I love seeing these types of videos, where whips are compared and contrasted with ones made easier and later in a maker’s career. It also makes me want to buy more whips.

The middle three bullwhips in this video were all bought in 2011 from Western Stage Props. I think the other ones are from 2000-2005.

If you’re looking for a higher end kangaroo hide whips Midwestwhips and DelCarpio whips are fantastic, though the waiting times are a little longer, TrinityWhipCompany is another really great popular one, and I think those ship a lot faster

When do you know a whip is too worn out to use adam?
@Adam-Winrich3 жыл бұрын
If it’s leather, when the leather cracks or breaks with little effort. With nylon, usually it can have a new point added several times.

Thanks for talking about the belly, though you didn't mention if they were plaited or not? I don't know if you were aware of this, but a few years back there was a lot of discussion (read accusations) from some Europeans regarding the fact that if a maker says his whips are kangaroo that they should be 100% kangaroo, and I found this whole back and forth rather silly because I knew the scoop on Terry's whips... Well wouldn't you know it, the SECOND Terry join a certain blogger's group, he was welcomed with open arms and such discussions were never had again, or at least, not around him lolll!!!! If only people knew!
@Adam-Winrich3 жыл бұрын
I am pretty sure Terry plaited his belly. Some whip makers use 100% kangaroo leather in their kangaroo whips, some don’t. There were also some heavy debates about using electrical tape in nylon whips.
@hiroprotagonist5253 жыл бұрын
@@Adam-Winrich Ya I think the e-tape is what launched this "witch hunt" some people were on a few years ago... Granted if someone is talking about a whip that is made up of the lowest crap materials possible, that is not the same as those who use cow for bolsters, and yet they were all virtue-signalling and demanded all whipmakers who use the words "kangaroo leather whip" have a disclaimer stating only the bellies and overlay are roo, which was a bit much. My point was that this sort of demand on pain of being branded a scammer whipmaker by self-appointed authorities, was only really made possible because they didn't realize Jacka made his internals using cow leather, chrome split at that! I'm pretty sure if they'd known, they would have been more careful about making people's lives unduly difficult just to satisfy their need for control. That being said, he couldn't have been able to pull very tightly on those bellies if he was using chrome splits...
@Adam-Winrich3 жыл бұрын
@@hiroprotagonist525 I believe the point of the split chrome guts in Terry’s whips wasn’t for stiffness, but because it held more grease than other leathers. What does bug me about Terry’s whips is that so many of his whips have splices due to broken strands in the first foot or two after the handle. Most whip makers who use the stretchy/weaker parts of the kangaroo hide on the inside of the whip don’t have this problem. But, Terry learned from guys that did this seriously for a living, and the standards are different than those of someone deeply in love with whip making and who aren’t vitally concerned about the bottom line.
@hiroprotagonist5253 жыл бұрын
@@Adam-Winrich So he used the onion method and not the typical method of using the legs for yokes and cutting the bellies from the outside of the hide so the point of the overlay gets cut from the middle of the back...
@Adam-Winrich3 жыл бұрын
@@hiroprotagonist525 no, he cut his whips using a yoke. I think he started the yoke at one leg, cut across the tail section which put firm leather in the handle, and continued cutting around the other leg, which put this stretchy leather in the thick part of the whip where it wouldn’t get much stress, and his points did get cut out of the middle of the hide, so his points are strong.
