hope you are well. Anyway, thanks for the new video.
At 28:00 ish you're supposed to land on the table with health, not sure why it doesn't work always. Maybe it is meant to be positioned so you hit it if you run forward without stopping, but the angle looked a bit wierd in your screen.
@MacchiGames9 ай бұрын
I think this one makes the most sense. Whenever I would fall I would stop trying to hold down the walk button, which probably prevented me from landing on the health kit. Still, it was a hilarious bit, and it was definitely worth it after finally surviving haha!

@@MacchiGames I think it might be a bug on the steam versions of the game. I think i've encoutered it my self too. I remember it being easier back in the day. Or maybe my memories are failing me. Fun fact: The water/liquid in Half-Life used to look better and more transparent in the original game, but I think the newer directx (?) shaders kind of ruined the water effects making them solid looking. It always surprises me how non-seethrough most of the water in this game is when I replay it, although there is an option for water opacity in gold source old level editor.

HL was originally written for either software rendering or OpenGL. (A GLide wrapper was used to map OpenGL calls from the software to GLide calls on 3DFX video cards, at the time the best way to render HL for most of us!) The Direct3D renderer came later, and was less feature rich. Not surprisingly, given that DirectX was brand new at the time. I always found it odd that Valve didn't improve the Direct3D rendering quality, even as they locked out older versions of Windows, and thus locked out the older versions of DirectX. Try switching to OpenGL rendering instead of Direct3D rendering. The improvements you mention are found there.

Weirdly, the first part of your playthrough was thoughtful and considered, with you taking your time, going slow when necessary, and not just rushing in blindly. By this third part, you're just racing around blindly half the time. A couple of pieces of advice. 1) TURN OFF "ALWAYS RUN." For me, I have "run" assigned to left-shift, right next to my ASDF movement keys. I run ONLY when it's advantageous (which in this game is almost never!) Mostly, I move slowly and methodically. Stop and examine a room or space before rushing in. 2) Always check to see if, for example, crates can serve a purpose (climbing, etc). Only destroy crates (or barrels) with no other use, or ones with a secondary use - AFTER you've used them. But... as a general rule... never leave a space behind with any crates you can destroy which you haven't destroyed. Note... some crates cannot be destroyed. Easy to tell. The indestructable ones CLANK (metsl on metal sound) when struck with a crowbar. All destructible ones "crunch" instead of "clank." 3) Plan your attacks. Ideally, snipe enemies before they notice you. If not, have your retreat path planned out. 4) Choose the right weapon for the right job. Certain weapons show up later, and become very valuable, but remember, ammo conservation is crucial. Only one weapon regenerates its ammo, and later in the game that weapon (which you don't have yet) will, of necessity, become your most important weapon. 5) You don't have the "long jump module" yet. It was designed for a circumstance you... haven't encountered yet. When you get it, finally, trust that you WILL need it, however! 6) You just discovered that scientists are ALL capable of healing you. I'm amazed at how few players seem to understand that. Also, yes, guards can increase your firepower. Get a bunch of guards following you and the increase is pretty significant (plus, the dialogue between NPCs can be hilarious!) The NPC dynamic is further emphasized in the first expansion to this, "Opposing Force," but it's important here, too. 7) Turrets are easy to defeat. That's the main thing I use grenades for. Stay out of their trigger lasers (the red ones) and toss a grenade at the base of the turret. Knocking a turret over automatically, though not necessarily permanently, disables it (in HL2, you'll actually be able to use turrets yourself, by the way!) 8) Every weapon has targets it is effective against and targets it is next to useless against. Try to figure this out early, so, say, you don't use a "boss killer" weapon against things your crowbar is better suited for. (Hint - I use the crowbar almost exclusively when fighting against headcrabs and headcrab zombies, at least in HL1. NEVER waste bullets, shells, etc, if you can get away with not doing so! ) 9) Most serious threats have an "easy solution" you can find if you slow down. For example... that turret on the stairwell which you just raced past, and which killed your NPC buddies? There's a switch you can use to turn that off... and then, if you wish, turn it back on! I could go on, but trust me... turn auto-run, and "auto equip weapons" both off. And sloooow down. It makes the game more enjoyable, AND a lot less frustratingly hard. Finally... one of the levels you rushed through, you referred to as having "dated design." Nope. The design was excellent, but you were not thinking it through. Don't attribute "bad design" to issues you experience due to "shooting first and not bothering to ask questions later." Trust me... the slower approach is (a) far more realistic (I'm a combat vet, just FYI), and (b) far more enjoyable to play through. Think if this as if it were REAL. Try to think about what you'd do if you were really in that situation, and do that. Would you ever blindly rush into a room when you knew danger was around? Nope, of course not. You'd peek in, check it out, look for targets and for safe spots, and use stealth, cover and concealment as much as you could. You'd make every shot, and every move, count. So... try playing that way (much easier without "always run" enabled!) and see if that works better for you. I'm confident that it will.
@MacchiGames7 ай бұрын
This is a bit late, but thank you so much for the advice and helpful information! You are correct though about me starting to just rush blindly this episode. Is it weird to say that I feel like the character’s movement speed does contribute to it? It might also be just because of the frustration of wanting get it over with after multiple deaths. Which definitely sucks because I really want to appreciate the game a lot. Although it is unfortunate subtitles isn’t an option in this game. I’ll definitely turn off always run next episode along with implementing a few of your tips! I think slowing down will also help me make better decisions (and probably aim better too) Thank you so much!! Hope you enjoyed the video! ❤️
@josiahpaez46014 ай бұрын
@@MacchiGames Well, that's one way to play half-life. Personally, I think it is designed to be a run and gun style of game. I leave auto run on and use shift to slow down when needed. Whatever floats your boat, or suites your fancy, etc. But it is true that if you are taking huge damage and you think "that's stupid, there should be a better way to do this" then there probably is, like that moment you had when you almost tried jumping on the barrels in the radioactive waste. And I'll say it again, though I see that you already acknowledged it in someone else's comment, destroy more boxes! Lots of loot to be had! Big boxes, little boxes, boxes with tarps, boxes with metal borders, all the boxes! You might also consider binding an easily accessible key to "quick save". Comes in very handy instead of going to the menu every time. Loving the playthrough! Play it how you want to! Just be sure to have fun!
