Tesla Powerwall 2 - Completely Off Grid System

This specially designed off-grid system was installed in Cannons Creek in the scenic rim region of Queensland and is the first stage of a project Springers Solar will manage, moving this home to complete self-sustainability.
The customer approached Springers Solar before building their energy-efficient holiday home not wanting a large space occupied by a battery bank, they required the tidiest set up possible.
So far, Springers Solar has installed 22 Winaico 325W Full Black Modules, each panel is fitted with a SolarEdge DC Optimizer and the entire system is managed by a SolarEdge 6kW HD Wave Inverter. Springers Solar have also installed 2 Powerwall units and a generator.
The property has a tablet installed for on-site monitoring at any time, all components used have offsite monitoring capabilities, easily accessed from anywhere in Australia.
Once completed, this system will double in size, with 2 more batteries and 22 more panels booked for installation when the remainder of the property has been built.
Due to the location and cost of grid establishment, this customer needed complete off-grid functionality, installing a generator was essential to operate as a back-up power supply for the Solar Modules and Powerwall units.

I live off grid using 2 solar panels and a wind generator. Your system needs a wind generator. On days of low solar it's often windy. Lots of energy storage also enables getting through low solar weather. Cheers Gray Australia

Will the generator charge the Tesla Powerwalls when they get too low? Or will the Powerwalls only be able to charge from the Solar system

We have had the Same problem in New Zealand when power cut happens Tesla takes over but when repair men arrive with a large generator the power wall closes down even with power in it as the system cannot take a power supply that has fluctuations in its supply to grid.So have to wait till generator shuts down and power is converted back to grid for powerwall to go back to work.

Hi Watson, that's correct the generator runs as the backup power supply to the batteries. When the solar is not producing energy and the batteries are flat, the generator will charge the batteries so the generator runs for the shortest time possible.

@@springers Must be a different frequency than in the United States. Here Tesla won’t allow generators to directly charge the batteries.

Hi Springers Solar. We are installers out in Maui, Hawaii and someone contacted us with a Powerwall 2AC/SolarEdge HD Wave system that is completely off grid and not working. The Powerwall or Inverter keeps turning each other off, I suspect through frequency shift. Do you have any recommendation for a solution? The homeowner is willing to invest in getting the system working, but I would love to keep either the SolarEdge inverter or Powerwall 2AC to keep his system costs down. Do you know of any inverters that would AC couple with a Powerwall 2AC in an off-grid setup? There is no utility power on site. Any ideas you have would be great, hope y'all are doing well!

The Powerwalls can only allow 7.6 kW of solar each; presently. Rumors are that there is a software update coming that will allow a 50 % increase the kW capacity.
