Tesla Model 3: Standard Range+ versus Long Range

A change in the car policy at work has seen me swap my 2020 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range + for a 2020 Model 3 Long Range - literally the exact same colour and registered the same month (September, so pre-the December 2020 'facelift'). I have completed 10k miles in the SR+ and the LR joins me with just 5k miles on the clock.
I've been driving around in the new car for 2 weeks and wanted to share my thoughts on the difference between the two cars. Both are brilliant, but definitely not the same.
I may have snuck in a cheeky 0-60, too!

Paul another great video! You answered my question, 'if this wasn't you car what would you buy, You would buy M3LR or the Model Y'. I'm currently in Japan, and the M3LR were 24% discounted , literally that was £30K , I was thinking buying one at that price, if that discount was still available, drive it for 3 years and export it back to the UK and sell it and get my money back! That was the plan in my head. My wife is not as keen lol If you were to go back to a combustion engine car what would you buy? another Q7? As the cost to buy an EV, and electricity costs in the UK is so high. The used diesels car market with decent MPG, may work out just as if not more economical driving 10K a year? Also would you have considered a used Tesla model S or X over a Model Y or Model 3 ? Thanks again for your videos and engagement ;)

Hi Richard, Thanks so much for the positive feedback! Much appreciated. To be honest, I would be very hard pushed to go for an ICE car again, despite the high purchase cost of an EV. It’s not just the reduced running costs, as expensive electricity is still cheaper than petrol or diesel, which is also very expensive at the moment (here, at least); It is the whole driving experience which I have fallen in love with: it’s smooth, quiet, economical and practical one minute, and then a complete lunatic the next! There’s just nothing with an engine that offers all of that without at least one compromise. That deal you mentioned on the M3LR sounds amazing - they’re £54 in the UK currently, I believe, so your money would be safe if you were able to import it. In answer to your question about a used S or X, I would have absolutely bought a used X (and nearly did), had I not been given the company M3. A used S also looks good, especially with its hatchback boot, but, unlike the X, with its unique design, I’m not sure it has enough to choose over a newer M3. The new version of the S, with that updated interior, is a different story altogether - I’d LOVE one of those, but they haven’t even arrived in the UK yet, so no used models for years yet. One distinct advantage of a used X or S from pre 2018, which you may not know, is that Tesla gave those cars free supercharging for the life of the car. Providing it has not been back into the Tesla used stock since then, as they now switch it off, it will still be live. Therefore, a 2017/8 Model X with either 6 or 7 seats might be the perfect machine. After all, there’s nothing more economical than free!

For the 2020 model at least the Long Range DC charging speed is faster. 250 kWh max as opposed to 170 kWh max. The AC charging rate is 48 amps max as opposed to 32 amps and the battery warranty is longer, 8 years & 192,000 kms instead of160,000 kms. There are also foot well and puddle lights.

The RWD is a smaller battery and is more efficient so the real world difference is much less than the armchair quarterbacks would think. Not to mention, the LFP battery pack maintains a higher charge rate throughout the charge cycle than the 2170 cells do. The charge time per mile is very similar between the two cars despite the peak charge rate differences.

I can’t deny that, had it been a choice from work, I’d go for the Y. The 3 is nearly the perfect car, in my view, but I do wish it had a bigger, more accessible boot - enter the Y!

Carwow did a video comparing all 3 of the model 3s on their runway, the results were genuinely surprising! As the model year changed and the price increased, the new RWD does now include as standard: heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, designated "wiper defrost", and... floor mats!! (But it's slower now, 5.8 seconds to 60). I don't think I'd have bought the long range at £55k, I was lucky last year getting mine at £47k

was thinking about buying a used tesla , but I can't see putting 30 to 35 grand in a car that has little or no warranty , especially when i heard how expensive it is to have one of them repaired

I can appreciate your concern. Have you looked at third party warranties that you buy yourself? Could be worth considering, even if just for a year, to put your mind at rest while you become acquainted with the car and assess if problems seem likely?

@@PaulsViewsReviews no I think now that the Chevt Bolt is a much better value, model 3 has a range of 277 miles and no one gets that much, the Bolt has a range of 259 and many are getting more than that and it cost over 10 thousand less
