Also, the "Foundation Series" is another name for "first edition"- there is no charity involved, all money goes straight into Tesla's profit margins (but you do get a bunch of premium features for the extra price).

Look at another area. Autotrader with Radius set to 'Nationwide'. There are over 5000 new F-150Ls listed as available (5500 new and used), with loads priced below MSRP. If your area typically doesn't have great deals on vehicles, it's always best to look at regions that do. When I bought my last car, I went to Baltimore (from Michigan) and saved thousands. If you're looking to get a state EV tax credit, then you'd need to look at the rules for that, but the savings under MSRP may exceed the value of the credit.

@@markplott4820 Mmmmm, I’m attracted to the Silverado as it is a ground up EV design, rather than Fords conversion of an ice vehicle into an EV. Unfortunately the weight of the Silverado is a reflection of where we are in terms of the current battery tech, however, the real world 440 mile range is an enormous attraction to this vehicle. I do a lot of long-distance driving with a Tesla model Y. At Hwy speeds, I’ll get typically between 200 & 250 miles of usable range, depending on the speed. That can make things really really tricky in states where the public charging network is a little sparse. so I don’t think it’s a shitty vehicle at all!

I was really hoping for some breakthrough body tech in the cybertruck, such as the aerospace stressed-skin exoskeleton they initially touted. Also no aluminum involved in the structure. Guess that was a tall order for engineering. If it was wider, longer, a bit taller, and an SUV, I'd want it. As it stands I'll let my day-2 order slip, as here in Canada who knows how long until we can actually have it. Picked up a Y instead to go along with my 3. So far the Y seems amazingly practical. Maybe tesla, since they are making a very conventional body, albeit with stainless slabs stuck on, should have gone all aluminum and beveled the edges. Oh well. Stick a foundation model in storage for 50 years and it'll be pretty valuable, I'd imagine.

Great comparison video! The cybertruck was never on my radar due to its unproven reliability, experimental nature, its outrageous cost, and, let’s face it, it is pretty damn weird looking…… not that there’s anything wrong with that. 😅 😂 Although I’ve only had my 2023 F-150 lightning Lariat for eight months, I can say unequivocally that it is the most amazing vehicle I’ve ever owned and I could not be happier. It is scary fast, whisper quiet, incredibly comfortable, dirt cheap to operate, has excellent storage, great visibility, huge cabin space, unbelievable tech, beautiful interior appointments, spectacular exterior lighting, cameras everywhere, eye-popping metalflake paint, awesome B &O sound system, windows I can actually see out of,……. I could go on for a long time. Too expensive? List was about $70.000. Ford MoCo gave me a $7,500 discount at point of sale, the Dealer gave me a $3,500 discount & the feds gave me a $7,500 tax credit; a total discount of $18,500 making my net price $51,500. (I am 100% certain even better deals are available today.) This is only a little bit more than the price of a similarly equipped ICE (internal combustion engine) F-150; A difference I’ll quickly make up in reduced operating expenses, repairs, maintenance and fuel cost, not to mention the downtime I would lose while my ICE truck is being repaired. (The recommended 10,000 mile service for the lightning is fill the windshield washer reservoir and rotate the tires…….that’s it.) Charging at home at night while I sleep cost me $.14 per kilowatt hour. My 98 kWh battery is good for about 240 miles which is about the distance to New York City from Washington DC; a trip that would then cost me about $14.00. (The published federal fuel economy equivalent for my lightning is 62 miles per gallon.) My lightning has a 98 KWh battery, ten 120 Volt, 20 amp circuits and a 240 Volt, 30 amp circuit. It will power my entire house for up to 10 days. Not only is it an amazing pick up truck it’s also a whole house generator and a tax shelter! (That $7,500 federal tax credit, created a huge tax shelter for me using “bonus depreciation” in the year of purchase.) I feel like I won the lottery every day.

I think of "engineered" as setting a series of requirements (performance, capacity, functionality, etc.) and then designing around these requirement. I would prefer the Ford F150 Lightning upcoming second generation which has to have the battery size and the range of Chevrolet Silverado EV for 2 reasons: largest, most functional frunk, the most comfortable ride. Yes, Silverado has its perks with opening the cabin for cargo, but it's noisier. I'm interested in AC home charging speed. So far Ford has 80 A AC charging capability.

I have to admit that I don’t think the Cybertruck looks as stupid in person than it does in photos and videos. That said, I can’t think of a compelling reason anyone would buy one except that they want something different and they like the attention they get from owning it. I think it is fine for people to buy something just because they think it is cool. I have owned some pretty impractical vehicles in my time. I just feel like a better comparison would be with other “look at me” vehicles like the Hummer EV or even something like the FJ Cruiser.

Certainly not fully accounting for the cost but it is a price to get the product earlier.

I saw a frame comparison on Sandy Munro youtube tear down. The Rivian had much more space beyween the frame rails than the Ford. Maybe Ford needed to keep that frame width so mounting points for the cab and bed would stay the same. A wider distance between frame rails would have given Ford more space for batteries.
@hwirtwirt4500
@hwirtwirt4500 26 күн бұрын
@@golfish8589 The Rivian frame is bolted (about 65 perimeter bolts ) and glued to the body, this looks like a late in the design fix due to lack of rigidity of the original frame design. In doing so there are hydraulic and electrical lines trapped between the body and frame that are unserviceable without major disassembly. Hopefully this will be corrected in future designs. The wider spacing of the frame rails does allow for more battery modules.

You can fit 80" sheets in the back of the CT without it hanging off the tailgate, so long as you don't have a stack higher than 4"! The higher the stack, the more each additional sheet will stick out, giving a reverse stair step hanging out the back. Ayayaya, what a silly design. The benefit of the rear cup holders in the F-150L is you can both use them with 3 passengers in the back seat, or they can become additional cupholders accessible from the front seats. Probably pretty useful for a long road trip for 2 passengers to have 4 cupholders. Meanwhile, in the CT, there are only two cupholders accessible accessible from the front seat, and with 3 rear passengers, there are no rear cupholders since they're in the rear center armrest. Small usability things like this matter. That really shows how Ford designs their trucks, with the ultimate focus being on utility and usability. The Cybertruck is Tesla's first truck, and it shows. Designed more like a stylistic car with a bed, primarily meant for daily commutes and to turn heads, versus as a work and/or utility truck. And that's actually kind of sad. I personally don't promote people buying trucks who don't absolutely need trucks, given their inefficiency and huge resource use. Tesla, "the company that's done for the most for the environment, and the man who by extension who has done the most for the environment", has built a truck that will primarily be used as an extremely inefficient commuter car that in no way is good for the environment. The overall design of the CT just seems flawed and bad. Stainless steel panels sticking out where they can cut people. Huge blind spots. Interior design flaws like not being able to reach the front of the windshield for cleaning. High sidewalls in the truck bed making it impossible to reach over. The weird sloping and inconsistent side walls in the truck bed that skew the dimensions and can make its usable space even smaller than the F-150s. You mention the smaller amount of glass in the F-150L, yet every video it seems like the F-150's interior is brighter and more open. It also has a sunroof that can open to help air it out if the truck's been sitting in the sun, a sun shade if a worker wants to get out of the sun after being in it all day. The frunk in the F-150L looks to be far more usable for multiple applications... except as you point out, putting a single golf bag in it; which oddly enough, is about as the extent of hauling as I expect CT owners to do. Plus, the CT is more expensive. I just don't see in what world a person who actually needs a truck would ever choose the CT over the F-150L. Of course, from the looks of things, most people are still opting for ICEV trucks, so I guess the situation is moot for now.

Lots of interesting data, but considering that the Lightning is selling for something like $100,000 less than it costs to produce it, Ford is going to have to pull a rabbit out of their hat, or they will soon be in the unemployment line. There are reasons I have liked Ford for many decades, but they really need to look at some extreme measures, such as buying a Gigapress to reduce production costs even if it means an enormous up-front expense, plus switching to a complete 48 V system, and an an advanced wiring design similar to the one the CT uses. Adopting Tesla's wiring approach would dramatically reduce copper weight and material cost. Swallow your pride. Use Tesla's cost- saving tricks everywhere you can to keep your head above water. Even if the result is a few grand higher sticker price than Tesla, you may have enough Ford loyalists to make you solvent.

The Cybertruck is Truck 2.0 designed ground up. You had to give up 1/3 of your truck for an engine bay, but keeping that for an EV can't be good design. Cybertruck extends the windshield, no longer needing to shove it in your face, and instantly takes the engine space and gives a spacious cabin impression to driver and pax. The roof of the CT is glass so it's as bright as you want to make it. The CT has a larger bed, but also gives you a tonneau that quickly secures and protects your gear. The Cybertrunck works great as a bench. The stainless steel, on top of saving cost, taking away scratches and damage which is the bane of work trucks (people want their truck to look good so repairs are expensive), it also gives CT 25% more rigidity so it rides much more like a stable sedan than bouncing truck like traditional Lightning. The CT gives you all that space but still fits in almost all garages. Call it an SUV w a bed, or what have you, it excels off road, huge payload, huge towing, lots of space, and great technology making handling easy for all. Not a surprise Ford has one on testing grounds. It's very popular across a wide spectrum of buyers already from rural to urban. The extender will prove popular.

@AAutoBuyersGuide 26 күн бұрын
The ethernet system didn't need the 48V, but the steering system did, as do many other high draw systems. In a logical world if we developed cars new today, 24 or 48V would make more sense than 12V, but there isn't a huge world of benefit and there's also a lack of supplier support for 48V which is why to this point only high draw systems in other vehicles have moved. The reality is that if the device has a low current draw, say interior LED lights, or signaling controls for switches, etc then you are unlikely to save much weight on those systems by switching to 48V because the gauge of the wiring is already very small. Electric power steering should see solid weight savings, but there are other 12/48V out there that run those systems on 48V already. And lastly, the CT still has to have a 12V subsystem around because the lighter socket and trailer wiring harnesses use 12V. I applaud Tesla for pushing their suppliers to complete the transition to 48V on systems like window motors, etc but the long term benefit is unclear. If nobody else follows, then it may just make parts more expensive for Tesla owners, but if the industry does follow then everyone could benefit. Even slight weight reductions are important.

I don't care for the looks of the Cybertruck at all. Furthermore most of the features that make it special actually detract from its usability; the huge windshield that as you noted actually decreases visibility, the single big wiper that doesn't clear as well, the rear window obstructed by the tonneau cover and the rugged stainless steel body panels that show every fingerprint and is harder to maintain than a painted truck, Tesla's obsession with having every control on the screen and the silly steering wheel...and it's really not especially good off-road either. It's just a series of misses in my book. The Ford on the other hand is pretty much what a truck guy would want in an electric truck, as long as they don't tow or don't tow far (and in that use case there's the Silverado EV).

Even avid CT fans have posted about how it’s spent more time in the shop than on the road.

Absolutely no reason to get a CT unless you want to show how much of a "big man compensating for his inadequacy" you are, ironic just like Elon Musk himself. The build quality is beyond atrocious, recalls galore (stuck accelerator pedals, wheel covers eating tires, stainless steel panels falling off etc.) and it isn't particularly good at being a truck with its silly design. The biggest kick in the pants is that Ford is the first OEM with NACS support, which completely eliminates the Tesla advantage since the F150 Lightning can use Superchargers & CCS at your convenience while the CT with its poorly designed charging port location means even Tesla's own CCS to NACS adapter doesn't even work on its own truck.

Ford made a real truck, Tesla made a very odd thing to try to reinvent a product that didn’t need reinvention. I do respect that Tesla engineers tried things like 800v and steer by wire, but that’s all things that Ford can also implement on the next generation of the Lightning.

Cybertruck has higher payload and towing capacity (2500 lbs and 11k lbs). Air suspension allows it up to 16" ground clearance. It has front and rear lockers vs only rear for F150. And you still think Cybertruck isn't a real truck?

Lightning a thousand times over that Tesla crap. If the Cybertruck looked like Tesla’s other cars, then it would’ve been a smash hit.
