I know it doesn't apply to this particular film but in reference to film studios "upscaling" That should be illegal. I'm not even Joking. It's literally false advertising. Because it's Not possible to 'upscale' the film. What people don't realise is that the reason we have 4k Blu-rays of older films which look good, is because the actual analogue print of the film is a very high resolution. Digital is actually so far behind analogue and every time we upgrade digital, we need to take the analogue print and transfer it in order to get the resolution we want. You can't take a 1080p digital image and Just try to upscale it to 4k.. You have to get the analogue print and make another transfer in 4k. For example, IMAX 70mm film is equivalent to about 16k, from what I've read. We obviously don't have 16k discs. So they transfer the film onto a digital 4k copy to distribute.. When we eventually have let's say 10k, we then need to take the original IMAX print and transfer it again to a 10k digital format, which still won't be as good as the original print. But the one thing you *can't* do is Just take the 4k digital transfer and try to upscale it to 10k because it's Just Not genuine. * I only bring this up because Jeff mentioned how Lionsgate does it, knowing that they are charging people more for 4k discs that are literally No better than the regular Blu-rays and I think people should be aware of this because it's literally a con.

dusk1234567890 can’t answer that as I didn’t see it in the theaters. Just watched the 4K last night and while I don’t find it as bad as it seems others do, there is no doubt it’s a softer image than my 2015 Blu Ray. It reminds me of the 2009 Blu Ray which had grain removed and a softer less defined image as a result. The 4K image appears clean but even more obviously soft in its higher resolution.

This transfer is defintely different from the blu ray versions. Seen the entire movie. The color timing is changed but i enjoyed it. DNR is applied and the resulting image is smooth but i did not see any loss of detail. In fact if you see robert patrick's face you can clearly make out scars that could not be seen in any blu ray versions. Also the DTS HD is defintely a remaster and averages over 5.5 mb/sec. It is totally immersive and i found it even better than the german 7.1 DTS HD master and the Skynet edition 6.1 DTS ES HD matrix versions. Yes they could have pumped it upto Dolby Atmos but they would defintely be rereleasing it when Terminator 5 hit the theatres. Overall not a bad 4K but i wont spend my money yet.

I also agree that I didn't like the filters they put on this release. The heavy DNR scrub was probably the worst thing about it, and in looking at comparison screenshots, it looks like a lot of the highlights in the picture were lost (i.e. brighter shine on sweaty faces). *Some* details do look sharper though, so of course I just wish that it ALL looked better/sharper without the bad changes.

It's got 3 different versions of the film, the code to unlock the last version is 8-29-97, this version has all the deleted scenes added.. except for 2 scenes which are in the special features & it's got the "Sarah in the Park" alternate ending. This 4k is a waste of money & almost ruins the movie with all the re - editing. It's a shame that they screwed up the 4k so bad. It's almost too CGI heavy.. with a movie that pioneered CGI effects.. it's just too much for this. Stick with the "Skynet Edition".. it's most likely $9.00 now.

Director's really should preserve both versions if they want to make those types of corrections. I don't mind cgi corrections to make something look more realistic like Blade Runner Final Cut (putting Joanna Cassidy in place of her obvious stunt double was great). Or enhancing f/x like Star Wars. But having Greedo shoot first, adding in that bad Jabba scene, and the little robot laughing at the other robot and getting hit on the top of the head were warrantless, stupid changes/additions I wish hadn't been done. So aside from the cgi corrections Cameron did to T2, how IS the 4k picture? Is it improved over Blu ray or is it a bad transfer and flat like POTC: Curse of the Black Pearl or The Punisher with Thomas Jane? I don't think it's fair to compare some small visual changes to what George Lucas did, I didn't even notice the changes myself. George didn't just make small aesthetic changes, he made story alterations, lengthened scenes, and then made the old versions unavailable. Even the older versions of the Special editions are only really available as whatever the best version was at the time of home video release, you can still choose which version of the film you want to watch and if this version of the film isn't to your taste then it's easy enough to pick up the Skynet version or the million different other releases of Terminator 2, it came out on HiVision, D-Theater and they even had a DVD that came with the Movie in HD in Windows media 9. I wouldn't even call this a new restoration of the film to be honest I think that is more of a marketing thing. The truth is they probably had to rescan the film in 4k or something so that they could make the 3D version and then they decided to just put it out as the new restoration in order to sell more than just some 3D and UHD discs. I'm actually a little surprised you made such a big deal out of the "changes" I would have thought that more focus would be put on the excessive noise reduction and the modern color grading.

@joshuacalkins4 жыл бұрын
I might have skipped buying it If Od seen this video! But then, I mostly saw this film on VHS, so I don’t even think of it as an HD movie. This release also removed (or added?) the truck windshield from the canal chase. I’d like to be able to turn certain edits on and off on my copy. I’d like a copy of Star Wars that lets me choose any alterations from a checklist. Original titles, original effects, 7.1 audio, no color changes...

Now I know why they sell it for $5 these days.

Did the 3D release from last year have the same alterations to the scenes?

Thank you for the info. I'll skip this release, but you did mention you have the previous Blu Ray release. Does that one have the extra scenes the the Artisan Extreme DVD release have?

I think I'm more annoyed at the fact that it's the theatrical version that's in 4K and not the special or special extended cuts of the film. The theatrical version has too many cuts that I can't watch it over the special edition, because you're missing out on so much more scenes and context of the overall story. The changes, I'm all for. Removing the stunt double's face and adding in Arnold's (for example) makes perfect sense- I mean, Arnold IS the Terminator. I'm glad that was changed.

Hey, does anyone know if the Skynet Editon or the 2015 version is better?

The 4k looks amazing.. i think most people have either shit tv's with shit hdr in them.. i love the original its cool with the oldschool grain n stuff but on a modern 4k tv (i got the Sony Z9D) it looks like shit compared to the remaster... The editing of the stunt double etc and the knife etc just makes it more polished.. and the people saying theres a weird tint to it or whatever probably have there tvs setup wrong cause i couldn't see jack..

BaxWar2092 when films are filmed on a film like T2 (super35mm film) it has grain and if you use dnr to remove that grain you take the fine detail away since the detail is in the grain... Ppl like myself have calibrated tvs and know thing or two about films and can see that theres just too much dnr used in this to make it better for 25th anniversary 3D wich was the main purpose for this remaster

Agree with Bax War the details and color timing has changed for the better. Defintely DNR has been applied but when i compared it with all the versions on blu ray i noticed details that were not there in blu ray versions. For example the scars on robert patrick and edward furlong's foster mother. The stain on the jeans of the foster dad. The mettalic finish is so pronounced on the skull closeup in the title credits. The difference when you look at arnolds face which looks waxy but in the same seen when you see the other bikers they facial features are more defined. I do feel that most of us did not get the same 4K Blu ray. Remember there was a delay . probably something somewhere horribily went wrong.

People often associate the "tint" with the HDR enhancement.

The quality of this release is a business decision: give people something new/sorta better, but leave out a lot so we can sell upgrades. You'll get a few more improved releases of T2 UHD and then start over on 8K. I'm sticking with Blu-ray until prices drop on 4K and versions of films are released that get better reviews.

Obviously the best Terminator movie? I don't know about that, the first is pretty epic as well.

Just got the 4k steelbook, which is what I was really waiting for. Pretty sure the disks are the same but the digital copy did redeem only the theatrical version in 4k

I wish they would have fixed the sound. I find it all over the place. Soft dialogue and music then you get pounded with a few bangs and pops hear and there then back down to soft everything. No real defining audio space with any left right or sound field placement given. The sound is almost making me not finish watching it cause I have to have the remote going up and down in volume non stop. The video looks great by the way.
