Tesla Model 3 TUNED! Time to Buy an EV?

The Startech Tesla Model 3 is a genuine surprise! With the ever present question of when it will be time to add an electric Shmeemobile to the garage, join me to check out this tuned Tesla from the sister company of Brabus and an opportunity to really drive the EV on track.
The full Startech package for the Model 3 consists of a new look front bumper, side skirt add-ons, a 3-piece rear spoiler, new Monoblock M wheels, lowered suspension by 30mm and the option for a bespoke interior too. This specific car is the Model 3 Dual Motor with 450hp and 600Nm which does the 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint in just 3.2 seconds thanks to the instant torque and all wheel drive with one motor per axle. The tuning of the performance itself is completely locked down by Tesla hence no traditional increase in power as with a combustion engine.
After exploring the car and the modifications made by Startech, it's a first for me both to drive a Model 3 variant, but also to drive an electric road car on a race track. Despite the inconvenience of additional weight from the batteries, there's plenty of fun to be had, in fact quite a surprising amount! With eerie almost-silence while pushing the car around, the power is a plenty, and the drive more exciting than I'd thought, however the original brakes certainly let the side down as they heat very quickly considering the weight.
With the Model 3 becoming a huge seller very quickly, a new look to the front creates a very positive difference and allows the car to stand out more from the crowd. However, I'll make no secret that the drive furthers my interest in considering to add an electric Shmeemobile to the garage to get to grips with the technology shift and ease of living with such a thing - especially when it comes to road trips and Nurburgring laps!

Hi Tim: My advice would be "just wait a little while longer". Reason is, it looks like we are about to move forward into new frontiers of battery tech. In your case, you might expect greater range--or (with better power density) you might expect to see the battery provide great track performance, with substantially reduced weight and the benefits it creates. Worth driving a performance model on track Tim. That has a lot of the upgrades from the factory like brakes, tyres, suspension etc needed and is a lot faster. However some owners that use their cars regularly on track have upgraded again the brakes, brake fluid, suspension, wheels etc which turns the cars into a great track weapon! Next time, try using the regenerative braking as a "pre-brake." That allows you to keep your foot over the accelerator more, recover energy in the batteries, and reduce the use of the friction brakes, keeping them cooler.

@@Shmee150 The new model S Plaid will come out end of year/early next year and this will have battery tech and drive train that the Roadster will have. It should also come with a number of changes and a bodykit. So it could give you a good idea of how that car will be whenever it does come out.

For the model 3 you can download the tesla app and use your phone as a bluetooth key. You wouldn't need to use that card anymore to unlock/lock or start the car! Though if people lend you their model 3, most won't give you app access and just give you that card key.

I own a Model 3 too and at first when I saw the silver brake calipers, I thought it may be the Long Range Non-performance....but...he said it was the faster car with 3.2 sec 0-60, so I thought it was the performance without the performance plus package (larger red brake calipers, spoiler, lower suspension). Nope...once he showed the screen, acceleration was set to "standard" instead of "sport". So it's not a performance model. They can still upgrade the software for "acceleration boost" to get sport mode on that car. Still a very quick and nice car!

I am seeing this months after it was recorded. By now, the Plaid has been out for some time. However, the facelift for the 3 is an amazing improvement. Startech should open a branch here in the US as I think it would foster an amazing amount of business. I think model 3 owners would be lining up for this appearance update. If not, why couldn't they ship the parts to the US for assembly here? I think there is a huge franchise opportunity for this company. You never mentioned what this package cost to have installed on these cars. I would sure love to know. We all know by now you settled on the Porsche Taycan turbo s. I do agree with the style and especially interior in the Porche is of much higher quality, but so is the price. It's way up there. This obviously isn't an issue with your seemingly unlimited access to cash. Thanks for a great video as usual.

There was one model 3 performance in Tesla club Finland track day. That had 18k€ RB 390mm ceramic brake kit and he was doing very fast laps (don't know if he had coilovers or stock suspension)

Performance has track brakes, suspension, tyres, wheels and most importantly "track mode" so adjustable torque bias, traction control etc. You are in the wrong car for the job. There is no problem on road trips. You could say to it "Sorrento" and it will take you there with 6 charging stops in 24 hours 15 minutes, plot all charge stops and co ordinate your arrival as the car talks to the chargers. You are in the Long range Model 3......50% of you audience probably have more knowledge of performance electric cars than is exhibited here. Startech can stick as much tat on the outside of a Model 3, better off buying the Performance leave it stock and leave M3s for dust.

Just went to a Tesla dealership today and test drove the Model S p100D in ludacris + and I was not ready. I had a headache and felt nauseous for like an hour. It was fun though, but I placed an order for the Model X. Tim, my Model 3 is for the most part only used for going around town for work and errands. I charge at home, and with a electricity scheme that allows for free usage at nights, so it’s free to charge. But, as a daily it pretty much can’t be beat. Plus, if you do want to take a trip, the Supercharger network is THE single best network available. It will be years before anyone else catches up, and that’s if Tesla doesn’t continue to expand its network (which it obviously will).

It was time in 2012 but I think a 3P is a no brainer daily driver for you because it delivers at every intersection, every movement without sounding like a tool, it's not huge to park and you aren't risking quarter of a million. If it has to be more flashy then the Taycan does stand out in various ways. Btw the Model 3 was just updated a few days ago with factory chrome delete and different center console and heat pump for more efficient heating. Same price. Bit more range too. And it sort of can chauffeur you around. Be warned though, there is a genuine chance you wont want to drive your expensive gassers anymore :)

there build quality really sucks. the interface is clunky, and tesla sucks to deal with. I bet if most Tesla owners were honest they would say they suck, but they are such snobs hey will never admit it. My Dad had a Tesla, we got rid of it real fast, and thank god it's gone
