What you're hearing are the original samples used to create Stickerbush Symphony from Donkey Kong Country 2 Diddy's Kong Quest, combined with the music instruction data from the game, plus mixing and mastering magic for a perfect recreation of what a studio recording would have sounded like.

My father showed up to school during lunch in second grade one day, full army attire, grabbed my shoulder and said "We have to go." He freaked me out. I was literally thinking like "did Mom die or something?" he was so serious and walked with a purpose... When we got to the van i asked him what was going on. He pulled out DKC2 and said "i just wanted you to get a chance to play this before all your friends." Then i freaked out in a different way. To this day, i view DKC2 as a platforming masterpiece and it will forever hold a place in my heart.

@studentism
@studentism 4 жыл бұрын
yes, the technical work Wise had to do (on top of.. you know, the fucking compositions) in order to make this work within the limitations of the SNES is incredible. he emulated the Korg Wavestation process, manually recorded/imported individual samples, and sequenced them to make these seemingly long-lasting/evolving sounds. there are youtube videos/interviews that explain the whole process much better than i have. also, no offense to the person that recreated/posted this, but the recording off the original hardware sounds so much better.

I'm now 38 years old in the middle of my life. When I played this game, my father watched me doing that. He was always there by my side. Last year he died due to liver failure. Whenever I listen to this song, I feel the passage of time. I feel the weight of him being gone, away forever. I know that bringing back those old times isn't possible, but damn, I just can't stop crying. I've this picture of me on his shoulders as a young kid. He was the best. I just miss him so damn much.

36 year checkpoint: Married with two kids, clean and sober just over 3 years. Own a house, have a job I like and that I'm successful at. Put a switch controller in my almost 3 year olds hands for the first time last night and watched his eyes light up as he realized he was making the character move on screen. 5 years ago I didn't have a 10 minute plan, let alone 10 year, now I'm looking at what life's going to be like when my kids are graduating highschool and how I can prepare for those days.

Nostalgia is strange, you will have songs that will do the same to you as you get older. For me, the music always makes me think of cut grass.. and I am pretty sure it is because that was the chore my Dad made me do and I was stuck on this level and just wanted to keep trying so bad but I wasn't allowed to do that until I had mowed the lawn. I can still see that old CRT TV, the blue carpet of my bedroom, the red light on SNES as it sat paused...

Nothing's better than a good childhood memory. I used to play this game along with my dad's client's grandchildren when he was cutting her grass. After some years they gave me the broken console and the cartridges. Some years later I got a working console and I bought back the cartridges I've sold to a friend. My nostalgia was back!

This song always reminds me of my dad... I was just a kid and everything was so easy. Even to ignore some feelings. Now, years after both the happy days of my childhood and the passing of someone that was so important to me as my father was, I can see that our lives are so short and that only time can make us realize some important moments that otherwise in other moment would be just...normal. I miss my father and I miss the old times...

F* Society Thanks for the words of encouragement, society plays a huge role at trying to condition us to repress our inner child I suppose.. Nothing makes me more mad than hearing the phrase "grow up", as if that's what is expected out of all of us. Since my original comment I've worked on slowing down the pace of my life, even whooped out my old SNES from the attic and played this wonderful game again with my brother last week. Pausing each and every level to listen to the soundtracks and talking about our youth and what moments marked us the most. It felt great :)

This song makes me extremely sad. It doesn't need any lyrics to do that. It's essence is full of emotion and it takes me back in time, filling me with nostalgia and remembrance of better, simpler days, even though I never even touched a DK game. It's things as small as this piece of music that makes us feel alive and appreciate what we've been through. Growing older does suck, but it's part of what makes life beautiful. The fact that it's limited. This song is damn beautiful.
@ankucowboy

@@stefanoponce6090 Exactly, that's what I think when I listen to that melody, it's something inexplicable, although I did have a DKCountry on my old GameBoy Advance, I never had 2, but when I listen to this melody, I don't know why it makes me very melancholy in my childhood, Just as you say, they were happier and simpler days, when you played Zelda Ocarina on your N64, when you saw the start of Pokemon, when you discovered Resident Evil on PS1, when you waited for a new edition of "Club Nintento" magazine. all that is in the past, and it is summed up to this melody for me.

This music fits so well with the general thematic of that particular world: you cross this slimy, dark swamp while a music that itself feels stagnant plays in the background, then deep dive to explore the bowels of a long forgotten stranded ship looking for treasure, then the ship itself collapses and sinks into the swamplands while you climb the sails, and then - just then - you're rewarded with the beauty of Stickerbrush simphony and you can once again see the sunlight and sky in all its glory. Yes, there are thorns all around, but life is like that - and it's well worth it. It's like defeating depression through a deep introspection and seeing the beauty of meaning after a long struggle against the stagnation that threatened to swallow you. I love your work so much. Thank you for this.

I'm only 21. I grew up playing more retro games with my grandmother. She owned a dry cleaners within walking distance to my k-8 school. At her work, I would sit on an old musty couch in front of a tiny crt, and when work was slow she and I would play games like this until my mom picked me up. This never changed for as long as I could remember until high school. She has since passed, the cleaners now an abandoned building, and that tv and console decaying in a box somewhere. I'm now a struggling adult with mdd. I will cherish the memories of simple times forever. May my Mamaw rest in peace.

39 years old. The kid here still needs to hear this to know there is calm. I play this game and a few others to completion on at least a yearly basis.

Even though I didn't exist when this game was popular, this song still brings back childhood memories. :)

Another checkpoint of my life: started learning German, got my dream job and will move there Feb 2025. Life is good, we can do it. Thanks to everybody that helped me with kind words, and even for those with harsh ones deserve my gratitude. Stay strong, folks.

I hope it works out. It is hard to learn German. But in the end it will pay off and life will be better. My suggestion is to watch films you know very well in German with English subtitles. That way you hear it and understand the words better in context. Ignore the grammar for now :D

Almost three years had passed since my uncle departed to a better place, last year one of my grandparents also left his place among us; to be honest I'm a little bit afraid of what this year might have reserved for me, still, I'm glad I'm here enjoying this pretty little life of mine

This, and the spooky rollercoaster levels, are still my favorite levels when compared to any platformer out there these days. I sound like an old timer (and maybe I am at this point).

Donkey Kong Country was part of my life, during one of the most difficult moments of my childhood. My parents had separated and I suffered a lot because I was without my father and spent most of my time alone, since my mother was always away working. If I remember correctly, this was around 1995-1996, when I was not even 10 years old. This game was my refuge, where I could have something to occupy my mind and something to deal with my suffering at the same time. Forest Interlude, Mining Melancholy, Hot Head Bop, but mainly STICHERBRUSH SYNPHONY and AQUATIC AMBIENCE... Wow, just remembering how much I cried listening to these songs... it was a very difficult childhood, but I am very grateful for having had the opportunity to come into contact with this masterpiece.

Man I feel you. I remember playing one of these levels right before my mom took me to get a haircut. I remember the ironing board to the left and the light streaming through the window above it. She's gone now. This invokes so much nostalgia, I can't help but to well up when I hear it. Hug 🫂

The irony is that when my grandpa died, the only thing that I was able to grab to keep my life going was a stickerbush, symphony. I just can't describe how the music of this game makes me feel.

My mom managed, with effort and hard work, to buy a SNES for her yet unborn child when the hard times came and we didn't have money for cable, we would play the SNES as a family, both my parents and myself huddled arround an old TV enjoying gems such as dk2 and megaman X, this music brings such beautiful memories back
