If English is their only language, that's shocking but doesn't surprise me with Americans (US citizens, not Canadians who are better travelled, or Mexicans or anyone further south). I got asked if I was Australian a couple of times when I went there in 2000. I'm as English as they come, and don't even have a weird, provincial accent.

Sam, 2 things you can and should do in a Tesla to improve your free autopilot experience drastically: 1. You don’t need to turn the steering wheel when it asks you. You can just use the scroll wheel on the steering wheel and just turn it a click up or down. It’s much easier. 2. Put on sunglasses when it’s not too dark out and the car will stop bothering you as often to turn the steering wheel or a scroll wheel. I guess the inside camera that’s watching you pay attention can’t discern as well when you wear glasses

Driving the Tesla Model 3 Highland 2,000 miles was a game-changer for me, and it made me reflect on how working with a financial advisor can play a key role in achieving big financial goals, like being able to afford such a car. Just like the smooth, efficient performance of the Tesla, a good advisor helps streamline your financial journey.

I do agree that anyone looking to buy a new EV should ensure they can get onto Tesla as soon as possible if they intend to roadtrip. I charge at home 98% of the time so it's not a big deal for me, and by Jan 2026 literally every new EV will have NACS and Supercharger support. I think 2026 is going to be the year for EVs to really shine: lowered interest rates, thousands more charging spots, lots more options for cars, all will have NACS, and possibly some new battery tech for better range or durability. I've had mine for exactly a month, and my daily commute is about 65 miles or 105 kilometers round-trip. That means I only have to use Superchargers on long trips, as my home charger adds 5miles of range per hour, and I can usually charge for about 14 hours per day. It is smooth, autopilot is nice when you want it, and the regular (non-autopilot) cruise control is adaptive and you can adjust the maximum with the right scroll wheel. Love it so far.

People who comment on the screen for checking the speed limit have never driven the car. It is actually safer. On my model Y you actually look down not as far as the height of where the speed is located is substantially above a normal dash and you are looking right into the middle of the windshield when you glance. Sam, been watching for years. Glad you enjoyed California. Regarding autopilot’s nag. There is an alternative that works in my 2021 M3 SR+ that is universal. My steering wheel has left and right scroll wheels. The right wheel is used to raise or lower the max speed. If you merely, scroll up or down on the right wheel, AP knows your still alert ending the nag. I used to jiggle the steering wheel as you mentioned and it kicked me out of AP. This right scroll wheel also worked in FSD (supervised) until camera based monitoring of driver was required.

What goes on in between the front and rear can either be a 2 seater Robotaxi or a 4 or 5 seater Model 2.5 depending on the demand. So the drivable car will be produced right along side the Robotaxi. Go Sam. I’m a Melbourne-based, Model 3 LR Highland owner; delivered in May. We updated from the ‘21 version of the same Model 3, specifically to drive the new car on a “bucket-list” around Australia Lap (16,500km), which we did in July and August. I adore the car, and in general, I agree with all your positives, although I don’t have your experience with other cars to judge your “wafty at high speed” negative comment. My biggest peeve was the move of gear selection from a stalk to the screen. You may not have had my experience when driving a LHD version, but I am strongly right-handed, and in RHD, flicking from Forward to Reverse is far from intuitive using my wrong hand. I totally fixed this by investing in a S3XY Button, which I installed in the centre of the horn dedicated to switching F/R (it has a much lighter press than the horn) so it now remains accessible at all times. It works well, and I’m totally used to it now. Another (minor?) peeve is to move to the wheel of turn indicators; selecting them now often involves working out how the wheel is oriented, which while turning in a round-about can be challenging. After our 16,500km in 2 months odyssey, I still absolutely adore the car. And our dogs adore the Dog Mode too. BTW, I indulged in “Enhanced Autopilot” thinking that having the car automatically navigate would be really nifty in unfamiliar territory - but don’t bother. First, it only works on super-freeways, and on 95% of our trip, it refused to even engage. When it was engaged, I found it tended to change lanes inappropriately, being much too keen to get out of the fast lane, when any driver could easily see that there was more slow traffic still to be passed. It warns that it is about to change lanes, but I was constantly countermanding its intentions. PlugShare was essential, once we got out of the Supercharger network, and there was some forethought needed, but plenty of options, mostly. Our longest leg was 517km, with 67km left on the clock; all at highway speeds. We encountered a guy from TOCWA (Tesla Owners Club of WA) at a charger in Balladonia, and we are now “officially” the 38th known by them to have circumnavigated the country in a BEV; while our dogs are the 1st!

All of the quirks we get with the free autopilot are fixed with FSD from what I have seen. We just need politicians to fix our laws to allow FSD to be used. I also used to want Apple Car Play but the Tesla offers access to many things such as music, podcasts as well as syncing messages and calendar. Using the Tesal screen for navigation is simple and ensures the car can precondition the battery. I have used this a few times and never stopped for more than 15 minutes before we could continue the journey.

I am not sure how you could learn to speak "American" more clearly. I understand you much more easily than I do, than many of the people here from some other parts of our country. LOL I am really happy that you enjoyed your time in my country. Keep on doing what you do Sam, you are a change for good.

In the US we just call "American football" "football" .... like in France they call French bread "bread". LOL

I live in Orange County too-it's a shame I didn’t get the chance to meet you and your family. You did a great job explaining why we switched both our cars to Tesla (even if they are not perfect). It can be hard for some people in Europe to understand, but there's truly nothing more convenient than a Tesla around here for all the reasons you mentioned. We have zero range anxiety, even with our frequent trips to San Diego, Mammoth ski resorts, and as far as San Francisco. (After all these years here, being originally from France, I still find a few people who don’t quite understand me because of my accent-though I’m starting to think maybe they just don’t want to 😉) Your channel is incredible and definitely my favorite for everything related to electric cars! Thank you for providing us with your unbiased comments, reviews, and instructive videos.

I'm glad you realize Autopilot is way different than FSD. Many people who haven't used FSD simply think they are both the same thing...and there is no way to convince them otherwise. Especially when there are Autopilot accidents being blamed as FSD.

I've had a Model 3 Long Range for over a year and so much of what you say resonates with me. It's a great long-distance car; it's incredibly easy to live with; the SatNav is unsurpassed and - yes - charging is intuitive and integrated brilliantly into the navigation system. The other thing you said is that there's no need for another screen. Every first-time journalist driver seems to say it ought to have a head-up display, but I find the speedo reading is actually easier to see than on other cars, where I have to peer down into a gap in the steering wheel at a dial with a few numbers around the edge. My car has stiffer suspension than the one in your video (it's a UK model and pre- Highland facelift) and I haven't experienced the ride/handling issue you described. What I have noticed is how much more responsive the traction control system is compared to ICE cars. It makes me smile when I read negative comments from people who have never driven one, or who regurgitate the usual myths and negatives.

Hi Sam, love the show keep up the good work. For stop start traffic on the freeway I put into chill mode and maybe adjust the distance to the car in front (I usually keep on 2 which is minimum and then adjust to 3 or 4). cheers.

I have 2021 M3 . Love it to bits. Your review is spot on: Software is brilliant with seamless integration with iPhone. Note I use my own Spotify account for music and podcasts. The only EV I would take on a road trip for the reasons you mention. My only complaint is the suspension is a bit harsh. Yes Auto pilot is not the finished product and you have to work within its limitations and enjoy the development.

Another great video, Sam. I live in California and appreciate your Australian accent. As for the M3, I drove one for two weeks while my '22 Ford Mach-e was getting body work done. I hated it. The car felt cheap, was loud, and did not have CarPlay. I'm happy people are buying EV's but the Model 3 is not a good car. The Model S is much better.

another great video.Glad you mostly enjoyed your time here.Yeah I had the same impression as you when i got my M3 this year.I went from a gas stick shift to the tesla and was blown away.I do wish she had more choices with other brands coming from china and Europe but with we have to work with what we got.

You can satisfy the "touch the wheel" by adjusting the sound volume up and down or the speed side up and down with the dials. Also, FSD is more natural on the freeway than AutoPilot, in my experience. FSD gives wide berth to semi rigs, AutoPilot doesn't give extra space. I've owned my 2020 M3P for 4.5 years now and still love it as much as when I bought it, actually more, since the software upgrades have been great. Took it for a 6400 mile road trip last year without any charging issues, wonderful experience, relaxing.

Use the right scroll wheel to adjust speed instead of nudging the steering wheel to satisfy autopilot nag. Works great.

So after all the Electric Viking reviews of the BYD, Xpeng, Baidue, MG "Tesla killers", "Tesla rivals", we arrive at this: the Model 3 Highland is a fantastic and unbeatable EV. And I'm not surprised. Glad you enjoyed your stay in the US viking.
@jakekienholz21Ай бұрын
Hey Sam! You don't actually have to tug on the wheel. You can use the buttons for volume or speed adjustments to satisfy the "nag". I'm glad you had an awesome time in CA!

I'm a Model Y owner (UK based). I agree with everything you said 100%. They're brilliant cars but - for me - the standard Autopilot is not good enough: stop-start is jerky, as you say and I do occasionally get phantom braking which scares the bejesus out of me and my wife and the poor guy behind me. I tend to drive with my foot resting on the gas pedal when in autopilot for this reason, so I can quickly intervene before it screeches to a halt! I therefore can't wait for FSD to arrive to Europe as this will hopefully improve the capability. In terms of storage I went from a big Volvo V90 estate to a LR Model Y, and the amount each can carry seems about the same, when you consider the Tesla has a deep well in the boot and a frunk too. The amount of stuff we crammed into the Tesla when moving my kids into / out of University was incredible.

To satisfy autopilot/fsd nag, you can also scroll one of the 2 scroll wheels on the steering wheel (volume or speed adjust). I scroll the volume wheel up/down 1 click. This is easier in all situations except when the car is turning.
