I hope he use 3 dimensional tesla valve arranged in spiral since he is using 3d printer but not CNC carving machine. More valve unit per length! Otherwise, too long valve section will get soaked with CO2 pretty fast. And he gotta test the pressure loss than speed loss.

As a tip for the future, if you are going to make another pulse jet engine, and you don't want it melt, try making it out of some sort of ceramic material. Making a ceramic engine probably won't be easy, but I don't think it will be as expensive as trying to make the engine out of metal.
@jtjames79

Old space heaters used to be made out of almost entirely ceramic. If you could find one it might make a good combustion chamber.

Awesome. You should consider the effect of the Reynolds number in the valve. Fluid mechanics is not insensitive to scale and the Reynolds number is the first place to look. It seems to me you need to be in the turbulent regime, Re > 3000, so that turbulence creates resistance to the flow. As a rule of thumb, the more viscous the fluid, the bigger the channels need to be.

if you're using a tesla valve in 3 dimentions really you make a tube and have a series of coniical baffles inside the tube and the cones point the direction you want flow, this works better as it gives a more even 3D flow

@@BoldUniverse I am pretty confident that is incorrect. Conical baffles would obstruct the flow,, but they don't redirect it against the incoming flow like Tesla's design does. That's the genius of his design.

1- make a presurre diferential gauge to measure the pressure drop on the valve: simple U before the valve with some transparent hose and fill some of it with oil or water. the diference in height will give you the amount of restriction. to best result regulate the air flow with the reverse valve until you have a 'good height', shut-off, swich the valve to 'open' and compare heights. 2- to the engine itself: since it is stationary there is no 'forced' airflow in the intake like would be in a 'v1' intake. Making the intake duct longer would benefit the overal output by letting the air develop some inertia and 'ram' (like a ram pump) into the combustion chamber. also might help putting some distance between the combustion chamber and the valve: the presure rise in this 'pre-chamber' might help dampen the blowback and push spent gases out. like old Garelli 2stroke engines you will be looking for a ressonant state between intake and output. might be usefull to study some acoustics and chamber chape and volume. if you want to discuss anything feel free to call in private.

You got some good points. Also you might consider a conventional flap valve in front of the Tesla valve. Tesla valve with active safety protecting the flap valve. Also make the valve a 3D object made of rings with arms the same shape in profile as the tear drops that make up the valve.

I did some sketches, it's really difficult to make the path in 3D with continuous rotational symmetry in the axis of flow. What might work better is use the path the valve traces when rotated 180° in it's flow axis

To make sure your real life testing is accurate enough, the most important thing to pay attention to is the Reynold's number of the fluid in the conduit. A slow flowing liquid can achieve the same Reynold's number as fast moving air. It's called (no surprise) Reynold's number matching and is used to test planes and shit.

I have a few ideas for a new version of a pulse engine: 1. You can use water which is between two walls to prevent the plasic from melting. 2. The second is to cover the engine with aluminium foil and some isolating materials. 3. I think a 3 dimensional tesla valve would fit better.

When I watched the video and you started testing those narrow channel valves with paint, I immediately thought that the viscosity of the paint would play way too big a role - you would need much wider channels to get a useful test for that fluid. Luckily you caught the error in your ways yourself - good job, and thanks for sharing the video. It's the best I've seen from you so far. 👍

The performance of the valve can be different when you make it larger because the flow can shear-driven or pressure-driven, dependent on the relation between the viscosity of the fluid and the size of the channels. Also, the viscosity varies with temperature.

To help with the overheating issues on the 3D printed pulsejet, try taking a page out of the NASA book, and build cooling coils/channels into the chamber that you can circulate fuel (or simple water if using a gaseous fuel) through to help get the fuel to the proper temps before combustion.

About the simulation: the mass flow must stay constant unless it dissapeared. So the velocity won't be much different, but what you're really looking for is pressure drop, which is basically a measure of resistance for the flow

A good way to measure the efficacy of a seal for gases is a leak down test. Used commonly in internal combustion engines to check leakage rates in the engine, you could use the same method to measure the difference in flow (pressure) for each direction of the tesla valve. Basically you feed the valve steady pressure, and a second gauge measures actual pressure in the chamber. The difference in the readings between the two gauges (pressure fed and pressure actual) tells you how bad the leak is. The closer the actual pressure is to the fed pressure, the better the seal is. If the tesla valve works, you'll note a difference between 1 direction over the other. The nice part about the leak down test method, is you can vary the pressure you're sending to the valve and test it at different pressure levels to see if the efficacy of the valve is better or worse at higher pressures.
