We received the medication for my husband because he was expected not to live more then a month and he was afraid to end up in the emergency room again since the cancer continues to build up fluids behind the longs. This didn't happen and David died peacefully in the early morning of December 25 2023. I love Hospice and since David passed I have viewed many video's of Nurse Julie in order to understand . Also, from my limited experience as a hospice volunteer. I understood that the majority of people who receive the medication don't end up using it. It's important to emphasize how much having that feeling of control and having a sense of having a choice is sometimes all people really need to feel comfortable. They don't always have to take the medication in the end. Something to think about.

@@joecheffo5942 I think it's probably complicated and vary depending on the person. However, as I stated, I think just simply having the feeling of control, that you have the medications and can take them if you need to, confers a major psychological sense of well-being that is substantial. Also, yes, good point, of course how well pain is managed is extremely important. And if pain was the issue and it was brought under control, it may no longer be an issue.

Just want to remind you about the most most important decision we need to make before we die, and that is to receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior. I just wanted to let you know a little about what the bible says. It takes more than just believing in God. John 3:3 says, we must be Born Again to get to heaven before our time is up.. Everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glorious standard, and all need to be made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift. We need to be made free from sin through Jesus Christ. Bible also says, its not by works should any one boast. So being a good person does not get you to heaven either. The only way to heaven is by repenting of your sins, which means a change of mind, and putting your faith and trust in Jesus. Romans 10:13 says, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. So you see, there is a need for salvation to get to heaven. That is why Jesus died on the cross. He took all of our sins upon him, so that if you accept Him as your Lord and Savior, you can have eternal life in paradise. You do not get there being a good person, or doing good deeds. Many people believe that is all it takes. Jesus also says, that I am the way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes unto the father, except through me. So please make that decision, so that you can have peace and comfort before your time is up. Its the most important decision of your life. You can then have that peace and assurance of salvation in your heart. All you have to do is humble your heart and pray with faith,... "I repent of my sins, and I turn to You. You said in Your word that if we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we shall be saved. I ask You Jesus to forgive me of all my sins, come into my heart, and take control of my life. From this day forward I want to live for you. ..... It's not about the words, it's about your heart. The Lord will then send His Holy Spirit to live on the inside of you. The Holy Spirit is Gods seal of salvation, and your evidence you have been Born Again. He will transform your heart and mind. He will bring you into a personal relationship with Jesus. You will become a new person inside. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new”. Its truly amazing! You will be filled with peace, love, and joy of the Lord inside you. All the fruits of the Holy Spirit. He will comfort you in your time of need, and give you the strength to endure. No matter what you are going through, Jesus wants to help you through it. You can lean on Him. Its the most important decision of anyone's life. God's Word says that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus and not by our own efforts or works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Grace Alone. Jesus is the only way to heaven. Please believe me, its all in the bible. Its the Word of God..I am not judging or condemning anyone, just letting you know there is much more if you put your trust in Him. Jesus cares for you, and does not wish for you to be separated from him. Please don't wait. Today is the day of salvation. He loves you, and does wish for anyone to be apart from Him, but to have eternal life in heaven. I'm praying for you. Please ask Jesus to come into your life today, my friend, You are special to Jesus. Romans 10:9-10. I fought and lobbied and called and showed up to Sacramento many times to get this passed in California. My wonderful, happy, terminally ill aunt shot herself in her backyard and died alone a few days before Britney Maynard (California woman who moved to Oregon to access this right) died peacefully in her own bed surrounded by family by taking the end of life medication. The juxtaposition was too much to bear. SO happy that this is the law here now.

My mum actually died 10 years ago to the day. On 25th of april 2013. And it was her own choice through euthanasia as the pain from 2 types of terminal cancer were making life impossible to enjoy and there was no pain medication that worked. And she wanted to end at her own terms. We had a fabulous morning with friends and plaing her favourite music. We even danced a bit. Then friends left and only me and my brother and one friend stayed. She took the poison, we even laughed a bit more and then she said "I just gotta lay down for a bit" she closed her eyes and a bit later she was gone. And still had a smile on her face....I love you mum!!!

Thank you so much for tackling this difficult topic in such a loving manner. This is the way I will go if I am given a terminal diagnosis. I have seen friends and family members face prolonged pain and suffering. I see nothing redemptive in wringing out every second of life in those circumstances. What people don’t realize is that modern medicine can prolong life long past the time people had years ago. In the end, for me, it comes down to quality of life over quantity of life. Also, I don’t want to put my family through the physical, monetary, and emotional strain of caretaking. I don’t fear death, but I do fear what I see as pointless suffering. And, thank you for addressing the issue of people not forcing their religious beliefs on others. If you disagree with Death with Dignity, by all means do not pursue that path. However, do not rob others of their decision to have this choice. Also, there is little reason to fear that people will pressure their loved ones into taking their life. There are many, many safe guards in place. Peace be with you all.

Thank you so much for bringing this up. My wife just passed from pancreatic and was terrified of a protracted, painful death. By the time she was ready to consider the NJ MAID program, she did not have the capability of communicating her wishes with the doctors. Her passing was fast, and thanks to hospice, painless. Understanding that even suggesting the validity of these programs exposes you to negative comments, your willingness to be open about it proves how much you value people's understanding dying processes. NJ passed its MAID laws after my wife's initial diagnosis. It was incredibly hard to inform her of the availability, even when she was becoming more anxious about her departure. At first she vehemently opposed my bringing it up. My guess is her residual Christian childhood lessons caused the knee jerk reaction. Within 72 hours she asked me to instigate the process. While it has yet to endear me to anyone I speak to regarding this, I think arming people with this knowledge has a good chance of providing comfort in their future.

People put their animals down because they don't want to see them suffer, yet they let their loved ones suffer on because of their beliefs. Makes no sense to me. They argue that animals either don't have a soul (not true), or a human is not the same (also not true). We are all animals, but humans have the capacity to think in long terms. All humans should be allowed the choice whether to die a slow, painful death, or to end their own lives on their own terms. When you have sat with your loved ones who are in terrible pain, and you can do nothing for them, you might have a different opinion on this matter. Thank you for your insight and your willingness to pass your knowledge on to people who may not understand. I hope the rest of the states come on board with this and end the needless suffering for so many that do not wish it.

Thank you so much for keeping the ones going through this with a family member. My significant other has a daughter in hospice. She herself was a home healthcare RN for years. She was diagnosed 2 years ago with stage 4 lung cancer. She had 2 tumors removed May, 2022. Was fine for a year. April, 2023 another to get more tumor and tissue. Then October, 2023 final surgery. She has lost most of her sight. Been on steroids whole time and now we are slowly decreasing the dosage. Her adrenal glands shut down. She has been in and out of Hospital, nursing home and our local hospital with PT. She is tired and done. She is telling everyone people can outlive hospice. On top of all that because of the steroids she has osteoporosis and had 6 back fractures fixed. Her brother and father are so upset that she is giving up, at least the dad. Brother also says she is in hospice to get better. She has yet to try to get up and out of that bed. I get it. She was with us for 2 weeks before they then found the last 4 fractures. My children's father passed away 14 years ago from lung cancer in hospice. I was so grateful for hospice. You nurses do such wonderful things in coping with family and caretakers. What would we do without you. I can only hope and pray that the brother comes around to reality soon. They never had any tumors show up anywhere on scans, MRI, or pet scan. So because she smoked they say lung cancer because those tumors were malignant and came from possibly (in my words) unknown origin. I hope to catch you live! Thanks again for all your great content!

I went through the procedure with him and I’ve got to tell you nurse, Julie, that. it was the most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed my brother went out the way he wanted to go on his terms. I have changed my mind about dying. I’m not that scared anymore after he took the medicine it took him five hours to die that was hard on me, but he was sleeping peacefully until the end.

I am hoping this will help someone, in Ontario, Canada it takes almost a month to be approved for this but we do have sedation in hospice (I'm sorry I don't know the full rules) but dad had a counseling 10 min bedside visit and within 8 hours he was sedated to the point where he would never wake up, he chose this because he didn't want to wait a month suffering....this was a beautiful choice too...the patient is sleeping peacefully and will never wake up again, this can be an alternative maybe to states that don't allow assisted suicide?

@@user-tl3uf2fd5k At the moment, only Vermont and Oregon have stopped enforcing their residency laws. The other states still require residency for now. There is also an option in Switzerland, but it's fairly expensive. For that one, you don't even have to have a terminal diagnosis.

There are people who think their beliefs and rules are the only right ones and everybody has to do what they say, they also tend to be control freaks and fanatics. I personally don't believe some things, but I also believe in bodily autonomy and the right to choose. Especially if a patient is well informed about choices and what will happen. If you don't believe the same that's fine, their choices are between the person and whatever God or Notgod they believe in.

I live in Canada and wish MAiD was legal over a decade ago when my dad had terminal cancer. Doctors and the medical system already "play God" when they do their jobs in intervening with treatments to save and extend lives. Sometimes, against patient's wishes by extending lives of terminal patients who want to pass away on their own terms. I think putting the decision in the patient's hands, after all vetting and precautions have been thoroughly reviewed, is the most humane thing to do.

During Covid, we heard of many old people being euthanized while in the hospital - without their permission. The hospitals made money doing this. The doctors made money. A book came out just a few weeks ago, titled "They Want To Kill Us: Here's how and why". by Dr Jack King. It contains some dirty truths about euthanasia. I don't think I would undergo death by doctor in a hospital. Only with a hospice nurse in my home.

I know someone who just did this, but she had to move her state of residence to Vermont and lots of hoops to jump through first. I'm a former cancer patient and there is just a bunch of treatment stuff I refuse to undergo again if it comes back. I've had the Hemlock Society's book"Final Exit" for decades (and it was the guide another friend used to end her life). Permission or not, legal or not, I have a plan, I know it works and I will use it, regardless of whether it's legal or not when the time comes. Thank you, Julie, for helping remove the stigma around assisted dying , your example was so beautiful.

When I’ve felt like I’m too mentally & physically tired to carry on with any type of treatment, I’ll stop everything & go to the beach🌞if I’m still somewhat mentally capable of making my decisions, I’m not afraid to tell someone that it’s time for Hospice. I know my body will let me know when it’s time. My mother died of Dementia last year & her last days were her being basically comatose,in her hospital bed on laying on her back, with eyes closed & mouth wide open. I don’t understand why you don’t close their mouths, for the family. My mother wouldn’t want to die with her mouth open. It’s not like she would have any choice in the matter, but I feel like the family should, especially the members that are there at the death bed.

Just want to remind you about the most most important decision we need to make before we die, and that is to receive Jesus as our Savior. I just wanted to let you know a little about what the bible says. It takes more than just believing in God. We must be Born Again to get to heaven when our time is up.. Everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glorious standard, and all need to be made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift. They need to be made free from sin through Jesus Christ. Bible also says, its not by works should any one boast. So being a good person does not get you to heaven either. The only way to heaven is by repenting of your sins, and putting your faith and trust in Jesus. Bible says, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. So you see, there is a need for salvation to get to heaven, that is why Jesus died on the cross. He took all of our sins upon him, so that if we receive Him, we can have eternal life. We must be Born Again to enter the kingdom of God. You do not get there being a good person, or doing good deeds. Jesus also says, that I am the way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes unto the father, except through me. So please make that decision, so that you can have peace and comfort when your time is up. Its the most important decision of your life. you can then have that eternal peace and assurance before you die. All you have to do is humble your heart and say with faith, I repent of my sins, and I turn to You. You said in Your word that if we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we shall be saved. I ask You Father to forgive me of all my sins, and ask You to fill me with the Holy Spirit. Its not about the words, its about your heart. The Lord will send His Holy Spirit to live on the inside of you. The Holy Spirit is Gods seal of salvation, and your evidence you have been Born Again. He will transform your heart and mind. You will become a new creature. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new”. Its truly amazing! You will be filled with peace, love, joy, kindness, and patience. The Holy Spirit is the difference between religion and a relationship with Jesus. Its the most important decision of anyone's life. God's Word says that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus and not by our own efforts or works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Grace Alone. Jesus is the only way to heaven. Please believe me, and research for yourself. Once its over, there is no turning back. Jesus cares for you, and does not wish for you to be separated from him. So many people think that being a good person gets you there, and its simply not true, so please don't ignore. Today is the day of salvation. He loves you, and does wish for anyone to be apart from Him, but to have eternal life in heaven. Be blessed. I'm praying for you. Please ask Jesus to come into your life today, my friend, He truly loves you! Romans 10:9-10. "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Be blessed

Julie, I love what you do and all the information you provide. On this subject, speaking for myself only I would be against the taking of my own life, and the reasoning behind that is my religious beliefs. That being said I am not in the camp of trying to impose my beliefs on you, or anyone else. The Lord gives us freedom of will. Only he will judge us for our actions in this life. Lastly I don't think any of us knows exactly what we would choose until we find ourselves in a situation that we're going to die soon. There's a lot that factors into the decision to end your own life, quality of life, pain, in my county I think the county would be most interested in whether or not you have your personal property and real estate taxes paid up to date. 😊 thought I'd throw in a little levity there. I live in a state where assisted suicide is not legal. But for me only depending on my quality of life, the certainty i have an incurable disease, and talking openly with my family, I might change my mind. Dying is probably the most personal and private part of our lives. It's ultimately up to the individual. Being a retired nurse, I'd be on Hospice by that point and I could get the job done if I chose to do so. What's the county or state going to do? Lock me up after I'm gone? Not likely, I keep my taxes up-to-date. 😊

We should be able to have the right to die PEACEFULLY in situations in which there is severe suffering. I love animals so much, but it was always baffling to me how we would lovingly and willingly extend care and compassion to euthanize a suffering animal companion, but not a human. We should never be able to push our own personal will or agenda on another person. It should be allowed and it should be an individual choice. I am chronically ill and live with chronic pain and belong to many online communities where this topic is covered - there are people that become so desperate for pain relief that they end their life in violent ways. The person choice of right to die would ensure a much peaceful and compassionate passing.

Hi, I’ve watched your videos for sometime. Can you explain the death rattle? Thankfully my sister was an officer and helped many, also experienced the end of life at car accidents. She was able to walk me thru that process when my grandad passed on hospice. She said this would be his last day with us. It’s a scary sound but I was comfortable staying holding his hand and telling him how much I loved him and I would be ok. He would be with grandma again. He did pass that day but waited for me to grab something to eat and not be in the room. I was so mad at him!! My mom died alone in the hospital when I was almost 5. I didn’t want him to go thru that. I have faith in Jesus. He knows what’s best for me. That was in 2013. I’m not mad anymore. I never could be mad at him. He was my HERO. Love you granddaddy ❤️

Question My friend was dying with all systems failure. She was skin and bones not ambulatory and very tired. When I arrived we chatted about the past for 2 days She slept the 3rd day and was nonresponsive and snored. The 4th day early morning she had peed out and had no muscle response, none. We changed her and put her higher in the bed and her breathing was quieter. But dinner her breathing was very shallow and stopped within 2 hrs and she passed. My question did she actually pass in the morning when she peed out, was completely unresponsive, her eyes were hazy looking to the side, and her muscles were completely flaccid., not later that evening when she stopped breathing.

@jim, We consider death to occur when the heart stops beating. A person can stop breathing, and the heart will then stop shortly afterwards. The peeing was simply loss of muscle control. A body can be cool to the touch, with loss of voluntary movement & still have a heartbeat. 🌷🌞🌷

Are there rules about travelling across state lines for this? I'm in the UK and it's currently illegal here, so much so that even if you simply travel with someone to a country where assisted dying is legal because they don't want to be alone or they're unable to travel without assistance, for example, you can be charged with manslaughter on return, which is pretty ridiculous, IMO. Just taking them there for an assisted death is illegal.

Be blessed

I have been with my relative when she has asked two Dr’s assistants/PA’s and both had no idea this was ok in California!!! Unfortunately crippling pain does not qualify so I’m afraid she won’t get what she wants and now losing hope, her mental health /depression is getting worse so from what you said sounds like you said-she may not qualify because of that as well.

In Canada you don't have to have a terminal illness. You can just have a change in the quality of your life and you feel that you don't have good quality of life you can make the choice to do it. I don't know if they let people from other countries go there to do it but you could check into it

Can a person who lives in a state that does not allow a death choice go to a state that allows it for the sole purpose of ending their aliveness?

I’m wondering too. I’d imagine you would have to reside in that state and be established with a physician? I just want nurse Julie

Recently I saw on the news there was a woman from Connecticut who went to Vermont to enter life. She had made the arrangements ahead and she still lived in Connecticut she didn't have to move there. I don't know how it works but you might want to check into it

Thank you if only this had been an option in the 1970’s my own mother would have used this option. So she took 50 10 mg Valium and l found her and she suffered for a week it was horrible. I had just turned nineteen and if that were the case had l been older l would’ve let her go then. I of course forgive my young self but the memories are still there. Giving grace in the face of suffering is the last beautiful gift to give your loved ones. We have our 95 year old great granddad in hospice right now and it is a blessing and such a love filled way to help us all cross over❤U

Wish I could have given it to my mum 6 months ago when she died of mestasis cancer. She was in so much pain. Morphine didn't really help. I live in England so don't know the rules here. I'm pretty sure though she wanted to survive

I was using the restroom last night, and I was thinking of my mom in home hospice. A week before she had passed away, she just slept (comatose in a way) our bodies naturally let us know when to urinate/excrement.Why in those who are actively dying does that response go away as if they are babies, and will need adult diapers?

I so want this choice if needed in my life. My heart hurts that it is not yet allowed in my State!! How long would you have to live in a State before you can take advantage of the Death and Dignity Law?

Thank you so much for covering this important topic. I wish at some point in time you would also talk about voluntarily stopping eating and drinking VSED and how your hospice works with that or not as well as hospice in general. Thanks

Yes, I would also like to hear more about VSED. Such an important topic! The majority of people unfortunately don't have access to medical aid in dying.

In Victoria Australia the requirements are too strict. I see myself with a bottle of expensive whiskey a cuban cigar and a syringe full of insulin after an evening with my family. They may not even know. Such are the stupid laws.

The law in Vic is pretty much identical to what was described in the video, except no forced waiting period and up to 12 months for neurodegenerative diseases, instead of just 6 months.

We do better for our pets when it comes to suffering and dying. Here in Canada I believe it is legal nationwide ( maybe Quebec excluded?) but there are a lot of rules. It sounds like there, once you are approved and receive the meds, you can THEN decide when and how. Here, I think once you decide you have to do it right away rather than be able to wait until you are really ready to end suffering. But you have to start the paperwork so early, the meds might come before you're ready. I could be wrong, but I know when researching it I didn't like the whole timing of it. Still glad to have the option. Not afraid to die at all, but living and suffering has been my whole life (one way or the other) so suffering while dying does not float my boat!!

@@b.v.437 If you are asking if that is included in MAID in Canada, the answer is no. We were about to approve MAID for mental health (very specific) reasons; but that got put on the back burner. Basically you need to have a life ending illness or chronic illness so that you have zero quality of life. It's not for just being fed up with your earth life.

Ever since I saw my first dog euthanized in the 80’s, I’ve been ANGRY! Angry that my dog could go peacefully, but I wouldn’t be able to. Now that I live in SC, when the time comes, I’ll need to plan way in advance and move to a state that provides MAiD. This should be a NATIONAL law.

I’m so angry about the woman in The Netherlands who has been granted euthanasia on May 28 for what she believes and convinced the medical board that she had intractable suicidal depression and there is no hope of a “cure”. That is so wrong. I get it when someone is suffering from end stage illness and is in pain. But suicidal depression is treatable. I’ve had it for nearly 40 years and I’m hanging in there with excellent professional help and a good support system. Letting this woman have the euthanasia for depression is lazy and unethical medicine. I’m sure this woman can get the help she needs by persistence in finding the right therapist and meds. But I get it when it comes to cancer, AIDS, and other terminal illnesses. Those gobble you up. Leaving before there’s nothing left of you is completely understandable.

Hey Julie, my husband has been diagnosed as terminally ill for many months now. He has cirrhosis, nph, Parkinson’s, oesophageal varices and was treated for liver cancer the Christmas before last ( this may have come back but we are no longer taking him for scans.). We have had several weeks of him only taking small amounts of food but a little more fluid but yeastrrday he had nothing to eat or drink and didn’t want to be woken but could be roused. His mouth was full of white mucus which I cleared with a sponge. Does this sound like we have entered the last stage of his illness? He is in a nursing home where I visit him daily but he hates being there. I’d be grateful for your thoughts. Tish from Brisbane

There needs to be a way for people with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's to have an advanced directive which allows a third party to be a surrogate for them and let them administer the MAID when they are no longer able to communicate, feed themselves, move on their own, and clean themselves. Alzheimer's is cruel. I am not advocating for euthanasia, but for the individual to decide, while they have the capacity to make the decision, to have that option as well.
