Would be nice to see how it works on a baritone uke.
@TenThumbsProductions Жыл бұрын
I could do a baritone/capo tutorial. Essentially it is the same concept. If you put the capo on the second fret everything goes up in pitch two notes, one for each fret. So when you play a C chord like you normally do on your baritone it is a D chord now all the notes have gone up two in pitch. C->C#->D If you were to put a capo on the 5th fret you would have all the same shapes a standard ukulele because all the notes have gone up 5 notes in pitch for the five frets. That is why the G chord on the baritone is now a C, just like a standard tuned ukulele G-G#-A-A#-B-C. Five frets, F notes. If you take the baritone tunings D G B A and go up 5 notes on each you’ll see it’s G C E A

Should we tune the ukulele again after putting on capo?
@TenThumbsProductions10 ай бұрын
Great question, no, you don’t need to.
@andypandy198910 жыл бұрын
Can someone please advice me, I'm trying to wrap my head around this. Say I'm playing with my friend and he's using a guitar (standard tuning) on capo 3, so I put my ukulele on capo 3- for example he's playing c, g, f, g- would I still play the chords I know on a ukulele to be c, g, f,g, or would I have to use different chords to play along because of the pitch change from the capo on the ukulele? Reason I ask is because putting a capo on the ukulele so high seems to make some chords sound a bit, ew.
@TenThumbsProductions10 жыл бұрын
Great question Neb. First off I don't really use the capo on Ukulele that much, sometimes in the key of D# or Bb (capo on the first fret) as well as E or B (capo on the second fret) because barre chords are pretty easy on the Ukulele once you learn how to play them. The idea behind the capo for me is people who want to play certain songs but still struggle with barre chords. If you take a guitar and put a on the 5th fret and play the highest 4 strings, bam, the same notes as a Ukulele! (With a low g of course). That point of reference will help you when you start playing with the guitar. Now, to your original question. If your friend is playing guitar with a capo on the 3rd fret and plays the C chord, the G chord and the F chord he is actually playing the Eb chord, the Bb chord and the Ab chord. Okay, no why is that? Because the capo has moved everything up three semitone, a semitone equaling one fret. For example the C chord, 1 semitone becomes the Db, 2 semitones becomes the D and the 3rd semitone becomes the Eb (or the D# depending on which way you look at it). I recommend you doing the same little exercise the the G and F chord to see how I got the Bb and Ab chord. So to play along with your friend you just need to play the Eb, Bb and Ab chords. Well this chords can be difficult, so how can we use a capo to make them easier? If we put a capo on the first fret of our Ukulele the Eb is really a D shape because remember we move everything one semitone this time because the capo is on the first fret. So the D shape is an Eb, the A shape is a Bb and the G shape is a Ab, so with a capo on the first fret you will be playing D, A and G shapes and your friend with the capo on the third fret will be playing C, G and F shapes but you will both be playing Eb, Ab and Bb chords. Which by the way are both I-IV-V progressions. Learning the roman numeral system will make this transposition much easier, and if you want to get nasty Eb major pentatonic will be your principal weapon of choice for improvising. Was that to much music theory vocab or was it clear?
@andypandy198910 жыл бұрын
TenThumbs Productions A bit music theory lol but I suppose I kind of get what you're saying. Problem is I've wrote a song (on guitar) and I'm going to meet my friend next month to record it, so he will be playing the guitar part on capo 3 and I have to come up with something for the ukulele. I learnt the ukulele chords of that song, however because the guitar is on a capo the ukulele sounds awful playing along without one, but like I said it sounds a bit awkward (like the G chord just sounds so out of tune when a capo is on 3) so from watching your video I assume I need to rework the chords for the ukulele to match the guitar on capo 3, but like where do I even start with that.. Is there a site that translates the chords? I'm pretty new to playing ukulele along with a guitar, and it seems to be a lot more complicated than just playing a ukulele C along with a guitar C. Do you know of any sites or even just bands who use this formula so I could research into this a bit more. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question btw, I appreciate it : )
@TenThumbsProductions10 жыл бұрын
I am happy to help man, that is what I do! The formula is that semitone idea. Try the capo on the first fret with the Ukulele and play the D shape, A shape and G shape for this specific jam and see how it goes.

How would I play a C with the capo on the fourth fret?
@TenThumbsProductions4 жыл бұрын
You don’t really have a good option on the 4th fret. On the third it would be the shape you normally use for A and on the 5th fret it would the shape you normally use for a G. Why does it have to the be the 4th fret? Your only option there is still barre chords and most of them pretty high up the fretboard

I am so confused. I am trying to play 'knee deep" by Zach brown and I'm supposed to put my capo on the first fret and then play DDGG/DADA but have NO clue where to put my fingers once my capo is on to produce a D G or A sound. HELLPPP
@katiejohnson10647 жыл бұрын
what do you mean in the video when you say G is two notes below A? I would think it would be one? My background is in piano but have been playing around with the Ukulele and I am just so confused
@TenThumbsProductions7 жыл бұрын
Okay, so I got a little bit into the theory behined it but the idea is this. You should put the Capo on the second fret and than after that play D chords like you normally do, A like normal and G like normal, just like you would without a capo. Now, that is how you jam the tune, the why part is this. They are just showing you shapes, but really because that G shape for example is up two frets higher than normal it is actually making an A chord in sound, but you still just use that same good ol G shape we know so well. Does that help?

so if a song I want to play has a capo on the 4th thingy and I need c g and f, how do I play it??
@TenThumbsProductions8 жыл бұрын
Does the song play the C G and F with the Capo on the 4th fret? If that is the case the chords you need are E (because the Capo is on the 4th fret C moves up, so C, 1st fret C# 2nd fret D 3rd D# and the 4th being E) the other two chords are B (which is the G shape) and A (which is the F shape) so you need E - B - A.

I dont get how it helps play the terrible E..??
@TenThumbsProductions5 жыл бұрын
It is through a process called transposition. You can play the E chord without play the E shape. A capo on the 2nd fret and then you play the D chord, while it looks like a D. Why? Because the capo moves the notes up, so even though it looks like a D chord (D, F#, A notes) it is really a E (E, G#, B notes)
