Couple of thoughts: What if you don't drive 15K a year AND you don't sell your car at the end of 5 years? What is the the look and feel of the Lexus vs the Tesla? Say you keep your car for 20 years (as my wife and I do), how do you suppose the interior will hold up? I know how the Lexus interior will hold up (one of the best built cars out there). I know what the average number and a costs of repairs is for a 2001 Lexus. I have no idea what a 20 year old M-Y will look or feel like ... And once out of warranty, the repair costs are pretty intimidating ... A motor replacement or a worst case battery replacement after 8 years could easily erase much of the proposed savings ... I'm not knocking a M-Y or any Tesla, but we have all seen the displays go out on older Model S's, and that associated cost. We have seen out of warranty cost for a rear motor replacement too. Once out of warranty, Tesla's are looking pretty scary. Until we get a better and more competitive parts replacement model for Tesla's, they don't look great for long term ownership ...

Have always updated our Lexus RX models since 2006 as they are the best cars ever but better still is the Lexus service, it really is second to none and here’s why... We live 145km away from the Lexus service and when due they’d make the journey each time (no extra charge) to pick up the car (300km round trip) and leave the brand new latest model as courtesy transport for a day or two... even after the warranty expired?! Comon Lexus we just wish they’d would go electric too as we love their cars... ! But recently we took a friends Model S for a drive and as it so happened we we’re sold on it and we’re now on the Model Y waiting list!! If Tesla adopt the Lexus policy in servicing then it will definitely be game over for many motor companies.

I, too, currently own a 2011 RX450h (it was a CPO on the dealer lot) and absolutely love the car. All my regular servicing was done for free for the first five years and that's the only thing I've had to do for my car. Everything work perfectly, even after 9 years! My previous Lexus RX300 (1999) I owned until 2014 when I bought my 450h. Yes, I need to use premium fuel (and here in Hawaii, it's expensive!) and tires wear out, too. But our electricity costs are the highest in the nation so my cost of ownership (COO) would be higher than on the mainland. Also, there are no service centers here on the Big Island so the car would need to be shipped to Oahu for required service. That would make me nervous since watching countless KZbin vids about Tesla cars show that there are problems with quality control. Does anyone else know what Tesla would do for those who live on an island 167 miles from the nearest service center?

Funny how depreciation values work in the US, here in the UAE, as soon as you put plates on the car it drops 20% regardless of any brand.
@drscrubs4 жыл бұрын
Depreciation is based on demand. If a vehicle model is in high demand and very limited supply, a used car will still go for a high price because people are willing to shell out the money for the vehicle, even if it is used. Vice versa, if there are a lot of a certain model or if that model is significant upgrade every 3 years or so, the used vehicle of that model loses more value as a used car because people will choose to forgo buying the used version of the model to get the new version. Does the UAE force a price drop once a car a is "used". As in the government forces all used car to automatically lose 20% in value no matter how popular or rare the vehicle is?

As an owner of a Lexus 2013 RX-450h and a Model 3 2018, I can say this is an excellent and a very appropriate comparison. The RX has been the best luxury SUV for many years. The Y will dethrone the RX next year, if not this year. The RX is a very good car but it is not a Tesla. M3 and MY are way better. My RX is 7 years old. The GPS has not been upgraded because it cost almost $400,00 to do so! In 18 months, my M3 has improved so much that it has been a new car dozens of times through software updates. The RX is far behind in technology and ultimately, it is more expensive.

Lexus has a stellar reputation for reliability they are experienced at building hybrid vehicles they are excellent. It is quite the opposite for Tesla I have heard horror stories about them they are not built well at all. I find it hilarious that people think they are saving the environment by driving a Tesla yet they pull into a charging station powered by diesel generators.Todays gas powered cars are engineered to run extremely clean they are polluting the environment far less than a diesel powered generator. 🤣🤣🤣

The brainwashing machine is running at full ludicrous + cheetah launch mode. The Tesla still needs brake replacement and service, both cars can brakeregen and they are both around the same weight, so they would need the same service. If i freewheel and engine brake too much in my ICE car, rust will eat up my brakes or make them seize because of low use, the same goes for a always brake regen Tesla, they would need brake service long before the pads wear out. The coolant system in the Tesla Y is much more complicated then a normal ICE car and there is a lot more things to cool or heat up, so this systems needs atleast the same care and service as any other ICE or Hybrid car. I tend to buy used cars that are 10 years old, because I am poor and live in a country with record high car taxes. A out of warranty Tesla would scare the crap out of me because a new battery or motor would force me to throw out the car and if they dont get the coolant system and brakes serviced like any other car, because the customer thinks it is not needed, you are driving in a timebomb. I think the out of warranty value depreciation is going to catch up with the Lexus fast and the overnight depreciation following a over the air update, that limits the supercharger speed if used too much is also going to be a problem. The self driving feature that could disappear when selling the car is also a bit scary, it looks like you need to be famous or important to get it re added again.

Interesting to compare the Y to a non Hybrid regular SUV with much lower initial cost. Hybrid or full electric = higher depreciation especially when older and out of warranty.
@brettbutler67144 жыл бұрын
Very good comprehensive comparison. Some things need to be updated. For example the $800 interior is debatable, because Tesla only offers one and some people view the Tesla interior as behind the others. Also some maintenance cost are rather high or could perhaps be covered under the 4/50k mileage package with Lexus. I have a model 3 and am enjoying it so far but these comparisons should try to stick to as much factual as possible. Like the depreciation, should just have used the model 3 since there is no data. The model Y is going to win in a cost comparison just like model 3 will win in its category because EV's always have the advantage of being more efficient, versus the ICE equivalent.

Assuming an average regular gasoline price of $1.80 per gallon and 30 mpg, I calculate the fuel cost for the Lexus to travel 25 miles as $1.50, not $2.27. This would reduce the Lexus annual fuel cost by about $450, or $2250 over 5 years. The table says "Based on...current fuel/energy prices." Am I missing something?

Always a great video, good job. I am in the market now for a new car. I’ve been practically obsessed with Tesla’s since their beginnings. As much as I want to go all in on Tesla...I’m still struck by some things they lack. I see your comparisons and am curious how a Tesla 3 or Y may compare to say a 3 vs Honda Accord or a Y to a CX5. I’ve test driven and Turo’d S’s and 3’s. Tesla’s are amazing cars and their acceleration is addictive...but the quality and in some ways lack of features seem more in line with those “lower” price of cars. Today’s cars are leaps and bounds better than they were 10 years ago. We can all be thankful for that! Maybe autopilots full self driving could be taken out of the mix too? I am wanting the 3 or the Y but I can’t justify the 8k price as it stands now. Thanks for any consideration to these types of comparisons. Keep up with the great content!

Thanks for the review! It still has not made me decide which vehicle to purchase. I think one thing left out of the review is what you value your life to be. Tesla has had many fatalities in their vehicles and the alarming one was the gentleman that was killed in Mountain View, California when the autopilot steered the vehicle into the freeway barrier and exploded into flames. He survived the accident, but died of burning to death, because the fire department had trouble extinguishing the flames out due to the batteries. I ended up doing research and found out these batteries are difficult to extinguish after an accident when on fire. Lexus has had 0 fatalities with the Rx model. Yes, 0 in the last six years! I'm still stuck! 😑 Should I buy a Tesla with an overall lower cost of ownership and risk being killed if involved in an accident? Or purchase a really expensive Lexus Rx and have a higher probability of surviving the accident without burning to death. 😩 I still like the Tesla though. I'm so unsure... 😏

I've personally seen many videos of Tesla's Autopilot saving people's lives; I'd bet they've prevented many more accidents than they've caused. Especially for SUV's, one of the biggest dangers at high speeds is rollovers. Though the batteries may be problematic when it comes to fires, they help a LOT with preventing rollovers, since the center of gravity is so low. Tesla makes very safe cars that have unmatched official safety ratings.

To me Hybrid cars are just a well concealed gimmick. Or another way for the auto manufacturer to keep the naive motorist under the ICE usage thumb, since they are unable to compete against Tesla pure EV, with a mirage of fuel saving. But when one simply adds up the extra initial cost of an Hybrid over the same car Gas version. and further adds up the extra maintenance costs, due to the fact of its extreme complexity, and the servicing of the ICE plus the EV segment, that will reveal in its entirety far more costly than a gas powered car. If we were to work the math details of the two car version in a space of say 5 years ownership, without any doubt what so ever the Hybrid will reveal itself to have cost at least $12.000 more even taking in account the pittance saving cost of the gasoline. For no other benefits than the illusion of a non existent bargain.

Funny how the most reliable brand is not considered. Tesla is cheap, until someone doesn't hit in to you. Also the second owner has to buy the Autopilot again, right?
