IF Tesla meets the full eligibility for SP500 inclusion, and IF it’s voted on to join the SP500..how much of an effect will this have on the stocks price, and is getting added to an index all it takes to boost up the stock?
When a stock is going to be added to an index, it’s announced AHEAD OF TIME - BEFORE index fund managers can actually go ahead and buy it. This leaves time for individual investors and speculators to buy in, anticipating it being added to the index within the coming week - and trying to make a profit.
When it was researched, it was found that stocks DO generally see a rise in price once it’s ANNOUNCED they’re going to be added to an index - but ONCE they’re actually added to the index, the pent up demand slows down - the stock price drops - and then it returns it a new “normal.”

This was also confirmed by a study published in the 1990’s, that found that the announcement and inclusion of a stock within the SP500 DID have a measurable effect on the price…short term.

Long term, however, it was found that adding a stock to an index has no permanent effect on the price.

In fact, it was studied that a stocks “premium” for being added to an index completely wore off after 2 months, usually returning to the same price before it was ever announced.

Likewise, it was also found that stocks REMOVED or BUMPED DOWN from an index did not see any large dip in price, now that they weren’t being bought by an index….

So, IF Tesla gets added to the SP500 - according to all the history and research out there - the ANNOUNCEMENT that it’ll be added will have a MUCH more powerful affect on the stock price than the actual INCLUSION of the stock to the index. After all, Yahoo was cited as being the most recent comparable of its size back in 1999…that stock surged 64% in 5 days between the announcement of being added to the index, and actually being added to the index.

But once a company is added to an index - it must actually PERFORM well, and much of its stock price movement will be from it’s earnings, performance, and ongoing development. Otherwise, if it doesn’t perform well, it’ll get bumped and the price will go down - causing a small percentage of the overall index to go down, with it.
But there’s one message I just want to make clear…in my personal opinion…at these levels, investing in Tesla is a gamble - and if you’re going to buy in, hold it with the expectation of keeping it for at a LONG TIME. This is the type of stock that’ll be just as likely of dropping 50% as it is of going UP another 50%….so, if you buy in, just be prepared for a really, really wild ride - for better or worse.

I’m so happy, I bought 15 shares of Tesla at $200 after I graduated Highschool last year and haven’t looked back since, just sold 10 today at $1700. Here is why this situation is different from the mentioned research: 1. Tesla stock has been incredibly volatile in large part due to huge shorting and low institutional involvement. Addition to the S&P 500 will not only add demand, it will transform the characteristics of the holding base: a _bunch_ of shares will end up in funds obligated to hold onto them instead of profit take or speculate or loan out to shorts; that itself plus the status of being in the index will green light many other institutions to buy and hold; shorts will be squeezed out and have trouble borrowing shares to speculate in the future. 2. Tesla is unprecedentedly big. On inclusion a _lot_ of buying will have to happen on the fund side. A percent or so of trillions is a lot. Say, ~1% of 3 trillion to ballpark = $30 billion = 20 million shares = ~14% of the float. Now, some of that float is locked up and more is reluctant to sell. That 14% will contractually need to be bought, though. The jury's out, but I don't think that the prior research is particularly pertinent here. The first point is actually the one I think will have the longest term effect. We may be seeing a phase change for the stock from daytrading shortsellers' darling to a more broadly-held and stable issue. Just my 2c.

Tesla’s stock price started going on a tear when it was discovered that all of their vehicles have been sending road data back to the company to help build Tesla’s autonomous driving network. No other car manufacturer (regardless of EV’s) is even close in this space. The previous thought that the german auto manufacturers were going to catch up by the time Tesla would become a dominant player has been proven to be false. Once you start digging into the meat of what Tesla has done with their charging network, software programming, electronics, ability to correct manufacturing issues quickly, on top of building a gigafactory in China in a year, the other auto manufacturers have been caught flatfooted. Now Tesla is building a factory in Germany.

This means if you have 3 shares of tesla stock at $1000 and they do a 4:1 split, you will now have 12 shares of tesla stock valued at $250 each. either way you have $3000 worth it just looks different.

Well said, I bought when it was consolidating at $800. I thought it was expensive then and that was before it took off. I'd like to add shares in one of my other accounts, but I just can't comfortably throw $1500 at it right now. I'm selling some put spreads way below it to generate some cash off it, but Tesla is just way too crazy right now IMO. Smashed the like button just to help that effort along. I wouldn't say there's a specific strategy because the market is volatile and conditions varies with time as you can see with the current pandemic we're facing so it's advisable to be spontaneous and adjust slightly with the market conditions when required but smartly especially when the impact on your portfolio is negative.

Well I'll be honest with you, a lot of expertise and experience goes into this. Sometimes, you might need to re-balance or totally revamp your portfolio from poor performing investments to better performing investments and properly diversifying your portfolio for both short and long term gains and like I said earlier, it requires a lot of experience and expertise to do this; from analyzing thousands of stocks to finding out the right time to buy a particular stock so I'd advise you work with a licensed broker/financial planner . One who is an experienced professional and has access to first hand information from companies the moment they become available. This is what I do.

ARK invest really didn’t do much for the recent up swing on the Tesla price. ARK invest has been saying 4-7K minimum price for years now. That is why I bought in over the last few years, and loaded up on it in 2019 when it hit bottom at 180 with all the CNBC negativity. Thank you CNBC. 😚

I feel as if regardless, Tesla is a great company and with the Tunnel projects and Solar energy. I feel like in 10 years time it probably will be worth $5000 to $15,000. Of course alongside all other companies hitting the 2000-5000 dollar mark knowing how compounding works. What do you think?

I think the market valuation is totally crazy... . Everyone says you cannot value Tesla as a car manufacturer, but if you calculate the margin (like a car manufacturer does) you get the same margin like other classic car manufacturers... . Everybody talks about how high the stock rises and not about data like revenue, growth etc. ... this shows me that this is a big bubble... .
