Strange case at a number of levels from BoI's movement of the €500k to the time lines. The theft was detected in 2013, Mullins wasnt interviewed by Gardai until 2018 and not charged until 2021.

A 73 year old woman in Laois, defrauded social welfare of €275,000, sentenced to 2 years in jail. A 61 year old man from D4 , defrauded a bank of €500,000. Let's see how the sentencing differs? Or has he bought his way out of jail. This country was brought to its knees by a corrupt banking system, has anything changed behind closed doors?
@terrygorry2 күн бұрын
The big difference, of course, is Mullin returned all the money and there was no loss to the bank. The €275,000 which was robbed from the State was not repaid. Only a small portion, if memory serves me right, was repaid. And the judge was wondering why the 90 acre farm was not being pursued to allow payback 🤔
@Zionrepublic2 күн бұрын
@terrygorry no loss of money but the money was stolen, the bank could have invested that money and or made interest so a financial loss did occur

What’s the point of having a jury to make a decision if a judge can direct them to acquit someone on a number of charges

Perfect canadate for a political career in Ireland,watch that space , The two main parties in particular would be tripping over themselves to recruit that fella he's got all the credentials to join the club in spades.

Yes theft is theft. It would have been worse if the money was not returned. In those cases, the law should allow salaries and welfare of the thief to be garnished at a hefty rate til it is repaid.

Thanks Terry. Brendan Mullin was a very gifted athlete. Superb runner and an even better rugby player who played at the very highest level of the sport. I can't pretend to know what motivated his actions. From the outside he seemed to have it all, a great education, sport ability, etc.

Thank you for another interesting and informative video. In the 1980s in the Dept of Agriculture a bank official's signature for witnessing official forms was counted on a par with a commissioner of oaths. Now senior and junior bank officials creditability is zero, in longford Town they tried to do away with all cash and tell us it was for our convenience! Sean Fitzpatricks completely reckless lending caused the 3 main banks to lend, follow suit, in the face of all conventional banking practices, this was partly driven by the pension funds and banker bonuses. It nearly bankrupted the country. Sinn Fein I believe, by recklessly offering all things to all men has made the 2 main parties become equally reckless buying votes and may yet bankrupt the state again with President Trumps help, sadly.

Terry, could you check with my learned friend Mr. Grehan, whether it would it count as mitigation if I added value to the stolen chicken by cooking it in a white wine sauce before handing it back to the security guard?
@Don.Challenger2 күн бұрын
Ahh, but would he have given it back after his need had been satisfied (if we call it a zero interest unofficial personal loan), and what of the banks theoretical opportunity cost all those potential alternative uses forgone, and now, or since it was first known of, the loss of the banks public reputation (goodwill impairments) and internal security (trust impairments) - they, for example, must face the realization that they can't put their trust in any of their employees at whatever level ever again.

Come on Terry say it straight, In Ireland, 1 law for the rich and famous and another for the workingclass. Fraud and violent assaults deserve a stretch behind the prison bars. In America these type of crimes won't be tolerated, in some cases in Ireland you recieve a star award. Same Law should apply to all no matter what status, rich, poor, celeb,white collar crime, Ireland stinks of corruption. Fact, money buys freedom. But I don't expect you to agree with me..

A clear concise description of the events. It shows, irrespective of one's job, position in life, taking money from your employer is theft, even if it has been returned.
