Tesla has pivoted away from their ambitious plans to completely revolutionize the way their next generation of more affordable vehicles will be manufactured, meaning their “unboxed process” won’t be fully implemented just yet. In this video I discuss Tesla’s pivot, why it is actually a good thing and also what Elon said about other new Tesla vehicles coming soon!

Tesla just launched their best Model 3 Performance yet, and I have to say as compared to other performance vehicles on the market, the Model 3 clearly gives you the most bang for your buck. But, Tesla offers another amazing performance EV, the PLAID MODEL S as well! In this video I compare the all-new Performance Model 3 to the Plaid Model S to determine if the Model S is worth the extra price.

I dont want a glass roof or crazy acceleration. I dont care about lower cost interior materials. I just want a car with a decent range and smaller than model 3. The only thing I expect are no compromises on the software capabilities. In Europe, the Fiat 500 EV has been a bestseller despite bad specs and relatevely high cost. But it is one of the few EVs with small dimensions. Tesla should be able to produce such a car at significantly lower cost than the model 3.

IIRC, Elon said on the Q1 conference call that Tesla was still going to use the new "unboxed" assembly process for the robotaxi, or "CyberCab," to be revealed on 8/8. Also, at the end of the call, Lars ticked off a list of 4 or 5 technologies from the "$25k car" that would be used in the new models that would be built on existing assembly lines. IIRC, It included things like 48 V, rare earth free magnets, 75% less SiC, etc.

Uber's 5million drivers make in average 30 revenue generating miles per day. If you replace each driver with robotaxi and charge 1 Dollar per mile you have just 12000 dollars revenue per year, but you have to built 5 million robotaxis. Uber drivers make sure the car stays clean inside throughout the day. Thats a minor Detail, but how will robotaxi do it? Just asking. The whole Business Model is not thought through.

Much easier to introduce "unboxed" in a new factory rather than shutting down existing lines to introduce radical change. On the other hand, there is also the balance between capital cost i.e. new factory build-out vs. current account costs such as COGS. The key issue in all of this is demand - if it weakens then it makes sense to delay the build-out and suffer higher COGS in the short term until demand picks up. A second issue is the natural desire to drive to launch lower cost vehicles to increase access to market demand - cutting across this is the expectation that FSD/Autonomy will increase vehicle utilisation and thus reduce unit demand. If you pull forward expectations for FSD you cut the ground underneath the need to support ever higher demand for low cost vehicles.

Their new unboxed process was a genius move and now when it's scrapped it's also a genius move? Maybe it was just announced 5 years too early? The amount of early promises and bluff from that company when stock is under pressure is ridiculous.

I think Tesla will use powder coating instead of paint for the next generation vehicles. Powder coating doesn’t dry up and clog, the excess powder that doesn’t adhere can be re-used. They will assemble the doors, hood and trunk before fitting onto the vehicle-not fitting them, then painting, removing, assembling and finally reinstalling. FSD was originally derived from the factory; Tesla may be able to use end to end neural networks to train the new assembly line. The assembly line could be able to autonomously call for things like the W.OW. to change out a storage trailer, order parts and detect bottlenecks long before humans can detect them.

5:40 Re Model Y having front and rear giga-castings, is that true for both Fremont and Austin-built Model Ys? Also, I thought the use of giga-castings in the Model Y also required the structural battery pack (4680-based). If true, then is the Model Y with 2170 cells using front and rear giga-castings?

Yes, Tesla said the “Cyber Cab” will be made with the unboxed process. Casting the BIW in one piece is not comparable with the unboxed process, since it requires separate pieces. Not surprising that Tesla cancelled the one-piece casting after finding a better way to reduce costs.

8:50 No, that's incorrect. The robotaxi is on the next gen platform, the low cost compact crossover will be on the 3/Y platform with some of the next gen platform cost reduction measures that can be applied to existing lines.

I think it is wise for Tesla to delay implementation of new factories using the complete unboxed process. I suspect Tesla either has 1st class economists on staff or via 3rd party consult. Those economists told Elon that a global recession is coming, USA included. Thus, vehicle demand will be less for the near to mid term. This is why Tesla will introduce next-gen tech on existing lines slowly. They'll still be able to produce a low cost robo-taxi and compact efficiently with a relatively low CAPEX commensurate with a recession. One more thing: if the robo-taxi deployment is successful, it alone will reduce demand for human-controllable cars over time.

I am expecting a Modified Model Y with additional features to adapt for RoboTaxi and delivery vans. Powerdoors so if a passenger exits and does not close door which would leave car inoperable Additional internal cameras for security Front camera or possibly front corner cameras allowing vehicle to see when pulling out of blind spots Remote capable software to allow for support in case some unforeseen issue requires operator intervention at least for a few years Modified external door handles to make it obvious how to enter vehicle A cargo/light work van style body with power outlets suitable for 120 volt power tool charging

Elon did the right move. Rushing the model 2 and spending billions on new gigafactories in a saturated over supplies market would just burn cash and cannibalize on the model Y and model 3 and over supply the market even more. It would be better to improve and lower manufacturing costs on existing productions lines.

You seemed to imply that the Austin built Model Y Long Range with 2170 cells have Giga castings on the front and rear? I was under the impression that the Austin built 2170 Model Y did not have front Giga casting and the 4680 Model Y had front and rear Giga castings. Please inform me of your sources for which cars currently have front and rear Giga castings from Austin.

What might help with Giga Mexico if that be the plan is to move the now probably very well used production systems from Freemont into Mexico for Model 3 and Model Y and move new "alien dreadnought" equipment into Freemont possibly to produce Model S, Model X and Next Gen. This new tooling could indeed be far more efficient but also more robust and much more precise thus improving initial build quality by an order of magnitude the latter of which is where the money shot be had as then servicing costs can drop something which remains a big time drain on Tesla with Cybertruck at the moment and despite what I would regard as a successful launch anyways. Rivian and Ford clearly understand battery electric trucks better as they understand/understood full size trucks going into this better. Both Ford and Rivian are still planning on standing up brand new production as well with Rivian even getting a massive check from the State of Illinois for expansion and early rollout of R2. The Rivian R2 might be the first to steal a march on Tesla getting to pocket rocket battery electrics first and possibly hitting the "downsizing wave" going on in the current US vehicle market mix where Toyota Corollas, Honda Civics and Ford Mavericks are suddenly all the rage. Starting to see visual confirmation that battery electrics are becoming a common occurrence here on the US Eastern Seaboard as well and not just Teslas but Riviians, Fords, Hyundais even a Lucid. Golf carts are still totally so not worth it tho 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Europe is worse than that. Where can robotaxis draw their income? Especially when you have quite a few robotaxis companies. Robotaxis would not work in SE Asia, 90% population use mopeds or motorcycles. Be real would you.

Anytime Elon pivots to some wild unhinged move nobody understands, the rhetoric is always "I think its a good move." Maybe if more people actually criticized him and called out his BS he would knock it off. On the other hand. At this point the only reason and I mean the only reason to invest in Tesla is he just monopolized his charging network. It hurts vehicle corporations not a Tesla owner. So far government hasn't cut his free money in the form of carbon credits to sell. I dont believe it is unfair to be a fierce competitor. He may have just given other vehicle manufacturers enough rope to hang themselves with. When he said GFY I think this was the plan all along. I may be underestimating Elon Musk.

Truly, Elon is a genius! A year ago he made some rather clear statements about what he intended to do. Now that it is clear that he failed at doing those things, he has learned in his genius way to make a whole bunch of confusing and vague statements about what’s coming, and to imply a whole bunch of possible things so that he can get a bump in his stock price because obviously the future is so bright and yet there’s nothing really concrete in what he said that people can hold him to in the future. This is pure genius! His statements are so vague, his promises are so wishy-washy that it will be very difficult for shareholders to bring a successful lawsuit. And at the end of the day, it all about funneling more money to Elon in ways that he can’t be held responsible for?
