Man, I love the looks of those Kempower chargers! So inoffensively and unobtrusively small, unlike Alpitronic chargers for example. Long, flexible cable, so any car can charge in pretty much every parking position. I really wish Tesla would take note on the cable part if they’re going to fully open up their superchargers!

I tried to find an improvement in noise level by turning on ANC. I couldn't identify any real improvement. I considered trying to measure it but concluded if I couldn't hear the difference it didn't mater what the number were. Tesla and everyone else are rather silent on ANC these days. It really doesn't do much. While anti-noise works very well in the small enclosed volume of a headset ear cup it is impossible to get the same result in a large volume. Attempts at cancelling in an airplane cabin have failed there too.. I have tried as you and others have to see an improvement in efficiency by lowering the suspension. That doesn't do much if anything either. The window defog performance is pitiful and even dangerous in high humidity condiitions and the auto wipers don't work nearly as well as my Volvo did 20 years ago. Never the less I've been driving Tesla's for 8 years couldn't go back.

Hi Bjorn, if you're willing to put another couple of hours into this to follow up, you could put the original recorded audio into Audacity and get some spectra. This would show the "true" effect of the ANR cutting a little of the rumble. Quite graphic. You would probably be able to show the noise profile of different tyres from some of your historic tests too. Part of the problem for us if that the audio we heard is re encoded by your video rendering, again but Google for YT and then by whatever device you listen on. The spectrum would be more "genuine". Excellent video as usual.

I prefer real acoustic isolation and treatment, not the fake electronic one, it makes me dizzy. Great test, btw, I dig the noise test from the passenger headrest position! We have to compare cars from the same place. Also, the sound profile of the noise has to be considered, pure db levels don't tell much.

I have a Plaid up in the north of Norway. My expreience is that the level of salt (both on dry and wet roads) makes a lot of difference in acceleration. Salt makes less grip on a road without ice. I had a Model 3 Performance before. I did not feel any difference between salty and not salted roads. No doubt that the Plaid feels close to twice as fast as my old car. It is a device for frictiontesting.

Yes, indeed. Wider, stickier tyres and lowered/stiffer suspension setup will shorten brake distance. Big/better brake kit will only prolong brake fade and not shorten brake distance.

"for those who are wondering what the Tesla Model S Plaid's 0-60 time is on unprepped asphalt, without the 1-foot rollout, without drag mode, without launch control, without pedal overlap-so, just "slap-n-go"-the unadulterated 0-60 time is 2.45 seconds" - Motortrend Tesla Plaid Channel has some good results to look at for over 400 runs with the Plaid, first half with back seats, the other half with them removed. I think his best 1/8 mile (~0.2km) result was around 5.95s, and 1/4 mile (~0.4km) was around 8.9s iirc.

GREAT explanation Bjørn of the importance of tires and also the braking. The Plaid brakes are fine, unless, like you mentioned, you drive it on the track or do several hard brakings without letting the brakes cool down. In regards to testing acceleration and braking again, please just wait for the spring, so you can put on some summer tires. The amount of power the Plaid has, needs all the grip it can get. My Plaid in the DRY, at 140+ has wheelspin with stock winter (R5s) tires.
@johnhadlow9345
@johnhadlow9345 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Bjørn! FYI Winter 21's (PZero Winter) on MSP work very well once rolling but still not close to level of Pilot Sport summer for full-bore starts, braking or surprisingly, turn-in on corners. Nice that they are W rated so the tyres are faster than the car today. I'm waiting for Spring. Perhaps re-run with OEM summer rather than other winters? I think that the noise is a bit worse on PZero Winter (M01A) than summer (T2 Michelin). Perhaps because no foam in winters and foam liner (and a temperature sensor) in T2 21's. Plaid really needs the grip from a standstill.

ANC in an "open area" is very hard to accomplish. The microphones detecting the noise need to be as close as possible to your ears, rather millimeters than centimeters. And thats a diffirent location for every one and every passenger.

12:44 - Why, why, why did Marcus put narrower winter tires on the Plaid? Surely it came with the correct width tires. Crazy. Here is hoping you can re-test in the summer with the correct tires on the car. Did you feel any tire slippage during hard acceleration (which reduces the power)?

Very interesting with this active anti-noise built into the headrests. It seems that the ANC, as I could predict, is mostly the long wave sound (the bass) that is reduced. High frequency sound will be very difficult to reduce with active anti-noise. In my opinion, noise must first of all be perceived subjectively and a decibel figure tells only a limited part of the sound perceived by a human ear.
@FGGiskard
@FGGiskard Жыл бұрын
14:30 Maybe appart from the fact that germans undersell the 0-100, a winter tire will probably only be able to put down on the road X amount of power. So maybe the other cars, since they are not as powerful they do not "loose" as much power compared to summer tires.

all correct. one time braking the tesla brakes are fine, as long as the abs starts working or the wheel locks, the brakes are enough and stopping distance couldnt be improved. when it comes to multiple brakings, the brake will overheat and start fading - but this will only happen on tracks. same for model 3/Y.

15:00, there is a big grip problem when you have the power to go below 2,5s 0-100 with the Plaid on winter tires. On the Mercedes it has the power to go ~3.3s 0-100 much less a problem with the grip. So no matter the power under the hood you cannot go under 3s 0-100 on winter tires. So a slower accelerating car say +6s 0-100 would not really care about being on winter tires vs summer tires.

Old 80s Toyota had ANC built in for a quiet ride.
