How has the Tesla Model Y held up over the past 5,000 miles and what have we learned since we took delivery in April?
The Tesla Model Y started delivering in March of 2020. We took delivery in the beginning of April and have since put on just over 5,000 miles. There have been some highlights in that time, specifically around cost, and now is a great time to discuss the good and bad over this time.
Financially, the Tesla Model Y has been an extremely positive experience. There is no question that the cost to operate an electric vehicle is substantially cheaper than a traditional gas car. I will break down that cost difference in the video, which includes how much we would have spent on gas in the same period vs the electricity that we have purchased.
I like to talk a lot about the overall driving experience of the Tesla Model Y and why it is such a compelling car. There are so many great features, beyond just the cost savings. The safety of the vehicle is one of the areas the car shines and is often overlooked. Also, it's a fun car to drive. Road trips are made easier with Autopilot, but that does not mean it's a perfect system.
Finally, I will overview the various accessories that we have purchased during our ownership that I think are good value. I also highlight the accessories we are looking forward to adding to the Tesla soon.

@@Jerryklocke A few issues, mostly software bugs. Body panels all look good. Everything is tight. Hitch cover is tough to get off. I broke a few clips getting it off (bright side, its easier to remove :) Has 7 pin plug looks secure haven't tested it yet. The software has giving me microphone issues when i use voice command. Had to soft reset. The big issue ive had is when the back seats are down the car thinks someone is sitting there with out seatbelt. It then disables cruise and autopilot. A work around is click baby seat icon to trick it. But it should know. Also phone key is finiky, but i have old android phone and i blame that. Other then that it is awesome. Best tesla so far! Enjoy, ill be camping in it shortly.

Definitely interested in PPF for the front of the car, I like DIY projects it's just a matter of finding the time. The drive back from Ohio netted a lot of bugs on that bumper! I would buy FSD if it was purchased on "my account" and was portable from vehicle to vehicle as I changed over the years. In that case, it's just a speculative investment and I think a worthwhile one. My concern is that FSD won't be viable until after my vehicle is, ahem, a bit out of date and I'm ready for the next one. So I just am not seeing the value in it right now.
@BeardedTeslaGuy
@BeardedTeslaGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Totally hear you on this. Weighs heavy on my mind too in the same manner. Hard to justify such a large cost. But these tech filled cars get outdone rather quickly like you said.
@JohnVanDeVoort
@JohnVanDeVoort 4 жыл бұрын
I'm with you. Just picked up my Model Y on June 25th. I've been struggling with FSD upgrade (especially since the price increase on 7/1). It doesn't seem worth $8k to avoid disengaging/re-engaging autosteer with lane changes (which is most of the value to me at current functionality). By the time we're in our next vehicles, the price of FSD will likely be over $10k, making the value-to-cost even more of an issue. I'm hoping other car manufacturers (EV or not) increase competition in this tech to cause Tesla to re-evaluate pricing.
@linemanap
@linemanap 4 жыл бұрын
when tesla figures out level 5 FSD they will stop selling cars. it would make zero sense to sell them at that point. they would simply build them and send them out for hire . each vehicle would be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars at that point. 1 million mile battery at $1 a mile.?

I went and looked up people riding in their car with their dogs. I really try to take my dogs everywhere that I can so a car that I can really bring them in is so good. I wasn’t concerned since I learned about dog mode I would just need to do the normal cleaning out my car like I do with a normal gas car.

I test drove a XC60 and it was OK, but felt old and was more expensive than I thought it would have been. 30 minutes after that test drive I went to Tesla and drove a Model 3 (before Model Y was out). The Tesla was way, way better to drive and I ordered it a week later. You will love it 👌 Ironically Tesla wasn't even on my list because I wanted an SUV, but the Volvo guy made some snarky comment about how "unlike Tesla, their driving assistance hasn't killed anyone" ... and so now I own a Tesla 😅

So I’ve had my Y for a month. I do lobe driving it and it looks great, but I do not ever want to take it on a trip again. I’ve done so twice and it added so much time to our trip. Over an hour to charge it every time at the Superchargers. 🤦🏾‍♀️
@BeardedTeslaGuy
@BeardedTeslaGuy 4 жыл бұрын
@@mulrey31 Oh no! There are charging strategies that will drastically reduce your charging time. You should only stop long enough to make it to the next charger, not the full charge recommended when you get there. 10-50% charge should take about 15 minutes, 50-80% takes a solid 25 minutes. 80-100% another 20-25 minutes. No questions though, this for sure adds time compared to a quick 10 minute gas stop. Going from Indiana to Florida, charging adds about 2 hours to the trip, compared to probably 2 quick 10-15 minute gas stops. We combine eating stops with charging to help lessen the blow.

I finally got my Y on the 26th, and it’s been undergoing ‘beautification’ in LA since the 28th. I pick it up today and get to drive 160 miles home to its own personal garage and Tesla wall charger! I finally get to hang my ‘Tesla Parking Only’ parking sign in my garage. I might even hang my ‘S3XY’ poster too!!!!! I’m so silly! Can you tell I grew up a farm kid from Brown County?!! (BTW-if you ever go down 135 to Nashville, look for ‘Nanny Hill’ between Morgantown & Bean Blossom. I helped my parents clear that land. They actually gave a 7 year-old a Machete!!!!) I might even pick up some mulch on the way home... I got the complete Tesmanian mat set and they are FABULOUS and a good tight fit. My roof screen does not sit flush against the roof, but I bought it to make sure my bulldogs stay cool. I will let you know how it works on a super bright and hot CALI/AZ day. Please be safe at the beach, especially with your babies. The virus has mutated and is much easier to catch now. Have a safe and happy 4th of July!!!

Have you missed having a dashboard display? I don't know how I'd feel not being able to see my speed limit right below the wheel.. Do you ever wish you had Falcon and automatic doors like the Model X? Or is it worth it to pay less and not have those? Also, what did you mean about having to un-engage autopilot when changing lanes? I thought you just switch down the blinker and it'll switch lanes? Sorry for all these questions. Just looking for incite!
@BeardedTeslaGuy

Great questions. I thought the same about having the dashboard but I don’t even notice it’s not there. Less than a week of driving and you don’t mind it. No thanks on the Falcon doors, seems like a headache should something go wrong. Cool no doubt, but if it was an option, I’d pass. The car only does automatic lane changes with full self driving right now ($8k) so I don’t have that. With standard autopilot when you switch lanes, autopilot disengages

I test drove a y and put in an order. The seats are comfortable, but the ride is a bit stiff, and road noise is average. For $50k a q5 with air suspension is much better. I wouldn't say its bad, but not a selling point in this price range. Although the MY doesn't really have any direct competitors.

Hiya. Am in the UK and am waiting patiently for the Y to arrive... My wife's only concern (apart from the price!) is the lack of a parcel shelf... When you do the safety features video, could you talk about this? What if you rolled the car with heavy objects in the boot - surely they would fly into the main cabin...? I don't understand why there isn't at the very least an option to buy one or a guard rail to separate the cabin from the boot? Hope you can help as I've been working on getting a Tesla for 18 months now, and finally have a wife who sees the Y as a good (if way more expensive than she'd like!) car for our family - but the parcel shelf safety issue is now her main concern.... Keep up the good work - really enjoy your videos!
@BeardedTeslaGuy
@BeardedTeslaGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Well first of all, welcome from so far away! We are so glad to have you. I’m not 100% sure what a parcel shelf is but I think you mean that cover for the hatch area? If so, I think there has been a lot of discussion on this in forums and there is not a likely good option for retrofit. Now, if you are worried about it because of roll over, keep in mind that Tesla’s not only achieve outstanding crash test results, but the Model X scored a perfect rollover rating. The 3 and Y have similar characteristics and are obviously way less likely to roll over than an x. That battery on the bottom is the trick.

Thanks for the info. Just found your channel. Got my Model Y on June 12th. When did you find out that auto-park only works with an empty space between 2 cars and how did you find out? I drove through many parking lots waiting for the "P" to show up, contacted service about it and made an appt. talked to service about it repeatedly and no one ever mentioned that it had to find a place between 2 cars. There are at least 2 inexpensive ev's that will find empty spaces between 2 lines and park. I find it very frustrating to have a bought a car that is supposed to be more advanced than any other ev but it won't auto-park when there are no other cars on either side. Quick question. Not sure where you are located but everyone that own Tesla are located in California and Tesla offers insurance which is substantially cheaper than insuring the car on the East coast. You mentioned saving money on gas vs electricity but if you are close to 2k for insurance for 6 months rather than $400 for 6 months on a similarly priced gas car, there are 1600 in saving from insurance cost. So if that's the case, i don't know if it makes any sense in comparing gas vs electric. Just a thought.

What gimbal do you use, as the slow tracking in turns is nice? Regarding charging, in Europe the model 3 (and Y will) have CCS. As that is the current standard in Europe, most (if not all) new chargers installed have CCS. Imagine the luxury of not having to need an adapter and relatively easy alternative backup option (the not so easy bit is signing up to another "club").
@BeardedTeslaGuy
@BeardedTeslaGuy 4 жыл бұрын
For sure! Wish all chargers were standard. They tried to do that but the OEMs kind of set the standard back in the day rather than a government mandated standard. You should have let people know that the autopilot price is going to continue to go up overtime. Also, autopilot and full self driving is going to be continually upgraded over time. In that sense, 5 years from now when their self driving software is at a level 5 in terms of autonomy but by then the price will likely be over $10,000 or more. Seems smarter to pay the cheaper price now and be locked in for life for future autonomous driving updates.

@@BeardedTeslaGuy for sure, but I'd imagine a used tesla with autopilot already purchased will do wonders for resale. that is likely the best thing you could do to futureproof the car and the value of the car if you choose to sell it. Great vid. A few additional comments: Space. I too am coming from a Pacifica (and own a CRV). While the space in the Y is pretty big, it's not as utilitarian as the space in the Pacifica, but does blow away the CRV. In other words, the space is different. I was able to use my Pacifica to transport sheets of plywood and 12 foot 2x4s or fit 7 people in it. Can't do in the Y. So, depends on your needs and how you need space. FSD is over-rated and I predict will be for a long while. I have a M3 with FSD and the Y without. If I were to get my 3 again, I'd get it without FSD. The only thing I miss is the lane changing, but not the auto changing. However, not worth the 7-8k upgrade (whatever the price is now). I rarely let my M3 change lanes by itself because it's not that good at it, but when I hit the blinker, I don't have to disengage AP to do it. Wish the non-FSD had that. Summons is the only other FSD function that's worth having, but it too doesn't work that well yet. +1 on the TASMANIA mats, -1 on the screen protector. Have tried a bunch, they all suck. Some distort the screen (making font blurry), others still get smudges...haven't found one worth it, and cleaning the screen is very easy and not hard to do. Watch some vids on UV tint...doesn't really help that much with heat transmission (there are KZbin vids from TESLA owners and even from Consumer Reports). Works a bit for glare, but then compromises night time vision. I have tint on my 3 and not on the Y and the interiors get hot at about the same rate. I too had my appointment moved because parts weren't in. It is TESLA!! Regarding PPF, I agree with you but I was able to get a good deal on the PPF so went with it. I thought about getting the car wrapped which would be like PPF and I'd get a unique color (matte blue) But, in the end the pearl white is nice, so just got PPF on the front. 278 is nice! Good luck.

Tesla's extensive Supercharger network is a good thing for the Tesla owner, however, the SuperCharger is a vendor lock-in situation. It would be much better If there were a general charging standard for all-electric cars. Think of a situation where every internal combustion engine car would use a different fuel and/or refuel must do it with its own (brand) gas station?! The fact that each car builds its own charging station network. Doesn't seem very sensible. Customers pay for the cost of duplicate charging stations. In Europe, the European Union can force carmakers to cooperate, but in the US there will hardly be any mandatory legislation on this.
@BeardedTeslaGuy

Don’t disagree at all. The OEMs got away with this 10 years ago and we did nothing to stop it. Now here we are. The legacy guys sat back hoping the tax payers would pay for the network, and Tesla charged ahead doing it themselves. In the end, we have several different formats.

He has stated he can make 3x -5x more money per car produced by keeping it and operating it as a taxi than by selling it to a consumer. He said he'd have to sell the Model S for $300K to make it worthwhile to sell to the public rather than become a taxi company. So buy it while you can, it's not going to last. Every electric car manufacturer is thinking along the same lines. Get car ownership out of consumers hands. It's coming. The future of driving is very bleak for car lovers.

I’m concern with tesla reliability after warranty is over. if I get the vehicle, I would like to keep for minimum of 10 years. Repair for out of warranty is extremely expensive.

I hear ya, and yes, very expensive out of warranty. I wouldn’t be scared of the car later in life. In fact, the issues with the car seem to be on the front end of lifecycle. Plenty of very high mileage Tesla’s on the road.

Without giving out any specifics, a roll of major brand PPF, enough to wrap a whole car, would cost $1200-1400. That’s not that much if you have a large plotter and know how to work with PPF, or willing to learn.

Yea, that’s starting to make sense. But the problem is that doesn’t cover the labor and overhead a business charges to keep the place running. I’ve seen upwards of 6k quoted, just insane. Without making an investment in equipment, a DIY precut solution may be a decent option. We will surely find out soon.
