I did an obstacle course for the first time this year. Spartan in Aug and Rugged Maniac in Sept. Finished both. Spartan was much harder than R.M. Felt like a bigger accomplishment too. I didn't know there would be that much of a difference. Your videos really gave me a preview of what to expect. Thanks!

Thank you! And yes, Terrain Race doesn't have the well polished mechanics behind it that Spartan does. Terrain is great for beginners, and is a really fun time, but there are some major differences in organization and obstacles between the two franchises.

Great work like always. Hey can you share your technique for the obstacle Tarzan? thank you
@OCRKings5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Ok, for Tarzan, I grabbed the first rope and pulled it as far back as I could. I tried to grab it at like face level. Then I took a running forward and picked my feet up off the ground. While swinging fwd I just grabbed the next rope and went hand to hand proceeding to the next one. As long as your feet are up, and you have forward momentum, you zip right thru. You can also hold both ropes, one in each hand, and do a little lean or swish backwards to generate momentum if you get stuck, and then bring the back hand forward to the lead hand once you get going. Best too to grab the ropes higher like head level and don't try to pinch or grasp them with your feet. Hope this helps!

I just signed up for this in Nashville in March and it will be my first every OCR. That said, is it safe to say wear a pair of tennis shoes that you are ok with completely ruining? I mean, are good shoes a necessity here, or just some that you can toss or make your official OCR shoes afterwards? Also, do you recommend pants or shorts?
@OCRKings4 жыл бұрын
First, good luck at your first OCR! Be safe, and have a great time. As far as shoes go, that's a tough one. Sure you can run in just about any shoe. We would recommend though a shoe that has good traction, especially when wet. One that has good grip in mud and dirt, and one that drains well. You don't want a shoe that is going to be slippery on the trail and on the obstacles and full of water if you are running a wet muddy course, or in the rain, or on a course that has dedicated water obstacles. Try out your shoes in wet conditions and you'll get a better sense on how they might perform. If you find they're a no go, there are several brands of OCR shoes out there such as La Sportiva and Altra. As far as shorts or pants, that's up to you and the temps in Nashville in March. Damer prefers shorts in hot weather, shorts over compression pants in colder weather. I wear Under Armor running compression pants no matter what (Heat Gear for warm, Cold Gear when cold). I don't like bare knees on the ground and I hate ticks (which we have a lot of in our area). Whatever you choose, choose something that is light weight, wicks moisture, and is not cotton. Cotton soaks up tons of water and sweat. Hope this helps somewhat!

Thanks for the video. I am planning to do it next year in NY. Does this require great strength? I am someone who runs 10 mins in thread mill at 4Mph and hikes around 8-10 miles in single stretch

Terrain Race requires a little bit of upper body strength when they include rope climbs. Other than that, if you run and hike, you should be fine!

@OCRKings4 жыл бұрын
Hopefully races will be on for May. Many races have been postponed or cancelled due to coronavirus. Check with Terrain Race at www.terrainrace.com if you're not sure. Otherwise, since you sound like you're in great shape, you'll be fine at the race! Climb ropes if you have access, do pullups if not. You'll kill it at Terrain Race. Until then, be safe, be well.

@@ericakromer630 agreed. It seems they had a lot of random hurdles here and there. I also thought it was funny how they advertised it being free but then after all the "fees" it turned out to be like 40 bucks a person.

What’s with the pushups past the multi-rig? The Terrain equivalent of Spartan burpee punishment? I’ve done a couple of Terrain races in Arizona, but there were no penalties. With Spartan, you really earn that medal! No ducking under the hurdles! But I like that Terrain is like a gateway drug into OCR.
@OCRKings5 жыл бұрын
Ha! Like the gateway drug analogy - perfect! And I have no idea what the pushups thing was about. No penalties at Terrain Race, but people were taking it upon themselves I guess to do pushups and burpees.

@raulrodriguez63675 жыл бұрын
Definitely a beginner race.
@lukehobbs31775 жыл бұрын
This one maybe, I did a terrain race 2 years ago... They had a 5k and a 10k option so being a beginner I went for the 5k. When I showed up they informed me that there was only one race and they had merged the 5K in the 10K into one 5 mile race. This might have been easy for some people but being 12 years old at the time it was very difficult, especially only have been training for a 5k.

The obstacles are much better than the one in Chicago last year. Do you know if all venues have the new obstacles or it will vary by venue? Chicago last year was a joke...even the festival area in your video is 10x better.
@OCRKings5 жыл бұрын
I think they change it up, venue to venue. I heard bad things about some of the spots they were at this year and last - obstacles missing or not constructed, disorganization, no supervision or safety people at the obstacles... That's too bad, they are a fun race. I hope they can get it together. With Warrior Dash gone, it makes us wonder if they will survive. Hope so.
