Here's even more Dark Souls 3 content for you all! I'm excited to keep going and clear this massive list I have 😅 Earlier this week, I filmed quite a few more reactions for Bloodborne tracks (including Ludwig's boss fight) so we will be on the FromSoft train for quite a bit longer! I do want to react to some other games too, so ill try to sprinkle them in here and there. 🎶 As always, I'm open to your suggestions on what to react to for future vids! Thank you all for watching 💜

The breathing most likely represents chills, due to her ice attacks. People often do the heavy exhale when they are cold.
@AnOldEnglishBloke
@AnOldEnglishBloke 27 күн бұрын
Just seek the puff of ice dust 45° behind your character to know where she moves to. Move quick for a free backstab 😁 As for the chilled intake of breath... I'd assume it to be a stealth thing. Intake of cold air as she disappears so she can remain silent until she slinks in for the surprise attack on unaware players. It's interesting to hear a music industry pro remark at how complex and distracting many of these ost scores are, yet as players we take it all in whilst simultaneously being tuned in enough to decipher the subtle sound queues during the boss fights too. Acute audio spatial awareness.
@ck14ev
@ck14ev 7 күн бұрын
@@Jm-zd6iu Its more likely her relationship with father Ariandel. How her cold whispers poison him into keeping the rotting, stagnant world alive with a flame he still thinks hasn't gone out instead of setting the whole thing ablaze and starting over. Either way she definitely embodies the villainous controlling role of ice in the game as does her theme-her in the painting and Pontiff outside of it.

The older brother Lorian is mute, while his younger brother Lothric is crippled. During the first phase of the fight, you're fighting Lorian on his own and the soundtrack is purely instrumental without a choir since he is mute. In the second phase, Lothric joins the fight to revive his brother and use his magic against you while sitting on his brothers back, and that's when the choir kicks in. It's one of the best fights in the game for me.

At 5:32 you can slightly hear the choir motif in the background but at the end it roughly translates in Latin "Sulyvahn, Sulyvahn, ascende solio" which as far as I know means "Sulyvahn, Sulyvahn ascend the throne" which perfectly describes his character as a usurper.

Ive listened to that Sister Friede one many times because she is tough. Hardest boss in the game imo. Im not as familiar with ds3 lore but ill try my best to explain because her stories quite important as it links to Gaels story. She lives in a painted world with Father Ariandel. The painted worlds are a bit confusing but they are literal paintings in the real world and also are small worlds of their own that people can be transported to and live in. After a while every painted world starts to rot and must be burned away so that a new painted world can be created. Sister Friede enters the painting and manipulates Father Ariandel in to not burning the painting away and just letting it slowly rot. I believe she does this because she is in some way afraid of fire because she once tried to possess the First Flame in the real world but it badly burned her. Many of the people that live in the painting are downtrodden, forlorn, tragic members of society that didnt have anywhere else to go. So she acts sort of as a mother figure to all the people in the painting and they all love her. How I understand it is shes sort of doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. The painting is getting more and more corrupted but she doesnt want to let it go. She wants it to stay stagnant and slowly rot. Because the real world of Dark Souls is essentially in a big unbreakable loop Gael wants to create a new special painting that wont rot anymore. Sort of an escape from the cycle of the world. But he needs the Painting of Ariandel to burn. So he tricks the player character into getting trapped within the painting hoping we will defeat Friede and let the painting burn. The second thing he needs is a pigment for the painting. The other paintings used blood as a pigment but he wants to use the essence of the Dark Soul. The Dark Soul was used to create humanity and is held within the bodies of all the old lords he created humanity. So Gael goes and kills and devours all those old lords so he can possess the Dark Soul and bring it to the Painter who will create this new perfect world. After following a trail he left and with some weird time travel shenanigans we find Gael at the end of time. Hes gone completely insane and has become almost animalistic in his hunt for the essence of the Dark Soul. Its implied he knew he would go insane on his quest but was hoping the player character would find him, kill him and take the Dark Soul and give it to the Painter so she can use it as a pigment for this new uncorruptible Painted World. That is how the series ends. We give the Pigment to the Painter and she begins painting a new world. That probably makes no sense to someone who hasnt played the games but hopefully that gives some context. Sorry its so long ahaha.

The game even fakes you out when you pass second phase. It gives you a reward and everything to distract you. Only for her to slowly stand and have that music kick back in... its so good.

Pontiff sulyvahn, for all intents and purposes, is the main villain of ds3. He’s not the final boss, however and there is a reason for that. Sulyvahn was born in the painted world of Ariandel, a refuge for all manner of creature that have lost their purpose in the unforgivable world. Sulyvahn however, never lost his purpose, because he never had one. So ironically enough, he just didn’t belong in a place of belonging. So he leaves the painting to find his own purpose. While traveling the world, sulyvahn found that much like him, this world was devoid of any purpose. That’s when he discovers the profaned flame. It is a flame that never fades, and seems to have a will of it’s own. Maybe it was being in close proximity to the profaned flame that corrupted him. Or perhaps it simply nurtured and guided a darkness that already resided within him. Either way, sulyvahn found his purpose within that flame. He joined the dark moon covenant and manipulated it from the inside. He poisoned the god gwyndolin and usurped the throne. He enslaved the people of irithyll, turning them into hideous monstrosities. He enslaved a daughter of gwynevere, first making her a dancer for him, then making her one of his outrider knights. They were knights who would slowly be driven mad and turned into monsters as time passed before being exiled. He allied himself with the cannibalistic sludge that Aldrich had become, feeding him children and gwyndolin as well. We fight and kill pontiff at around midway through the second half of the game, and there is a reason for this. Despite all the cruelty he had inflicted through his tyranny, sulyvahn was no god. He was no king nor lord of cinder. Much like everyone else, he was just another person seeking purpose in a dying world. And we can hear the desperation and his conviction to cling to this purpose in the second half of his music. The first half of his music represents the title of pontiff, and the facade of nobility and divinity that he portrays. The second half of his theme represents sulyvahn. His mask has slipped, he is being driven into a corner and has nothing and no one left to hide behind or deceive. He’s fighting tooth and nail to keep his purpose going, and yet he stilll falls in the end.

Pontiff is my favourite boss in fromsoft history. He is pretty much responsible for most major events in DS 3. The main menu thene was originally his theme, and in early development was meant to be the final boss. He is a manipulating tyrant, who enslaved the low and the meek, corrupted his knights and deacons with the deep, and wielded the profaned flame, which corrupts man and caused a kingdom to be wiped out pretty much. He also fed a god to a cannibal who devoured children in masse, drove out the royal family out of their home, imprisoned another god in a tower and spread his influence across the land with his cursed outrider knights whom he gave a ring that would turn the all in horrible beast by the time they were well away in their journey.

The duet may be that connection with yuria as they are both female voices. Slave knight gael and darkeater midir are probably some of my favorite ds3 tracks. Sulyvahn's is a story of the corruption of power. He was born in a world that was basically a refuge for those suffering in the world of the game (Lothric by the time we get there as the player character). But he never knew the suffering of the outside world, and wanted to experience it, so he left. He had an aptitude for magic and discovery, and once made a discovery of a "sinful" object that would grant him power. He used this to gain political prestige and allowed his followers to perform pretty vile things while he himself began to experiment on people to cement his rule. Ultimately we find him the ruler over a broken city clinging to whatever power he can, though he started his journey in complete innocence and ignorance; the more knowledge he gained, the more he allowed it to govern his actions. This is my 2nd favorite fight in the base game. It is dynamic and frenetic while maintaining an air of mournfulness and severity that most other fights possess, but few can top.

Ope, put that way, it becomes really clear why Sulyvahn was originally planned to be the "Eclipse Old King" Final Boss. The sky in the endgame being a direct visual homage to the Eclipse from Berserk was one thing that, yes, one could definitely latch onto. That "made a discovery of a 'sinful' object that would grant him power, used this to gain political prestige, and allowed his followers to perform pretty vile things" bit is the most direct parallel with Griffith that they could make. I wasn't trying to make the comparison, was left trying to remember what the "sinful object" was in the context of DS3 (I get it now), and my brain seized the rest of those narrative similarities and temporarily filled in the gap with "Behelit" in the meantime.

It may have been said already but the presence of bells is quite important and related to the lore. The dark souls series revolves around the age of fire that comes to an end. Each time the fire fades, a powerful being must link the flame (sacrificing his life in the process) to keep the age of fire going, extending it artificially. The thing is, the age of fire is coming at an end no matter what and more broadly the world is dying. When this occurs, bells toll to resurrect past lords who linked the flame so they may do it once more. Except in Dark Souls 3 they choose not to. That’s where you come in, resurrected as well from the grave although your past existence was a failure and you were unable to link the flame yourself. Which is why the bells tolls are intrinsic to the story. They are the sole reason of your existence, to perpetuate an age bound to end. (Aside from the main theme which you already covered, I would highly suggest you Darkeater Midir’s OST and -especially- Epilogue, it is a blessing and a fitting theme given what you know now)

The reason why you hear church bells at the end, most likely signifies that the Twin Princes are, Lords of Cinder, or as one Lord of Cinder, a candidate to revive the dying First Flame, in order to continue the cycle and usher further the Age of Fire, but in the story, Prince Lothric, doesn't like the idea of continuing the Age of Fire. Love the Twin Princes theme. It matches well with the title theme and shares harmonic progressions. Yes it's a harpsichord playing those rapid triplets in the background. Once again, lots of 7th chords (maj7, minor 7, diminished 7's) which makes it sound more classical. Major Vi - i (2nd inversion) - iv7 - i (2nd inversion) - V is such an epic progression, with the sustained pedal notes (C and E flat) at the top until the imperfect cadence.

I've always been into big orchestral symphony and classical, even as a youngster many, many, many moons ago. All of my peers were strictly into either metal or electronic during the 80's and 90's, so I was somewhat controversial 😅 I didn't care. I have always appreciated every genre and most sub genres, and now myself and all of my old school friends are in our mid-late 40's, the majority share my enthusiasm for allsorts and they still tell me that they wish they'd been as open minded as I was when we were young.

Ah, Pontiff Sulyvahn... DS3 was my first From Software game, and he was the first boss who made me REALLY struggle. Nowadays it's easy, but oh boy, the song does bring me memories! Spear of the Church is another great piece from this OST if you're into the church/catholic theme.

From 16:27 it is my favorite part in all of the souls OSTs, classical meets metal, it sound like the sky is falling down, like the aliens declared a holy crusade against humanity and huge asteroid size crosses are coming down on earth.

Hi there, me again! Love your vids! That theory of Sister Friede is actually interesting, however, Sister Friede's theme is more about her! She, like the player Character, is Unkindled Ash! Lady Yuria of Londor, and NPC you meet if you decide to do the "Lord of Hollows" Questline/Ending and one of the three sisters of the Sable Church in Londor, states that Elfriede the eldest sister, Sister Friede, had long since abandoned them because she felt great despair after failing to usurp the flame, hence what the context of doing the Lord of Holows ending entails! She left the Sable Church and found the Painted World called Ariendel, a world within a painting! She wanted to renew herself by being the protector of the people and residence that lived there! So she does everything in her power to prevent calamity there, but with the events of the game outside the Painted World, Rot set in and the residents tried to use fire to stave the rot. In short, Sister Friede's Boss OST shows how she wants to strive to make a better world through her version of "Kindness"! Hence the breathing and "creepy" undertones, she's fighting to keep the world she's been protecting the way it is!

So, about Pontiff. Long story short without too many story spoilers: Almost entirety of DS3 plot is happening because of Pontiff, he's one of the few true villains in Dark Souls verse There's also the fun little fact of Pontiff supposedly meant to be a final boss of the game at first with his theme being the DS3 Main Theme, however it was changed during development

You could say Sulyvahn is the main villain of the game. He is associated with Aldritch, who he uses to further his own goals. Handed Gwyndolin to him as a meal, ellimimated all opposition from those related to the gods of Anor Londo, proclaimed himself as pontiff and regent, sent his knights to Lothric (2 of which are BOSSES) to ensure the flame isn't ignited again and isolated the deacons that follow his associate so that they wouldn't usurp the power he initially usurped. However, those who are around Aldrich seem to go insane, so some say that when you fight him he is afflicted by that madness

When you listen to Gwyn, Lord of Cinder and Soul of Cinder, i would also throw in the Nameless King's OST, the motiff is slightly harder to spot in his theme but it is there which is cool. Unrelated but you should listen to Dark Sun Gwyndolin from DS1 before/with Aldrich, Devourer of Gods from DS3

Woah I'm a souls veteran and never realized the Gehrman nod there, very interesting. Maybe it's referencing the fact that Pontiff was originally supposed to be the final boss, like Gehrman was the last games final boss? Pontiff was also supposed to have different ost too🤔. I could be reaching tho.

Hey! Really love your reactions! I'm a huge nerd for FromSoftware games (Dark Souls, Bloodborne etc), but since I believe everyone in the comments have at least sugfested every single track from these games (lol) I'd like to suggest something different, and maybe a little underrated. Its the soundtrack of Donkey Kong Country 2. I believe is one of the best OSTs of all time and would love to see you react to some of the tracks. Dont know if it'll be popular on the channel though, since I don't think many people are interested in it. Anyways, keep up the good work! ❤

all the lore we know about the pontiff is that he was born in the painted world of ariandel and raised by will o wisps. he left the painted world and went on to conquer the city of anor londo, renaming it irithyll, enslaving the princess of that city and forcing her to be his "dancer", take that how you will. after some time he banished the dancer and continued his tyrannical rule of the city, eventually delving into the caverns under the city known as the profane capital, where he found an unholy flame called the profane flame, he took this power and used it to keep control of his subjects. he also allowed a person named aldritch to live in the city, aldritch was known to kidnap and eat children, and for some reason he was deemed a "saint" and the church that pontiff ran, tolerated this behavior... so yeah, pontiff sully is not a good dude, hes the first real villain that the player runs into in the game and is also typically the first huge roadblock for progression

Bit of lightweight context for you. A recurring theme in Dark Souls games (Bloodborne too) is that of repeating cycles. Worlds live and die, then live again. Often the culmination of these games offers a choice to the player, to either repeat the cycle or break it. Sister Friede is the custodian of a world inside a rotting painting, something of a refuge for the wretched and outcast. This world is supposed to burn down and be remade by another painter, but she has found a way to arrest the cycle, for even as the world decays, it is home to those who have no other. By the time you hear this music, you have met Friede many times, and every time she pleads with you to leave the world alone. In phase 2, the original custodian of the painted world, Father Ariandel, sees Friede's body lying on the floor and breaks free of the shackles she placed on him, allowing him to rise and spread the fire which will consume the world. You can hear this shift in the OST. My personal read is that the breathy choir stabs in the first phase represents the gasping inhabitants of the painted world, struggling to breathe in the rot that is the consequence of her trying to stop the cycle. And once the world begins to burn in the 2nd phase, those breathy stabs stop...

Long lore warning about Sulyvahn from someone who did their homework. The lore of Pontiff Sulyvahn is perhaps the most convoluted because his born home was this painted world, home of the forlorn and forgotten. Sulyvahn was a sorcerer and part tree born of the mysterious tree women who breathe frost magic, and he be the origin of frost into his game, DS3. He would leave the painting because he never lost anything, so he was out of place for the out of place. He escapes with a character the player knows of from a previous game called Gilligan, a former petty thief with a talent for absurdly long ladders. Once outside, Sulyvahn was met with the world that had no place left for many others he's aware of now residing in the painted world, and took in for what that really meant. Eventually, he found the thing that had no place for that same world, and yet he couldn't take it back to the painting. It was called the Profane Flame, and it had the ability to warp those who viewed into it as it was a fire made of sorcery and hid the abyss inside of it. He was then inspired to instead change the world with it, slipping into a high position and siezing from the inside. His plans all came to fruition with great success, until we came along with him in our way of our journey. To most people in touch with the lore, it would seem like that's the end of his lore, but it goes deeper. In this universe, fire was seen as the origins of souls, but the First Flame gave what's called the souls of lords, which there is 4 (Life, Death, Light, and Dark). Ages before the Potiff was a force of flame called Chaos brought with the witches, and within this Chaos was ironically Life. Life sprouted from its mantle as demons, trees, and even parasites. The first witch, Conjuring Chaos in mistake, thrived it into demonkind and attempting to control it turned her tree-like. Generations past, and in Dark Souls 2, we see another woman, a sorceress of frost attempting to control it for her selfless lord, after he gave himself to stop it with all his knights. Nobody would remember the king's name. This sorceress was the first true manipulator of frost we've seen in the series, and signs of her frost show within the painting of DS3, a time after her great home was lost, but she wasn't any ordinary girl with magic, but instead a child of the Dark Soul, of 4 known, and represented fear. A nature alike to that Profane Flame.
