I continue to explore ideas to improve my Tesla.
I've designed and built custom seats. Came up with a window wind noise approach.
Now I'm working on road noise. This is caused by the tires on the road, especially rough asphalt.
The work I did in the video did seem to help.
But it did not stop the higher frequency sounds that seem to be getting in the side doors and side windows. Next I will be doing more work with doors and windows to reduce tire road noise. I saw someone somewhere mention the noise reverberates through the rocker panels and gets into the doors and windows. That will be another project and seems involved. What I did to dampen vibrations in the trunk and wheel wells was already involved, exhausting, and somewhat difficult to do.
Although I have no scientific measurements.
I believe the work did cut down the lower frequencies and body vibrations.
But it's not enough for me. I'll continue the quest.
I also believe trying to absorb sounds with more expensive sound materials would not be that fruitful. Again, I think we are getting noises from tires on the road, and it becomes airborne, then finds a way into the car. I'll be trying to engineer approaches for that.

Hi George, thanks for sharing! My car is modely. at first I was bothered by road noise and wind noise as you are. I would also like to give you some tips for trunk soundproofing that I hope will help you. You are doing the right step of applying the shock absorber plate, this will help to reduce the low frequency noise in the trunk location, but you will also need to apply acoustic foam on top of the shock absorber plate in order to reduce the high frequency noise, so that you can achieve the best reduction of road noise and resonance. Also, if you are very concerned about road noise as I am, make sure you do four wheel soundproofing, it helps a lot to reduce road noise. PS: My native language is Chinese, so I used the translation software to do this review, I hope to apologize for any mistakes. You know what I mean on the line.

Can you give an example of what material you recommend? "acoustic foam on top of the shock absorber plate"

Hi George. I can't see which wheel size you have on this Model 3, but if you have the option, I'd really recommend trying some 18" wheels since a taller tire sidewall makes a big difference in road noise over rougher surface. I'd also check if the area where the front wheel well meets the cabin is damped enough since that's also a possible culprit for too much road noise. Wish you well in your experiments, please do report if you have any success.

I agree. I think most of the noise now that I did the sound dampening in the wheel wells is tire higher frequency and I think most of it is coming in the doors and windows. I'll be trying to close that off more over time. I have a 22 Tesla Model 3 Performance. It came with very tall 20" wheels. I don't really want smaller wheels, like the 18" and it costs quite a bit to change over. If this continues to bother me and i get some extra cash, I'll consider the change. I have not worked the underside of this car for road noise ... yet. Thank you, George

I'm at a point where more noise dampening / absorbing isn't doing a lot more to get rid of remaining annoying sound/vibration. The car is amazingly quiet on more normal road surfaces. It's still those rougher asphalt roads that are annoying. I think less annoying now but there's still enough to continue working on it. I am down to suspension, wheels, tires. First I'm changing the shocks. It's the cheapest of the 3 choices mentioned. I should have them next week. I've been preparing the shop and myself for that job. The noises remaining are a kind of pounding deeper sound and vibration that is at that tire/road interface that gets amplified or isn't dampened by the suspension. That vibration seems all over the car, coming from no specific area. Sometimes it feels like oscillating sound pressure. I'll try my best to determine how helpful the shocks are at those sound but I full expect less jarring and a better overall ride, in any case. I haven't decided if I'll ever commit to expensive wheel replacement. But I'm certain I'll go from summer tires to All Season tires when the time comes. I'm in Florida and use summer tires all year. The pros also claim spraying the wheel wells will help. It didn't do anything that I could tell on another car (non Tesla) that I did a big sound deadening job on. So that isn't happening unless all else fails.

Try this also there are quiet tires too try hankook ion evo tires the interior of the tires are sound dampening foam

Yes, the stock OEM Pirelli PZero tires also have foam and are EV specific with noise quieting. I've read that going from my 20" wheels to 18" wheels which have taller and softer tire sidewalls is very helpful also. And going from summer tires to All Season tires can help. Thank you

I just bought those tires and they don't help. 2020 M3P on 20"s. On rough asphalt those tires are just as loud as my stock Pilot Sport S
