The band performs at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo during their June, 1972 Japan/Australia Tour. This is a restored version of the video, with a clearer view of Terry's incredible fretwork during, "A Song For Richard and His Friends" and the only video we have of the trippy, "Fancy Colours". With Terry on his Les Paul Professional and Stratocaster, we see the force and power of Chicago with Terry Kath.

Terry Kath was a BADASS on the guitar, its a shame he's not ranked amongst the 100 all-time greats, when you get a complement from someone like Jimi Hendrix, you know where you belong, Terry Kath was one of rock's greatest guitarists who never got his due during his lifetime.

You guys are just old farts & fossils... 😉👍🏻 And... I'm proud to be one of you! I'm 55 and when I was 7 or 8 , I discovered the Great Chicago. That Christmas my folks got me the CTA double album and an older (non-working) Garrard turntable. I had spent the year building a Heathkit amplifier (mono!) and had dug up an old pair of speakers that functioned but needed some loving care to restore the damaged wood cabinets. Their goal (& mine 😎) was to repair the turntable and get down to the fun part... Listening! It took me just a week or two. Nowadays there is "Autotune" which makes everything and everyone --> THE SAME! Oh well, A great trip down memory lane. Btw: As a teen, hearing of Terry Kath's death, I became fervently anti-gun. I was living in NJ, so that was the norm anyway. Thank God, I grew up and discovered the CONSTITUTION! I became a cop and volunteer firefighter/emt and am now an NRA firearms safety instructor. Lesson -- DRUGS & GUNS DON'T MIX! Rip Mr. Kath. Thanks for the memories and outstanding music.

You know what blows my mind about Terry Kath? On the song "Beginnings," This guy, Terry likely says, to himself, this song is so F-ing great, I don't need to overplay on it. That was what blew my mind about early Chicago. Kath could have been one of the most 5 famous guitarists ever on talent alone. But, he was for the band first. And dominated singing, songwriting, and guitar playing.

In 1968, I attended the Jimi Hendrix concert at the Indiana Fairgrounds Coliseum and the back up band was The Chicago Transit Authority. We had never heard of these guys. Then they came out blasting “Introduction” as their lead song, and we were all TOTALLY blown away. Kath was bigger than life!! Plus, we had never heard of such a thing as a rock band with horns!! OMG! One of my life’s greatest experiences!!❤❤❤

A friend in my neighborhood first introduced me to Chicago’s music back in 1970 (Live at Carnegie Hall). I was completely hooked after that. Those guys could jam with the best of them. TK was a complete animal on guitar and had an awesome singing style. Got to see them in person in 1975 (17 years old) at Chicago Stadium with The Beach Boys, 15th row! I was in heaven, knowing that for one night they were performing right in front of me! I got to see them two more times before Kath died. I cried the day I heard the news about him. But, what a legacy they’ve left us. So glad I was able to grow up during their time here on earth.

Terry Kath(g), Peter Cetera(b),Danny Seraphine(d), Robert Lamm(p, organ, etc), Lee Loughnane (trumpet, flugelhorn), Walt Parazaider(reeds n flute), James Pankow ('bone)... we dare not dismiss or forget any... they almost all wrote for/with each other, played till fingers bled to get and stay TIGHT, and to honor their heroes (in 3-5 GENRES of music across hundreds of years), and to love and serve their adopted brothers, their audience, ...heck, even their families back home. All hail the "REAL Chicago 7" (and just as political as the '68 Grant Park/DNC Chicago Seven radicals, too... and miraculously, with a BACKBEAT!)

Terry Kath was in a class by himself! I've seen Chicago 3 times. Twice with Terry & once many years after he died. It became a much different band without him & not in a good way. I'm not talking about his replacement guitarists. They were OK. It was the material. They became a pop ballad group. With Terry not only did they have the greatest guitarist on the planet but an outstanding vocalist & great funky jazz/rock material that was head & shoulders above their later material. Now, so many people have quit so they are a shell of their former selves

He was a great bass player too.. Check out Robert Lamms' album Skinny Boy... Terry was the bass player... brilliant. I must add that Danny Seraphine is one of the great drummers of all time.

Thanks very much for posting this. I have always loved Terry's amazing guitar work, musicianship and persona. He's one of very few that as I age (just turned 55 years young) I love his work even more. Without having that be the case, I wouldn't think it possible. Terry Kath was one of the truly greats of all time. Cheers!

Terry Kath is the most underrated guitarist ever. This guy was amazing. Wish I could have been at this concert but I was 11 years old. I grew up on this music and still love it to this day. I miss Terry's soulful voice.

Even though the camera work is kind of rough on the eyes this footage is priceless. This IS Chicago. Unfettered by AOR hell. There are some mistakes but the performance is good. The sound quality at times is pretty bad. But these guys were so good that the footage remains enjoyable. Gloriously live, unfiltered, raw, powerful. They were more edgy than many would know. Kath really shines in Dialogue and Richard. He gave that Strat a good workout. Some of those fast, tight bluesy riffs had me thinking about SRV's smoking solos. Long live Terry Kath. As Joe Walsh said, he gave Chicago that 'rub' which made them such an exciting band, especially live. Insane playing by Terry in 25 or 6 to 4. A studio Les Paul was an interesting choice to play in live performances.

Never saw Terry play a LP before. He was definitely the leader of Chicago. I remember the day I heard of his death. I was in the kitchen and heard it on my transistor radio. I was just a young teen but it was a complete kick in the gut to me. I couldn't wrap my head around his death at the time.

I was doing a stack of ironing and listening to some Chicago on KZbin in the other room when this came on. I didn't know what it was, but noticed at once the brilliance of the performances and when I finished my work, I realized that it was the Japan Tour which was always supposed to be one of the best, and the video is so much better than previous clips I'd seen. ... I'll be saving this, thanks so much for posting!

Thank you soooo much for posting this, which I somehow had not realized existed on line! Having bought the single LP (heavily edited short of course) many years back, and then much later the double CD from the concerts in Japan, I had always wanted to have a glimpse of it on stage. Just to watch them in the middle section of MOTHER is something magical, let alone all the other wonderful numerous moments, and of course my beloved FREE! What an (skilful) explosion of energy... Thank you again.
