I switched from Canon to Sony and one of the first lenses I purchased was the 24-105 f/4 G. A bit later I purchased the 16-35 f/2.8 GM which became my workhorse for video shooting. A few weeks ago I had to send the 16-35 out for repairs and went back to the 24-105. I had totally forgotten how good this lens was! Image quality is superb, autofocus is excellent. I rarely shoot at f/2.8, so f/4 maximum aperture was no big deal.

Good to see another review of this fantastic lens. It was one of the first zooms I purchased after getting back into photography. If you want to do it justice, put it on a Sony A7R3 and R4 and see just how good this lens is. It is SHARP, better when using a high pixel count sensor. I took a photo of my son was about 40 at the time. The image of his eye and eyelashes were absolutely stunning. I couldn't believe just how sharp this lens is. Not to be underestimated, it is a great performer.

Hi Terry, I appreciate you. I just in last 2 months gave up my A99M2 and A77M2. I purchased the A7RM5 and LA-EA5 so I could continue to use my substantial stable of A-mount lenses until I can afford to buy E-mount lenses. I just purchased this lens as my first E-mount. Primarily because I like the range and don't need F2.8. Also, it compliments my Sony A-mount 70-400mm. At some point I will replace the 70-400mm G2 with the 200-600mm but will still probably keep and use the 24-105 because as you probably know the 7RV is 61mp so I can use iit in APS-C mode to breach the gap between 105 and 200mm. I have the feeling a lot of people underestimate 24-105 F4 lenses in general. As you said due to compromises they are not perfect in anything, but useful and very capable in everything. I love my RF 24-105 F4 lens for family moments. The versatility in such an compact full frame lens is my opinion awesome and I think every brand has such a lens, which covers this focal length and features. Great video Terry :)

I’ve traveled the world with my 24-105mm since it first came out and it’s been a great lens. I will be retiring it and getting the 24-70mm 2.8 GM II since I shoot a lot of late night street photography so the extra stop and the improved AF would be very helpful, but other than that it’s been a very dependable all around lens.

I took a 10-week trip and this was the only lens on my camera the entire time. Would I have liked to have something a little wider at times? Sure. Would I have liked a little more reach at times? Sure. But as an all-around single-lens compromise, it really couldn't be beat.

That Ram truck B-roll was great stuff! I have a Sony 24-240 lens that was going to be my go-to one-lens solution for general use. It's pretty good for the job, but it is rough to carry around for a long time! I struggle with it, my tripod struggles with it, and I assume you'd need a beefy gimbal to handle it, too. This seems like a decent option for lighter load needs, but I would definitely miss having the ability to zoom in so much. Tricky trade-off! I definitely need to get a good gimbal for some buttery smooth B-roll like you had of the truck.

I agree, people are easy to dismiss it. F4 on the longer end definitely gives the ability to throw the background out of focus. And a little higher ISO in low light is not a big deal on the newer Sony bodies. I wouldn't use it on an APS-C body though.

I had the 24-105 and sold it for the 28-200. Both lenses are amazing but the reach on the 200mm is too good. Also, the tamron is lighter which is awesome for working all day events and especially travel.

My a7iv only has 2 lenses and I think they are both great, 24-105 f4 and the 90mm f2.8 macro. it is a shame it extends and that its not super super sharp or rapid AF but it has consistent quality at all focal settings. I have lately however gotten addicted to my macro and considered switching the 24-105 for the 16-35 f4 pz that's coming out. a 24-104 f2.8 GM that doesn't extend would be impressive but I wonder if there is a market for such a lens? 🤔

How come I cannot enable IBIS + LENS OSS on my A7s3? I receive a notification saying that the stabilization is only enabled on lens only. What am I doing wrong here? Could someone help me out? How do I enable ibis and lens stabilization at the same time? thanks

Sony cameras hand off stabilization control to the lens once you attach a lens that has OSS built in. You are still getting the benefit of IBIS + OSS, however, it’s just the way Sony works. So you select on or off on the lens and everything else happens automatically. Hope this is helpful

This lens super needs an update. Something like 24-105 pz. Would be nice for streaming with pz capabilities. I think 16-35 2.8 is more important than 24-105 2.8 since 16-35 is for interiors and you indeed need light. Of course 24-105 2.8 would be nice for big bokeh

I fully agree, this is a great all-round workhorse lens. I like the reach, the low weight and the OSS. It's very nice for the slightly slower and lower resolution bodies, and for video. I could imagine that on an A1 (in terms of speed) or an A7Riv (in terms of resolution), you may run into its limitations. On an A7iv or A7Siii it's perfect. I have the feeling they are going to make a Power Zoom version of this lens, to accompany the new 16-35mm f4 Power Zoom. But that is just a wild guess... Sony has great lenses for photography, but for video specifically their offerings are a bit limited. Thanks for another nice video!

@@nathanhassani5366 For the A7Rii this is a great and versatile lens, I have used it on the A7Riii for 4 years and really enjoyed it and had great results. Your camera has 42 megapixel and can shoot photos 5 frames per second, which this lens can keep up with very well, no worries. With the new A7Riv the resolution was increased to 61 megapixel however and the new Sony A1 shoots photos 30 frames per second. This, the lens was not really designed for, and if you want the maximum out of those cameras, it is better to step up towards the 24-70mm f2.8 GM (II) which was designed for that. That lens is sharper and faster to focus, but also more than twice as expensive and has a shorter focal range. As recently a new version of this lens came out, there may be a good second hand market for the previous version, which is still an excellent choice for your camera.

It makes sense about what you said about sharpness, I do have a Sony 20mm 1.8 g on my a7r ii, but to be honest I’m not very impressed with it, or may be it’s just me, either way I want a variable zoom, unfortunately gm lenses are out of the question due to price, so would the 24-105g definitely not be able to take advantage of the 61mp of the a7r iv? The glass just isn’t up to the task? I’ve also been looking at the sigma 16-24 art, ( I want a wide angle also) would the sigma be able to take advantage of the ar7 iv? I’ve heard nothing but good reviews from the sigma, one of the sharpest wide angles out there apparently, close to a gm people are saying.

@@nathanhassani5366 Well, it is not an absolute science. It is about balancing the quality of a camera out with the quality of a lens, and looking where the bottlenecks are in a camera system. If it's slightly out of balance, you may still be happy with the results but you don't use the gear to its full potential. An A7Rii and 24-105mm f4 I would consider in balance, an A7Riv and 24-105mm f4 I would consider slightly out of balance holding the A7Riv a bit back. You may still get results you would be happy with, but to me it wouldn't be an optimal system. For the A7Rii, I think you would be perfectly pleased with the quality and speed. There are other good options too, like the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and several Tamron options. I have no experience with these lenses but some surely get very good reviews and may be worth looking into. The Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 is very nice and sharp lens, and certainly has the resolving power for 42 an 61 megapixel bodies. With 800 grams it is slightly heavy and you cannot use normal filters as it has a spherical front element. You can get rear filters for it from the brand Haida, which are good, but a bit fiddly. I used to have this lens, but I sold it when the Sony 14mm f1.8 GM came out, as I had the 24mm f1.4 GM already and considered it had too much overlap with these 2 lenses. Great lens and great value for money.

It’s really a hard decision to make. I ultimately went with the Sigma, but I often want the extra reach. But the f2.8 wider aperture has also come in handy at times. I can’t have both lenses, but to this day, I wonder what if I had gotten the Sony lens.

This one. The Zeiss 24-70mm is one of the oldest lenses in the E-mount line-up. This one is sharper and the autofocus performs better. If you are looking for a 24-70mm in this price range, I would recommend you to have a look at the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art, which is a great lens and far superior to the Zeiss 24-70mm.
