I think a strong option for this run could have been the charged blaster cannon from the Martian Saucer. Everyone forgot about it when they found out it can't be aimed, but that has since been changed. Unfortunately for the charged blaster cannon, most people choose to stick to their steadfast weapons than take a chance on a weapon they once dismissed as shit. It was actually what made the difference for me when I was doing OOA on Legendary because it has infinite pierce.

Charged blaster cannon got kinda shafted, because not only did it start out pretty bad, but even after making it arguably pretty good it still has to compete with weapons like the razor pine and razorblade typhoon, weapons that are so good you are basically throttling your DPS for choosing not to use them, so it was doomed from the start

@@thomasdevlin5825 The Razorblade typhoon is overrated, and I only use it pre-golem, after which the Nightglow is better. I also do not see the razorpine as *that* good, as i prefer the laser machini gun for it's extra range. Don't just stick to two weapons because you think they are 'the best' and are superior in every way, there are always going to be a better option for different situations. Also Betsy's wrath is just good, either for damage or for the debuff.

The worst offender of this is the Flintlock pistol. ESPECIALLY in singleplayer runs. Because if it is a solo mission, odds are the Arm's Dealer is there BECAUSE I have a gun that's likely better already than the Flintlock pistol. Fishing and duplicates in general for Muskets/Undertakers, Boomsticks, etc. also makes Flintlock pistols kinda outclassed in multiplayer as well since everyone has the option to get something better before the Arms Dealer is even there. Noooow, if it was sold by the Merchant for some crazy cost like 20 Gold, maaaybe.

the last ogre drop is brand of the inferno. its a somewhat underwhelming true melee but the parry is actually a cool mechanic its not really useful, you could just hit the enemy 5 times in the time it takes to parry but its fun

I believe the reason the flower of fire bounces on platforms and the flower pf frost does not, is because in a previous version neither of them did, but they made it to where the flower of fire bounced so it could be at least somewhat viable against the WOF, but they just never bothered changing the flower of frost or cursed flames.

The thing with Christmas Tree Sword is that it has somewhat of high skill ceiling. You have to stack its projectiles mid-air and then lead the boss under them when they start to fall. The barrage it unleashes is insane. But you have to use it completely opposite to Terra blade and other beam swords. Do not try hitting fast enemies with the star, aim at the direction the enemy WILL move, predict their movement and than your DPS will skyrocket.

13:10 bugger me, without an arena the nailheads are a very goofy enemy to encounter, since my laptop screen is kinda small even when zoomed out fully, the nails just end up sniping me from anywhere. As for the frost moon event, ice queen is just as miserable to me as pumpking for the same reason nailhead snipes me, my screen is too small to effectively easily see projectiles or pumpking trying to crash into me like a demonic bumper car with his wobbly arms, or even ice queen just deciding to slow me down because why not?

Tome of Infinite Wisdom is actually really great. Glaive was awesome for the point in the game I was using it. Octopod I've never been able to make use of, but the phantom phoenix isn't too bad.

I think weapons become obscure when they fit into a square hole while the square piece already exists and the square piece is usually easier to get, on par or even better in dps, and have ease of use or even a passable learning curve with a scaling ceiling. Poison knives are cumbersome to obtain, thunder zapper is somewhat difficult to obtain but passable in damage for it's intended use which is a single target long range dps weapon. The Merchant sells shuriken. Pew matic's average dps is affected by it's worst projectiles. Ham Bat is neat. Your aim is amazing. Blood Thorne is pretty cool, 10/10 would farm again.

I think I have an idea for the throwing waters, they can have shrapnel like the molotovs, and apply various debuffs depending on the type of water. Corrupt water could give a poison debuff to enemies, since it feels natural for a "disease-like" corruption to behave like poison compared to the alternative of "green flames that won't get extinguished underwater" Crimson water could give a slight defense debuff, similar to ichor, allowing you to synergize it with other weapons or players. I'm not entirely sure what holy water can do, since the hallow's gimmick is crystal bullets which shatter into bits of shrapnel, which every throwing water does. Maybe it can deal extra damage to corrupt / "unholy" enemies like eater of souls, face monsters, and demons. It could also simply just deal more piercing damage with the shrapnel.

The flower of frost and cursed flames if you switch between em in a full mage loadout are devastating, I've been saying it for years! The flower of frost is one of the easiest hardmode mage weapons you can get early on and in terms of DPS completely outclasses the crystal serpent. I've found the flower of frost in a good loadout is usable until just about post plantera. It bounces more times then the flower of fire, doesn't get stoped by plattforms, doesn't go out under water, shoots faster than the cursed flames, and does more damage, the icing on the cake of course is the frostburn and if you combine that with cursed inferno and have like ONE imp minion for fire or even use a flameburst rod, the amount of passive damage you can do just spamming this thing is just nuts. It also shreds skeletron primes hands because they are not immune to fire debuffs.

For Pew-matic Horn, people say it's bad because 1) Deerclops progression position is kinda weird with some people putting him post-Skeletron and if you do him there Phoenix Blaster is better but you could have done Deerclops way earlier... and 2) it got buffed hard. Used to be Undertaker with 4 more damage for a nice boost, but it got a 1.6x speed boost to make it shoot as fast as Handgun on top of a slight damage buff. Still doesn't do as much damage though. For Clubberfish, i personally hate it because at high fishing power it has the same odds of coming up as Ebonkoi but doesn't stack. So much inventory clutter...

deerclops' progression position isn't really weird at all, it's pre-skeletron. There's not really any situation I think it can be argued otherwise. The drops are godawful post-skeletron. It's like comparing the bee's knees to the hellwing bow, of course hellwing is better. anyone who puts deerclops as post-skeletron has a poor understanding of prehardmode progression. It'd be like putting queen bee post-skeletron.

That's the thing, though, he should be considered pre-Skeletron but a lot of people don't. Boss checklist puts him post-Skeletron, iirc there was some Speedrun-related source that put Deerclops post-Skeletron, Haboo mentioned players fighting Queen Bee/Deerclops post-Skeletron in his GFB hardcore run, and apparently the post-Skeletron take is so common that people meme it in the official server. Even the wiki says "Deerclops's strength may warrant waiting until the player has defeated Skeletron to fight it." And yeah, it really doesn't make sense, I'd imagine people look at his high HP alone and place him post-Skeletron with no further look at the actual fight. I even saw one person claim he should be a hardmode boss... The result is that people fight him at a point well after he's balanced for, at a time where his drops stop mattering. Edit: the speedrun thing is that the all prehardmode bosses set order category places evil boss -> Queen Bee -> Skeletron -> Deerclops. Not sure why.

I'll be honest, anyone who genuinely think deerclops is meant to be a post-skeletron boss is uninformed or an idiot. The speedrun order is probably like that because deerclops is annoying and they want to justify fighting it as late as possible to kill it as quickly as possible. I fight deerclops and queen bee after skeletron sometimes. That doesn't mean I think they're a post-skeletron boss. Terraria, especially in prehardmode, isn't a strictly linear game and players can avoid fighting bosses, but I can't imagine anyone seriously saying Deerclops is intended to be fought post-skeletron, only that they choose to fight it post skeletron. @@kellamyoshikage286

I actually did a Sword only run recently, and I was incredibly surprised by how good the Christmas Tree Sword was. It was a really solid midrange weapon. Definitely better than the influx waver, and had its use cases even with the terrablade in hand. I dont know when it got reworked, but I haven't ever used it since the old version that shot those terrible bobbles.

Holy Water, Unholy Water, and Blood Water should all be reworked into special grenade type weapons, rather than spreading purity, corruption and crimson respectively, they can deal an AOE attack where they land that does extra damage against certain enemy times: Holy deals more to undead, corrupt, crimson, and hellish enemies, while Unholy and Blood deal more damage to pure (think anything that isn't corrupt or undead or crimtane, stuff liks slimes, goblins, bats, etc) and holy enemies

The ghastly glaive is actually quite good. Its projectiles have infinite piercing so against the destroyer it can deal a lot of damage and prejctiles spawn when hitting target dummies but will home onto nearby enemies so the it can also make for a decent and easy to make semi-afk farm.

The problem with the ice flower is that it gets completely outmatched by the cursed flame book in corrupt worlds which is basically the same thing but with the cursed flame effect, faster use time, lower mana cost, and better projectile bounce/velocity with only 5 less base damage.

@@notmetagamingjust a heads up, when you do the Christmas moon event (or if you ever do, it’s kinda optional iirc) the elf melter’s I think a direct upgrade to it dropped by either the ice queen or the (annoying) Santa Nk1 boss. Of course this is only if you want to do it. Also the flamethrower, elf melter, and the heat ray golem drops all have backpacks that appear when they’re selected in your hotbar, but I agree it’s a fun weapon to use. Hope you have a fun run

@@notmetagaming flamethrower is actually a very good weapon since its buff in 1.4.4. It's probably the best ranged weapon to fight plantera with, since it has piercing, very high dps, and short range isn't too big of an issue in that fight. Only downside of the flamethrower is that it can be difficult to get large quantities of gel without a slime statue farm, so if you don't have a lot of gel it's best to save it for boss fights.

In my last expert playthrough with a friend I actually really loved the christmas tree sword for whenever i could true melee. If you can get the sword and like two or three projectiles to land it just absolutely melts stuff; it certainly wasn't competing with the terra blade i'll admit, but i think it made decent competition for the horseman's blade as a swapout.

The ooa is really is easy. All you gotta do is put most of the sentries on one portal and defend the other side yourself, occasionally putting a sentry down near the gem to combat flying enemies. When betsy spawns less enemies spawn so that set up can handle defending the gem without you

I think the reason why the poison throwing knives seem good, is really just because they're more of a crowd control weapon. Fixed DPS DoT is effectively just being able to keep dealing damage without having to keep attacking the same enemy, though with not much of a benefit to continuing to attack the same weapon. So, naturally, just attacking a bunch of different enemies at a time - like during a Goblin Invasion - makes them seem quite good, as that 6 DPS is multiplied by a lot. That said, you typically don't really get situations where you see that many enemies often. So, really, in most cases, 6 DPS really isn't much more than 6 DPS. Pretty decent for EoW though, and I still think they're worth carrying around.

i'm surprised the flower of fire was here, i was doing my first playthrough recently and wanted to do mage so i looked at damage values on the fandom wiki and saw it was the highest pre-hardmore damage so i just went with it and thought it was amazing. granted i was on classic and not experienced, but against bosses you're basically trading piercing and convenience for raw dps, and outside of bosses you can trivialise most enemies by spamming it since it bounces. even in early hardmode it was still easily strong enough to farm for my next weapon (i farmed for the cursed flames in the corruption)

The Candy Corn Rifle is great for crowds, like oh so many weapons from that progression stage. Its projectiles have good piercing and bounce off blocks. This was honestly my first time seeing the Jack 'O Lantern launcher at work though, I've always completely ignored it. The pew-matic horn is considered crap mostly because it's a Deerclops drop that's outclassed by a Minishark. Granted, Minishark is S-tier in pre-hardmode, but by the point you're fighting Deerclops you probably already have one. It's also outclassed by the Bee's Knees and probably some others, like the shotguns. For me an unknown weapon that turned out to be amazing was the Dart Rifle. I've always ignored mimic dart weapons just like the Blowgun, so seeing the rifle reach 2k DPS pre-mech when shooting crystal darts at multiple enemies was a wow moment. I only learned later that it's considered great.

Pewmatic horn is easily better than the minishark in terms of damage, it's not outclassed by it at all. The pewmatic horn was genuinely very good - killing a master mode skeletron in a little over 2 minutes is very impressive. That's around 110-120 dps, and I didn't even have a very good reforge or good ammo. I don't think it's quite at the level of the molten fury, which is ranger's best option, but it's really powerful. The candy corn rifle honestly isn't even very good for crowds, it only hits 3 times. At that stage, you could get the stake launcher, which hits 10 times, or the eventide, which hits 5 times with 5 projectiles. The elf melter performed pretty similarly and didn't have abysmal projectiles to deal with. Problem with the candy corn rifle is it does everything to a mediocre standard and fails to do anything well while also having one of the worst projectiles in the game.

@@sorbetcafe oh I wasn't aware the rifle was that bad, nvmd then. As for the horn I remember seeing a comparison video that demonstrated it having worse DPS than minishark, if your mileage varies it might be due to the master mode higher armour effect being more harsh on lower per-hit damage weapons.

enemy armor effectiveness does not change with difficulty, only player armor effectiveness does. What's more likely is it used the pew-matic horn before it was buffed in 1.4.3.whatever @@DeuxisWasTaken

I find the laser machine gun to be useful as a secondary weapon when you're not a mage. but the only reason you would use it is for out ranging your primary weapon, which it just can't because of the spread

Maybe Im not that knowledgeable on the game, but when I was playing mage I accidentally got a blood thorn, and may I say it was best accident I had, it carried me all the way to plantera dungeon until I got something more stable to use. It had terrific damage and an AOE *and* shoots where your cursor exactly at, at the same time, only downside being it required ground but platforms work too.

@@sorbetcafe Tome of Infinite Wisdom goes surprisingly hard and the Ghastly Glaive is a surprisingly good true melee. Phantom Phoenix also pairs well with the oiled effect of the Huntress armour's mines and if the player doesn't feel like doing Tier 3 when it becomes available, and only wants one trap and one armour, redoing it a few times in prep ain't that big a deal.

I've found the christmas tree sword to be like, really good against large targets with really predictable movement. Duke Fishron specifically gets absolutely dumpstered by it.

@@sorbetcafe That's not the only example though. Betsy and a lot of the post-plantera moon event minibosses are also great use cases. Also, because of Fishron wings, there's good reason you'd want to farm Duke with the CTS just because of how painless it makes it.

Honestly i admit, i kinda like the ray gun golem drops, yeah it may not be the best weapon, even for a mage build. But outside of the backpack that comes with it, and the fact that its damage isn’t terribly bad (imho), along with the fact it managed to help me kill the empress… i like it

People really be sleeping on the DD2 weapons. Not only are they somewhat unique, their gimmicks are actually quite powerful. Not to mention how good the Knight armors are for the Summoner. Now that whips have been introduced, i wouldn't mind if the melee bonuses were turned into whip bonuses.
