I work for an airline, and in the employee parking lot, there are 14 Chargepoint chargers. There are pilots and flight attendants who leave their cars there for 2-4 day trips, sitting needlessly on the charger. Other employees have plug in hybrids that take only 1-2 hours maximum to charge. We desperately need more charging since all the chargers are always occupied, and I rarely get to charge at work. I’ve suggested installing many 110v outlets for the employees who park for 2-4 days typically.

@@gregcollins3404 I’m sure some parking lots have a few outlets here or there, but I hope that airports start installing 110v outlets specifically for electric cars. Great for super slow charging when the car is parked and plugged in for 2+ days! If I find a random outlet in a parking lot, I don’t think I would use it because it could be seen as stealing power, and the outlet wasn’t put there to charge cars with.

Too many people still reasoning in fossil mode, convinced that speed of charge must be as high as possible always. Actually, given that cars stay parked for 90 and more percent of their life, slow and ultra low charging should be dominant. Also, in airports, there should be a valet service that moves the car around. Ideally, you would want to have it charged slowly and only at the last moment, just in time for your scheduled arrival.

"Destination Charging" basically means overnight charging for me. The big benefit of a dynamic load management system is that 30+ cars can be connected to a "weak" power source and still all cars will be fully charged in the morning. Without the load management system somebody would need to watch and connect one car after the other, all night long...

So far as I know the 80% derating does not apply to the OCPD (AKA breaker.) In a case where a 200 Amp panel is split evenly to 30 cars each car would pull about 6.7 Amps. That is better than nothing, or having to come back to the car when a spot with an EVSE opens up. It gets even better though: as cars reduce their demand or pull away, the panel dynamically allocates up to its maximum Amps to the cars asking for a charge. GREAT stuff

Just came across this great talk. I just got Tesla MYLR, and now learning the basic principles of charging EV, and terminology: KW, kwH. Volt. amp etc. One burning question I have regarding charging EV is that do I need to charge my EV at home every day, even I only drive 25 km / day, and my battery is still showing, let's say 60% left. I was told that charging battery every night is good to preserve battery, and avoid faster battery degradation. Is that true??

I believe Tesla recommends charging daily. We charge our Y every night to 85%. But I can’t imagine that skipping a daily charge every now and then would be that big of a deal. I suppose I’d be more concerned about fast DC charging when it comes to battery degradation, especially if that was my primary source of charging.

I have owned Model S(s) since 2015 and have never had the need to instal any charging equipment at home (and I have changed homes twice in this time). Not even a 240V outlet. I have always used regular 110V outlets. I plug in every time I park at home. On most days my overnight charge puts on more miles than I had used during the day, and my battery level is higher (or full) each morning. So while I don't have a full battery every day it is a rare occurrence (maybe once a month) that I have to visit a supercharger other than while on a trip. Don't rush to buy even a 240V outlet, let alone a charger. I do carry extension cables and adapters for use at camping and RV sites.

@@peterbroadbent8270 We could probably do the same, but we have solar PV, so we like to plug in when the sun is shining. Our PV array does up to 7 kW peak output, so the 240V outlet takes full advantage of that. Mostly it is my wife's X that we plug in. I charge my Y at work for free, or on sunny days when I'm home. We don't have net metering with our utility, and the utility only pays 3 cents per kWh for any extra energy we send back out to the grid. So, it makes sense to use it or loose it.

All well and good, but destination chargers in the UK are hopeless. Most can only be used by patrons and worse, we have seen a lot of hotels and garages not allow them to be used at all unless you have a season parking ticket for the garage, or are staying in the hotel. Twice we have booked coffees / lunch thinking we could charge whilst we waited and were told we couldn’’t. It is getting to be such a problem, we now avoid destination chargers entirely, which makes travelling more stressful to new areas. It’s a shame but I think that owners who have benefitted from the Tesla incentive are now no longer following the spirit of the scheme. Before we get criticised, yes, we are happy to pay for the charge too - we are not expecting to get subsidised or free charging, but the chargers are not set up to be able to deal with that.
@glassdomedesign
@glassdomedesign 2 жыл бұрын
One solution would be to colour code the destination chargers on the Tesla app to show: private and not available for drive up charging, public and available for guests with a minimum spend of £x or charge of £y, public and free to patrons. Of course, out of order too - the number of destination chargers we have been to that don’t even work as they are turned off, or are padlocked, it is not even funny.

I plug in my car at night and set it to 80% and everyday it's way more than what I need. Sometimes we go 120 miles round trip and we do that twice a day and still have like 20 percent with me driving the car completely like a savage. 50% is overkill. Anything between 30% and 80% will have basically the same lifespan. I would go with 80% so that the car is ready to go on an unexpected long trip if needed.

Because Tesla created the first DC fast charging standard, offered to share the technology/infrastructure, and then all the legacy auto manufacturers ignored it and created two more competing standards. You can thank legacy auto for screwing that up.

@Joseph Barletta, PLEASE I BEG you to talk to Royal Farms in Maryland. They have allowed their ChasrgePoint charging network stations to all fail and have completely walked away from the EV community! They have no intention on fixing the failing stations! I have a Tesla powered 2013 Toyota RAV 4 EV with a JDEMO ChaDEMO connector installed and relie on Royal Farms network to make it to ocean city. now without their network it's nearly impossible to get there! Someone needs to wake them up. They took their grant money and ran! Maybe you can talk to the Maryland Public commision or Maryland department of Energy to get some traction on this!

That is a big fear: people take grant money then never care about it again. Would be worse than nothing: costs money and bad for EV adoption/use/image

@@tedmoss Sure I overall agree that Tesla is the best EV option but the real issue at hand is the potential waste of ~$7.5B of taxpayer money. It could go to a decent public good (arguably) or be utterly wasted (inarguably)

Guys… I want a charger unit for EVERY car spot in our condo. We have 400 units. Each unit owner owns a parking space. We can charge the owner for the unit the fee for the charger. It doesn’t need to be a super fast charger. It simply needs to charge over night. It’s my home. And, it needs to be smart card ready so the owner can buy the electric. It can be small! Like what I would charge in my house. Or 10kw so I can charge an 80kw battery in 8 hours.. It is my house. We need 400 3kW chargers. Or 10kw around? Tiny. Small. Overnight charging. Not a line of people waiting. EVERY CAR will be electric. I want the @home experience even though I’m in a condo.

This "EV Infrastructure Bill" worth BILLIONS is reminiscent of the 1930's when Congress approved a multi-million dollar Gas Station Construction Bill. WTF - Big Oil can and SHOULD profit from EV charging by PAYING for EV charge stations. Why are Tax Payers GIVING AWAY money to build free "Electric Gas Stations" for the operators to PROFIT FROM ? ! GAWD people are STUPID.

So I have a tesla wall charger i plug into a 50amp circuit, it draws 80% so 40 amps, about 48 km an hour. Is getting a wall mounted charger going to do anything? Would I have to have dual chargers? I don't even know what that means, my Tesla is a 75D model S from 2016 AP1 but refreshed face (so sep 2016 built, bought it Dec 30th 2016) Now it doesn't really matter, even my first adapter drew 32 watts (some other province limited it to 32 so all of canada gets the 32, I bought a US one so i can get 40) I plug in and forget right, so is there ANY point to the wall mounted charger?

How does Tesla make money by providing Level 2 general purpose chargers in parking lots and building garages?
@memeluke
@memeluke 2 жыл бұрын
These are just level 2 chargers (not superchargers) and from what I can tell they don’t make any money from them yet. I think for this to be sustainable and wide spread they need to software unlock the ability to bill for electricity used. Many businesses and local governments would love to put them in but aren’t allowed to give away electricity.

Help!! - I’m trying to figure out how I will charge while at college in a nursing program - I’ll be living in a dorm in a city that has NO charging station. The closest charging station is 48 min away. I truly have no idea what I am going to do. I will be driving a lot as the program I am in requires me to drive from Lake Havasu to Phoenix AZ and back monthly on top of driving to clinicals weekly. Does anyone know how I can charge in Lake Havasu?? I’m desperate. Thank you

Great information. I don't understand why people want chargers at their work. Just charge your car at night while your sleeping. Evs have similar range as cars. You don't have gas stations at work. Restaurants have chargers but why, like you show up without enough charge to make it home? Doesn't make sense to me at least.

There is a large population of people who do not have access to electricity where they park, such as condos, apartments, or houses with only street parking. The electrification of those places isn't necessarily easy, especially if you are not the owner. Destination chargers at places of work enable electric vehicles for those people. Without that infrastructure, EVs are not very attractive.

Three scenarios. Firstly, staff who don't have good charging at home. Work charging is a good bonus for them. Secondly, if you are driving for work and come back to resupply in the middle of the day, you can charge. Finally, many companies have work vehicles that live at work.

Some people live in apartments or condos that don't have charging. Work is where most people spend most of their time outside of their home. So being able to charge at work is a nice perk for those people.

I would use a level 1 charger at work when below zero in the winter just to keep battery conditioned. Other than that don’t need unless people don’t have a garage at home to charge.

How and Who's going to pay the Road Tax!! For the upkeep of Our Roads? With the Gas Tax It was a fair way to collect the tax. I'm not looking forward to this. Right now it looks like one big tax once a year on mileage. But I haven't heard it discussed yet!

Tell us about the source of the power, If millions of cars hit the streets where will the energy be produced? Do you have any information about what the US is doing to produce power? Nuclear? Coal? Fossil Fuel? Renewables can or cannot keep pace with EV sales. What do you think will happen if everyone (Millions)go electric and plugs in Every night. Do you have more information about the ramp up of electrical production? Will the cost of a KWH be more than a barrel of oil in 5 years? There are 2 ends to every wire. Will the lights go out state by state?
