This reminds me of how the space station has most appliances soft mounted, to avoid large scale harmonics that can fatigue structural joints. Does this have anything to do with the smaller inductor in the plaid inverter, reducing Eddie currents on the ferromagnetic core by using a heavily segmented core while improving the impedance?

No, adding weight is not required for a servo drive, it just needs to be tuned properly to the load.

@@Johnny2Feathers The car is fantastic. Plenty of power. In fact, I don't use the most powerful mode in the car, insane mode, as it just isn't needed. I have no major issues with the car. However, I have significantly scratched the undercarriage beneath the front bumper by hitting driveways. I learned the hard way that the car defaults to the lowest suspension, leading to these altercations. Fortunately, you can change the clearance on the touchscreen and also set the car to increase clearance automatically when approaching places you know are an issue. Just another benefit of the software-enabled vehicle.

I've recently paid extra attention to how I use the round steering wheel in my vehicles. As do many people after making a tight turn I let the steering wheel slide through my hand. That can't be done with a yoke style. It's interesting to note that many new airplane designs eliminate the yoke, replacing it with a "stick". Yokes are going out of style.

But it's just a suboptimal design (if you still have to rotate it the same 1.5 turns each side) - you can adjust to it but why do that if a better alternative already exists. I like my new Model X but I refuse to believe the yoke is good for me as a consumer, I feel like I'm being beta-tested on.

Who'da thought steering wheels/yokes could be so fascinating? Excellent relaxed but detailed presentation. One thing - steer by wire. I believe that, at the moment, there is a stipulation, law, requirement, whatever, that there be a working physical connection between the steering mechanism and the wheels. This may not be so in the USA, I don't know, but I believe it is in the UK/Europe. So you could have steer by wire but, at present, it has to be backed up by a working column [I think]. Sorry to be so woolly on that point.

I agree with the steer by wire theory and the thermal storage. Tesla love multi purpose parts after all. Though as you stated, the steering yolk was one of the lightest steering wheels you've come across. It could also serve the same effect as a fly-wheel, for feed back in the steering wheel, maybe? ..though an interesting feature for the Cybertruck could be rumblers in the steering wheel for feedback when creeping over terrain or when you're getting closer to an object?

There is another possibility for the iron bars, and the way to find out would be to see if the power source is AC or DC. If it is AC, they could be using inductive heating instead of resistance heating. It is more efficient, and would avoid thermal stress on the wires, and also allow for precise temperature control of the steering yoke.
@georgepelton5645

Sounds like an idea that engineers very familiar with electromagnetic fields and electric motor design would come up with. Logical for a company like Tesla.
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 2 жыл бұрын
There's no need for AC. Induction doesn't make sense since the metal core is heavily insulated. If they wanted to use induction, which is not as efficient as far as power consumption, they would wrap the wire grid around the steel. As is, its too far away reducing efficiency even more. Its almost certainly using DC.

Just pulling out two more ideas about the weights: the segmented nature could provide a predictable fracture in case of a crash. Or it could be used to shift some resonation frequencies that would be annoying for the hand. I've driven some cars that have a really annoying "buzz" in the steering wheel when driven over certain potholes, like using the hammer on a piece of steel.

Using my chevy volt which I drive with openpilot, I wish all buttons you would use and a brake would be completely accessible with one hand. On the volt, I can do turn signals, increase or decrease speed in 1 mph increments when cruise is on, enable cruise, and use the handbrake(regen only). The only time I have to touch any pedals is to get up to 24mph because they suck and don't let cruise enable at zero mph. Once I can enable cruise, i can do all driving with my left hand. I only have to touch a pedal if I need to brake harder than the regen which isn't often. It is no pedal driving and much better than one pedal driving. With openpilot, the car does most of the steering when the cruise is on. I only need to do the turns. Openpilot handles all straightaways and curves on any road, no goofy geofencing like supercruise. If the car could enable cruise at 0mph, it would be a fully digital controlled throttle using plus minus buttons like you are setting a home thermostat. It is so much better than a pedal.

Why would they have seperate pieces of steel bar rather one continuous piece? I like your theories(weight savings,etc), but mine is more fun! Let's see, if we take a steel bar and wrap it in copper and then put a current through it........ What do we make? An electromagnet! And when the first few steering wheels were made this way with a single piece of steel, imagine the surprise of the testers when their watches and jewelry and zippers went..... schwing!.... onto the wheel when the resistive steering wheel heater kicked on!
@andrasbiro3007
@andrasbiro3007 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about that too. But then why using steel at all? Maybe they do want some induction happen to get a more even heating. The problem with the heated steering wheel in my Model S is that the heat is very uneven, which is uncomfortable. All of this complexity seems to be aimed at getting more even heating. Starting with putting the wires below a layer of plastic.
@bitwise_8953

If its a AC you wont make a strong electromagnet, You'll make a lot of heat instead. No need to worry about watches sticking to the wheel.
@ch4.hayabusa

You don't have the amount of windings needed to have a noticeable effect. I think the heat sink idea is correct, which makes sense when heating from mains, but makes even more sense when dumping excess Regen power into the steel. This may be specially true when it's cold in the morning and you live in a community with speed bumps, you'd like Regen to feel the same even when the battery is at 90% charge.

I like the idea of the steel bar being in the steering wheel to hold heat. It makes a lot of sense that the car can heat up the steering wheel (and the rest of the car) while on grid power and store that heat in the wheel to use less electricity while on the road.

The heated steering wheel on my 2022 MiC Model 3 RWD modulates the heat as you were theorising the plaid does. Sometimes I actually find it gets a little bit too cold before reheating again, hopefully something that Tesla tunes with software.

Can you guys buy a current steering wheel from the 3/Y to dig into the heating elements and if the structure itself has changed? that could help answer some of the questions.

Could the steel segments be for heating the yoke by induction? Did you see what kind of power was going through the heater wires - voltage, AC or DC? Maybe a way to keep the heating current low without high voltage. Otherwise the segments would add some strength but also make the yoke deformable in a crash situation.
