I've owned the M1 Pro with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage for a year and as a video editor, I can't believe how good these chips are. I just got done editing 4K BRAW footage in Final Cut and coloring in Davinci Resolve and it was blazing fast. I can see the benefits from the Max line of chips, but for what I do on a regular basis, the M1 Pro does it all. If you're an editor you're probably using proxies anyways, but this thing can handle BRAW without any issue. Exporting a ProRes 422 4K 10 minute-long fully colorized with a ton of nodes from Resolve took like 20 minutes. The fans didn't even start up. My only regret is I should've gotten the 32 GB of RAM!

32 GB ram upgrade is insanely expensive though, I was considering whether I should upgrade to 1TB SSD or 32 GB ram as I'm a music producer and I work with huge projects but the 32 GB ram is insanely insanely overpriced. if the 32 gb ram upgrade was priced similarly to 1tb SSD I would've gone for the ram upgrade as for the storage you can always use external, but no choice when it comes to ram.

I really felt bad because of those youtubers who make their videos just to check the mark in their schedule. Everybody was saying "i bought the basic config and this mac is amazing" but no one has ever said that to make some staff like video editing, or photoshop, or some work with 3d, or even programming but using something like Docker, running heavy applications you need to have more than 16 gigs of UNIFIED memory(that is a key really) and at least 1tb for ssd

I’m a tech enthusiast. I used the M1 Pro MBP 14” for a year. I wasn’t happy with the sharp corners. While typing, it would dig into my wrist & it became a really big problem for me, so I moved to the M2 Air. I’ve been really happy. The display difference didnt bother me at all. 120Hz isn’t really a big thing in laptops I feel. All I miss are the speakers. I love the Air’s thinness and the lightness and also the battery!

@@ionutmititelu2083 the main reason why I moved back to the Air (M2 in my case) was because I really didn’t like the bulk of the 14” pro. Even the battery life of the M2 Air is better than the 14”. I was at the same spot the past months. I got the 16" M1 Pro MBP in early 2022. In January of this year, I started to get back into programming, and it was nagging at me. I saw them in the refurbished store and this weekend I had a friend tell me he wanted to purchase a 16" MacBook Pro but did not have the money to spent CAD $3200, and so we started talking about mine. I write mine off in about 24 - 28 months so that I have some to spare in the run-up to the third full year. It made sense to sell him mine. Sold it to him, and he picked it up today. I turned around and ordered the 14" MAX 32Gb, as in the refurbished store we don't get to specify the upgrades as in the normal store. I need the 32Gb, the rest if gravy. For a brief moment I considered the 15" and even looked at the 16" again, but the refurbished store just did not have the right systems. I paid for rush shipping, and it could be here as early as tomorrow.

My only gripe is I usually don’t connect to an external display and was wondering if 14 inches is big enough because I really don’t want to spend so much money on the 16 inch pro. Apple really needs to release an affordable external monitor that doesn’t cost $1500.

Why would you spend $400 on an upgrade that will give you marginally better results? By the time 16GB is not enough, it will be time to buy a new Macbook and 32GB will be the standard of the lowest model and you'll have an extra $400 in your pocket that can go towards your new Macbook. It's honestly an upgrade that makes no sense for most people.

Now that you've had the 15" MBA for two weeks, do you feel any differently about the 14" MBP? In that new video, you sound really excited about the 15" MBA. Of course, there's a very specific audience for whom the power of the MBP is quite important, and they are probably most of the folks watching this very thoughtfully done and informative video. But then there's another category of folks, who don't really need the power of the MBP but do need 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD and want a screen bigger than 13". Configured like this, the 15" MBA is $1700, just $300 less than base model 14" MBP which has the same amount of RAM and SSD. The real-world price gap is usually smaller, because the base 14" is often available for $1750 or thereabouts. Judging by this video and your just-released 2-week 15" MBA video, it's hard to tell which Macbook you're more excited about, or which you think would be better for someone in this category. Honestly Tarren, I highly doubt the RAM bottlenecked you in anyway based on how you claim to use it and it really is just your perception of using a laptop that has a better CPU that you noticed any boost in performance. There are very few cases where more RAM makes any difference in speed as shown by tests done various KZbinrs online. Even if you open a million chrome tabs, have videos playing in the background, exporting multiple files in lightroom, it makes no difference to the speed. There are only very specific use cases where it does make a difference and yours is not one of them.

love the video ❤❤ i have a very important question tho where is the laptop case sleeve thing from bc i need one
Just grabbed mine 3 weeks ago. But 512 Gb.. and I already know that current speed on SSD twice slower than 1 Tb version.. is it really problem with video editing 4k ? And DAW`s like Ableton ?

Great video! You convinced me to get it after debating between the Pro and M2 Air. I wanted to ask what sleeve/stand are you using for the laptop in the video?

Thanks for video! What case do you use? Could you share the link or manufacturer?
Still has mid2012 MacBook Pro. Has some issues here and there but works like a charm. Planning to upgrade MacBook Pro 14inch m2 will it maintain its elder brother legacy ?? Please suggest me

Great video. You spoke a lot about content creation. What about people who have an office job and use power point, excel and outlook for a living, is this computer overkill???

Yes it is an overkill.. for you, a good Lenovo Legion 5 series laptop for 800 dollars will be more than enough..

I would be interested in an honest comparison of SSD file transfer speeds, and from external TB4

How is the matte finish on the keys holding up? My 2021 14" is already more worn than my 2015 15" Retina. Both are daily drivers and I write code so I do type a lot... Just wondering if it's certain models or they improved the keys on the M2 models... #imadeit

I've got a spec'd out 16.2" M1 Max with 64 GB RAM but opted 512gb SSD coz I have like a bazzilion 1-2TB external SSD's for all my video editing off of them. Never really use more than 200GB on my internal SSD.. Although I see myself getting a 1 or 2 TB ssd next time I upgrade, in like 4 years minimum.

great vid!! could you share a link to that portfolio/carrying case you showed? looked comfortable to use on your lap!
I found the NEW base M2 pro for €200 more than the refurbished m1 pro 8-core and the same price of 10-core (a bargain!). I was coming from an intel 2017, so I had to choose between m1 pro and m2 pro. I was initially influenced by the various negative reviews, then I realized that which made no sense to me. The slower SSD compared to the previous model is not a tragedy, both because it is still very fast and responsive, and because the faster speed of the previous model would ONLY be noticed if you transferring a very huge amounts of data to an external SSD (or from an external SSD) that is faster than the internal SSD... which NEVER happens! On the other hand, performances has definitely improved. I did a final cut export test using m1 pro 14" 10 core and m2 14" 10 core. One hour and 36 minutes of video, 4K prores: masks and various effects applied (filmconvert, luts...). Export completed about 40 minutes with m1 pro (very good result) and 26 minutes with m2 pro (amazing result)! Honestly, I don't know why this huge difference, but this was the result (maybe they improved the performance of the m2 chip even more with the updates?). For me nothing else is needed. The rest is just the bulls**t.

What specs do you recommend for intense 3d rendering, simulation and CAD with the 14"?

I think the mistake was that you were using your MacBook as a workstation most of the time it seems. If you didn't know that, then you made the right choice with the M1 Pro spec. If you knew that you would use the M1 Pro as mostly a workstation, then you definitely should have spec'd higher. Or even get a Mac Studio.
