I think one thing that could’ve been noted to remind people that own a Tesla that would consider getting spare tire, is to make sure to review the owners manual to see where on the four entry points (next to each tire) to jack up the car so you don’t potentially puncture the battery underneath or the side panel. There’s a hole under each four entry points that can be used for an adapter to slip into.

This is an especially great option if you know you're taking a long road trip. No better way to screw up your timing on a road trip than to have a flat on the side of the road that you spend hours trying to fix because you're in the middle of nowhere. I definitely recommend to anyone that's planning long road trips to figure out some way to carry some type of spare tire with you even if if it's a cheap donut style that's better than nothing. I like the fact that this tire is not just a donut spare, and that you can run regular highway speeds and not worry about it.

Nice. I made my own spare tire as well for my Model S. I bought the donut rim from BMW for a reasonable price. Then, I found an unused donut spare at a junk yard that had the right dimensions for the Model S. I had the tire from the junk spare put on the BMW rim, and vwalla... my own spare tire. It cost me just over $100.

Many european car brands uses this type of tire as a spare. Less space in the trunk and you can't exceed 80km/h with that tire. Congratz for the channel! It's great!

This will be one of my accessories I buy, in town I’ll leave it in my garage. Will only carry it on long road trips. Of course I’ll add some sort of tarp t8 hold the dirty flat tire, flashlight, work gloves and safety road triangle. If I get a flat on a road trip and Tesla Road Side Assistance can’t respond quickly or I’m near my destination this is a great option.

Great video. This would be awesome for road trips etc. I wouldn't want to carry the extra weight for my daily commute or to the grocery store, a compressor is just fine for shorter trips and most slow punctures.

I have a model YP just got my second set of Pirelli P Zeros at 23,000 miles,front tires were at 50% at rears were almost slicks,did not realize how bad they were until I got on floor to fix a hole the day before I replaced tires.

I purchased this exact spare tire kit after having two flats last year on my Model 3. One a screw through the sidewall and another 3 months later a blowout of unknown cause. Was stranded both times. Luckily for me I have never had to use the spare tire, but feel lots safer now.

Brian, great vid. A couple of things, the Y kit uses a T145/85R18 tire. The "T" is a temporary tire, these should never be used for anything other than limping home or to a garage. Modern lists the tire speed rating as 81 mph max, while TireRack says 50 mph max (wonder if Modern has confused the European manufacturers spec sheet showing 81 kph max speed which would be 50 mph)? Modern lists only one size for the Y with a 27.7" rolling diameter. That's an ok match for the "square" 19 or 20 wheel options on the LR and Perf (each has a 27.9" rolling diameter), but it doesn't work with the Perf Upgrade with staggered 21 inch (the rears are a 28.6 rolling diameter). That would have one rear wheel during 20 more revs per mile, and you certainly wouldn't want to do that for long.

@@jayj6770 The lower trunk fits in between the rear bumper and the electric motor/gearbox. There just isn't room to modify that area to accommodate a spare wheel/tire.

My 2004 Corvette Z06 did not come with a spare. Many modern cars do not. It did come with some tire slime sealant and a small air pump. Never had to use it though. My 2021 Chevy Bolt did not come with a spare. But I added a donut spare from a Ford Mustang. The. Added a jack and all needed tools, plus a tire plug kit and two small compressors. I used it once and it worked great. Glad I had it.

Maybe you could add a link for a portable air charger that you like. I would imagine that the spare would need to have it's pressure checked and topped off in a pinch.

It would be more appealing if there was somewhere to actually store the spare, or at least secure it. Otherwise you have a tire slamming around in your trunk all the time, and in the event of an accident it could be a very dangerous projectile.

In the model 3 or model Y it could either be stored in the frunk or the under trunk storage compartment.

Model Y has considerably deeper Frunk and deeper Trunk compartment than model 3. Anyone know if it might fit at an angle? Not efficient but nice to know if it would.

The required 129ft lbs lug torque is 30% more than most people are used to. I'd be concerned most won't have the strength to properly tighten

You need to actually really physically remove the actual deflated (flat) tire. That is the key. How will you fit a 3 1/2" tall emergency scissor jack in the 2 1/2" remaining ground clearance?

I think you're mistaking the bigger wheel in the rear for bigger breaks. I've never see bigger breaks in the rear(physics/inertia). I would assume they would clear the fronts also.

A 135/90-10 would match the Model Y OEM size in diameter but skinny. I don't think that size tire exists however, so to get the diameter right you'd basically need a full size spare. The 135/80-18 is 1.2 inches, 4.5% too small for the Y.

I bought one of these for my M3 last year and keep it in the trunk. Had issues with is sliding around so attached a couple velcro strips on it and now it sticke to the carpet trunk floor lining and does not move. Def saw a couple mile range reduction by having the extra weight. But trade off is peace of mind.

so what happens when you try and drive with a different diameter tire on one side of 1 axle? Are you sure the driveline likes that? and doesnt suffer any damage or trip any malfunction indicators? especially on 2 motor (frt and rear) models?

I did just that on my Chevy Bolt….. put a smaller diameter donut spare on my front drive axle after a tire blew. Car did not like that. All kinds of error messages but driving not affected. What I should ah e done was put the donut on the rear axle and moved a rear tire to the front drive axle and avoided all the errors and dash warning lights. But on a Tesla AWD that’s not possible some both axles are Drive axles. Best solution is a full size spare to avoid and damage to car drive train.

You mean especially the front caliper. Rear brakes are never as large as the front as the front does 80% of the total braking.

I am seeing this video as I have a flat. Frustrating experience knowing teslas don’t have run flat. No standard repair kit with the car. The road side assistance does not work in Sunday’s. I drove my MYLR from Bay Area to San Diego and had a flat in Simi Valley. Any towing option AAA, Geico, tesla roadside will drive you to a tire repair shop. What do you do if it happens at 6 pm like in our case? This spare tire is a must. The last flat I had was 10 years ago but I had a spare. This time it was not fun travelling with my family and the dog. Tesla roadside assistance you let me down. There has to be a 24 hour on-site tire repair service. Without it all the route mapping is pretty much useless.

I get a flat tire maybe once every 5 years, but I still refuse to buy a car that doesn't have a spare. I wish you had tried to fit it into either of the underfloor compartments. Actually, my case, I could probably keep it behind either of the front seats, since I never carry passengers.
