One of main issues disregarded: C-130 is holding the whole weight of embraer through cables, that are connected to C-130 somewhere near tail. That wold shift C-130-s center of mass to the back, far behind the wings and C-130 would instantly become aerodynamically unstable. Then in a second - uncontrolled nose up and stall. Then crash.
@willschultz54525 жыл бұрын
The C-130 is made to carry a lot of heavy equipment. in comparison that little plane is probably like a feather to it so I doubt it would have any effect on the stability of that big C-130, if it did it probably wouldn't be much, the Embraer 110 I believe weighs less than 20,000 pounds so that would be nothing to the C-130
@garyb41495 жыл бұрын
@@willschultz5452 To put 20,000 pounds at the very back of a C-130 would definitely put the aircraft center-of-gravity to far aft to continue flying. A C-130's max load for cargo is 45,000 lbs (for the older ones) and I think 60,000 lbs for the newer ones. So to put 1/2 to 1/3 of the max weight at the rear of the plane would be instant loss of flight. The CG of the entire aircraft has to be maintained within 24 inches of the center of the wing to keep flying. I used to be a loadmaster flying USMC C-130s.
@revmatch26485 жыл бұрын
What if they had a rolling ballast weight inside to shift the weight as needed between having the hooked aircraft and the cruise over with out it?! :) haha just some ideas
@gpaull25 жыл бұрын
There have been C130 crashes caused by cargo getting hung up aft of the CG when pushing cargo out the back while in flight. In this case you’re adding the drag as well as the weight.
@Tuberuser1875 жыл бұрын
I think a military pilots perspective on this would be more valid in some respects, C-130s are designed for shifting loads as they drop cargo in flight. Either at very low level or at higher altitudes, literally weights of up to 15,000KG/34,000lb shifting from the centre (where the wings are) too the rear and straight through the hatch. Thats a massive and rapid shift of the centre of gravity, when its done just a few meters above the ground there is no room for error so their must be a way of compensating for it, perhaps thats why the flaps where deployed or they pump fuel around in preparation. Automated anti stall systems might also play a factor, again the flaps might be key as they are deployed for lift with the aircraft trimmed hard nose down.

Awesome video! I too am a pilot, and I love the dark knight series, so this video was epic! Just a few things I noticed/corrections for you: 1. - The interior is that of an Embraer EMB 120, not a 110, so it’s actually a slightly larger, taller and wider cabin version than the 110. And proof they used the EMB 120 to film the interior and a EMB 110 for the exterior shots. 2 . - While it was shot in Scotland, the scene takes place in Africa, so the South African registration makes a lot of sense. Nice catch, it’s nice to know other people also catch those things in movies, haha. 3. - The Scene with the L-100 (Aka C-130) actually makes sense. The Embraer is Flying a lot lower than cruising altitude, likely because the CIA guy asked them to fly a lower altitude and slower speed so they could open the doors without too much cabin turbulence. At such a speed, it would make sense for a Hercules to deploy its flaps in order to maintain a slower speed and level attitude.

My cousin worked on this film, both planes were leased by the movie maker. The 110 was actually in Scotland but was in fact from South Africa, because the company these planes were leased from is home based there. The company does have offices in several nations so their planes can be registered in many countries. The Studio had to carry insurance for damage on both planes additionally to the insurance the leasing company has. If you notice during the scenes when you can see the 110 now wingless and hanging, there is no ground speed under them. The 110 is just hanging at a slight angle to make it appear as if there is speed, but notice the cables are creating the angle not wind speed. This because the stunt was done using a Helicopter suspension that was stationary. It's also why they never show an angle with the men on the 110 and the C130. Hats off to them for not using CG, all these scenes were actually at a decent altitude it's also the reason it was not just filmed over say Colorado. In the United States it is almost impossible for permits to obtained for extreme stunts like this, especially when airplanes are used.

On the C-130 there is a speed limit of 150 KIAS with cargo door open and ramp down (which it is in the shot I saw). And you can have about 70% flaps to maintain stability. If the ramp was up and locked then you can do 185 KIAS. So at those speeds the Embraer can run away from the C-130. One other small detail, when the guy shoots the pistol I didn't see a shell casing being extracted or slide moving.

I think there is a few things that he pointed out here that aren't correct. The Embraer was also flying with its FLAPS down when they opened the door, so it does make sense that the much bigger and heavier C130 with a higher stall speed also has its FLAPS retracted even-though it's catching up to the Embraer, The whole reason why the blew the tail off was to get Bane and Dr. Pavel on a rope and then disconnect the embraer from the C130 and have bane and Dr.Pavel escape easily and dramatically. By having the tail open, it was also easier to get the body bag in and 2 men with guns, vs having to go through the tight door 1 by 1 and shooting the CIA officers. So I think some points that were pointed our are true, others are very debatable. Great scene no matter what! ;)
@kendog523615 жыл бұрын
Also, I'm not sure the team knew that door opened inward. They had to get everything set up, ahead of time, so they may not have know whether the Agency Plane door opened inward or outward, so blowing the rear removes that potential issue, entirely.

@David Roberts While it's been 3 months since I wrote the above, I think I was referring more to the idea that the "bad guys" didn't know ahead of time exactly which plane would be chosen. Doing some back of the envelope maths, the wings ripped off the plane 82 seconds before the plane was dropped, assuming they're flying at a pedestrian 160 kts (about 300 km/h) thanks to dragging another plane behind, then they would have covered 7km in that time. As for the wings sheering off, that one's pretty legit. The wings are designed to take a strong headwind much faster than the planes top speed, as well as a strong force pushing up on the wings. If you were to put a plane vertically into a wind tunnel so that there is a 100+ knot wind pushing down on the wings they would likely sheer off due to the insane forces working in the opposite direction of the design of the wings. That does, however, mean that the horizontal stabilizers wouldn't sheer off as fast as the main wings. Also, there are 2 reasons why they blew the tail off instead of opening the doors: 1, it's more cinematic; 2, so Bane could hook himself onto the rope and drop the plane instead of climbing out the door.
@A.Lifecraft4 жыл бұрын
The fuselage would have to be mounted in a way to contribute opposing forces. Otherwise you would need pyrotechnics to have the wings separate like that without the whole thing flapping heavily in the stream of air first. Even if or especially if you film all of that in real, you will make sure those parts separate right on time and symmetrically, so as not to have an uncontrolled situation where you kill your stuntmen.

I don't think the plane would have been pressurized at such a low altitude anyway, looks like they are only at a few thousand feet AGL As for the wings tearing off, generally speaking, as you already know, aircraft wings are very strong when subject to positive G's, but they are pretty fragile when it comes to negative G's, the 747 for example, has been known to survive a sustained 6G when pulling out of a dive, but it's only rated for 1 negative G, in the scene, the sudden pitch down and negative AOA would put immense negative loading on the wing structure, so the wings breaking off in that scene is plausible, but, as you said, they probably wouldn't break off cleanly, and it's likely that you wouldn't lose both both them, after that it would fling around like an out of control kite, and that's not acounting for the probability that the C130 would be pulled off course and likely be damaged due to the airframe stresses associated with capturing an aircraft in flight (tow plane pilots know all about that problem with rookie glider pilots who haven't yet mastered the art of being towed) And here in Australia, we use VH as the prefix for our aircraft tail numbers

On one hand,when I saw this sequence for the first time,I was impressed how original it was.Visually it was impressive and there certainly was an element of danger. It obviously took a lot of planning and it works. One the other hand,there are flaws. Anyone investigating this "accident " would find he wings at one point,the tail at another and eventually the forward section at another. The bodies in the plane have 9mm bullets in them. Banes boots would leave footprints on the seats,not the floor. And then the cockpit flight recorder would have recorded the data. Conclusion: Not an accident.

first of all, I'm an aerospace engineering student so I have some leverage when it comes to this stuff. The first comments he makes about the aircraft are almost all wrong. The first thing being the shape of the fuselage. If you look at the aircraft, it has a square shaped fuselage meaning a few things. First of all, it's not pressurised because a pressurised cabin can't hold a square shape. Secondly, because of the shape of the fuselage, it's not unlikely that they would actually be able to stand up. The second thing about the flaps of the C-130 is kinda correct but not entirely. Altho from an airline pilot's point of view, flaps are for flying slow, from a wing point of view, flaps drastically increase lift but also drastically increase drag. So it depends on the situation. while yes, you aren't going to fly cruise speed with flaps out, they are about to carry an entire aircraft so it might just be to prevent a stall in that case. The next scene where they attach cables to the aircraft is one that actually worries me. while yes, a plane is a relatively strong structure, the skin is less than a mm thick. So for that to work they would have to attach it right onto the frame of the aircraft which would be quite hard to see from the outside. The last thing he got completely wrong is the thing about the wings. Conventional aircraft wings are usually designed for loads up to 3G with a safety factor allowing for loads up to 9G. So what does that mean? this means that the weight the wings can carry before the wings snap is 9 times the weight of the aircraft in normal conditions. Looking at the footage, they are flying at an angle of attack of -90°. I can almost certainly guarantee you that for a conventional transport aircraft flying at cruise speed at an angle of attack of -90°, the wings would snap like a toothpick. Altho it is true that there is fuel in them and we didn't see any of that.
@LowieDM4 жыл бұрын
@Paul Simonson As I said, I'm a student. I don't know everything and I am well aware of that fact. To answer your question: yes, I have flown an aircraft. I currently have exactly 100 flights of which 29 were solo flights. I might not be the best pilot in the world but I wouldn't have a single solo flight if I didn't know how an airplane works. Those wings falling off do in fact look very fake. I don't know exactly how those wings are built so I don't know how they would fail in reality. That's why I didn't comment on that. And to a lot of people's great surprise, a lot of aircraft (like for example the piper cub) are still almost literally made entirely out of paper and sticks.

Technically speaking, an aircraft wing must be able to carry it's own mass, the mass of the aircraft and the mass of the cargo, as well as the pull of the engines + wind resistance and potential turbulence. Therefore, it's most unlikely that it will disintegrate if only put in to a wrong orientation towards the winds at regular speed, as the construction must be able to withstand a flat stall, or a storm, or both. It's much more likely that the cables would snap, or that the construction cables are anchored to would fail due to structural damage from the anchors rammed in to it. Also, the airplanes at that time will be going over 200 km/h. If you can grab the side of the aircraft at that speed while dangling off a rope, or even stabilize yourself enough to shoot through the windows of the aircraft, you're superman with no need for rope or an aircraft.

I could see the flaps deployed for extra lift, since they are literally lifting another plane. Also blowing the tail off is for ease of access. If you went through the doors the harnessing cable would get caught.
@yvrelna5 жыл бұрын
When you deploy flaps you get some lift momentarily, yes, but you also add drag and this reduce speed. With less speed, you will get less lift.
@macieksoft5 жыл бұрын
Consider that they are dragging another aircraft with flaps extended, that would not make any sense. Flaps would add even more drag to the already insanely draggy thing. And as you fly slower, you would also loose stability. So you would have tons of drag + lack of stability, it is exactly opposite to what would you want in such situation.
@Peter_Cordes3 жыл бұрын
@@macieksoft The way they're dragging the smaller plane is already probably *very* high drag, drag which increases significantly as a function of airspeed due to the shape. So it might not be possible to go fast enough for the C130's wings to get good lift in clean configuration, given available engine thrust / power. It seems plausible to me that having the flaps down could help more than it hurts in this configuration, but I don't have numbers for C130 thrust vs. airspeed or C130 drag vs. airspeed (without towing a kite). (update: I commented before finishing the video. I forgot the wings tore off like a toy model. Seemed totally unrealistic to me, too. Just the bare fuselage is a lot less drag than I was thinking, so yeah probably you wouldn't want that much flaps, if any, if the small plane's wings did rip off, lol.)

There's also a question about if two fuselage ribs of the Embraer are stronger than both entire wings. Seems doubtful and more likely that the cables would simply tear out chunks of fuselage when the Embraer tipped forward. But lets assume the fuselage ribs are strong enough. Then we have metal pins being fired against these extremely tough fuselage ribs versus the grip the men have on the devices. And the mens' grip is by far the weaker of these. The devices would immediately launch themselves backwards out of the mens' hands. xD

Considering this number and, if you look closely, you might notice that EMB has flaps (first notch, from what it looks @ 4:32) deployed as well, therefore we can expect speed to be somewhere in the range of 140-150. Based in this, I come to a conclusion that C130 flap setting of 50% is reasonable.
