Those good drill bits will eventually dull on you. Get you a drill Dr. I bought one a few years ago and I love it. I run into situations like you do where you break off a bolt out have friends bring me something the have broken off a bolt in. I have a good set of drill bits I use to drill holes for my taps got occasions like that and it's nice to have them sharp and ready to go!

Hey, Eric, love seeing your progress on the Fairmont. I'm not a mechanic myself, but here's a couple of tips with the drill bits: Use lubricant when drilling into metal and don't rely on "hand tightening" the bit into the chuck. While it's a failsafe method many use to avoid breaking the bit, it's often better to learn to use the ratchet of your drill instead to avoid wearing down the back end of your bit or the chuck in the worst case. Just twist the last quarter or half over to secure the bit into the chuck and with little practice, you'll find the correct ratchet setting for your hand pressure while drilling. Keep up the great work, I've learned a lot from you over the years

Hey Eric I used to smoke drill bits constantly. An old guy at work gifted me cutting oil he said he was tired of me killing my bits and didn't like the noise they made lol. He was a little crotchety. But using the cutting oil my bits last 10 times longer and the cut is faster. Just a tip passed down to me.

With everything fitting so tight, we really won't know the "true" clearance issues until after some good test runs. High speed cornering, suspension travel at max, and torque will probably present some clearance issues we can't see right now. Good job though Eric, I like how it's coming so far.

I still need to sort out the compressor mount. That's something I'm still struggling with. I also have to work out what I'm doing with the evaporator inside the dash. I have no idea what I'm going to run into there, but I do want to run AC. After all, I'll be driving this car during the summer for the most part.

This video gives you a good reason why people put the motor in than build the turbo setup. Makes it easy to know what you have to work around and what need to come off before you put the engine in and take out. I would have took alot less time to just take all the turbo piping off put motor in and put piping back on.

I'm happy with my choice. I only had to remove one pipe and a blow off valve. Now that the stabilizer bar has been worked out, it'll be even easier next time. Trying to put those headers on inside the car would be very difficult and take a great deal more time. Access to the fasteners is difficult with them out of the car. Also, all the cold side of the turbo still needs to be installed so in effect, I have done what you suggested. Thanks for your input.

DEI also makes heat shielding for hoses that will match your blanket & wrap. Could be something to use for that oil hose instead.

Hi Eric. fantastic video as always. I do have one remark. That drive shaft looked a wee bit long. The plunge on the gearbox end of the trail shaft was quite deep. once the car is sitting on the ground with all its weight, plus the up travel of the suspension could bottom out the drive shaft in the gearbox. im sure you've got ot figured out now though seeing how far behind these videos are. thanks heaps as always eric :)

Thanks for the input. I have looked into it and it's fine. Also the new torque arm holds the differential in place so there isn't really any slip of the driveshaft to speak of.

We had a similar motor mount problem on my Dad's Dart block 363. Although, we opted to grind the support rib from the block because it ended up being right in the middle of the motor mount and it would have severely compromised the mount. It ended up working out fine but very very annoying! This is not a problem with the Ford R block though.

When drilling out a bolt I've found that frequent lubrication of the drill bit and short (10 second) bursts with lubrication between each 10 second round, keeps the bit sharp, and actually makes it bit faster since you aren't drilling with a dull bit by the end of the process. Lesson learned a few weeks ago when I had a few snapped bolts on a Water pump I did.

That stroker 406 screamed & I want to remake it!!! So, if I am ever so lucky to get my garage built & find a 1973 sb400 with 4.125 stroke, id be very happy! Rolling an engine hoist with a suspended engine on SMOOTH concrete is almost the best part... Because ALL of us who have done engine swaps struggle with trying to fight divots and cracks (GRAVEL) in our situations... Lucky guy you! :D

Nice job! Gonna be one of the nicest Fairmonts around. I think you may still have steering issues WHEN the front suspension is compressed. You may end up going to a narrower tire in the front.

Eric, you can bang your exhaust with a hammer to "make it fit better" without losing any power. Don't know if you knew this already but it's a public service. Roadkill tested this myth and actually made MORE POWER by hitting the exhaust with a hammer. They "ruined" a new set of extractors by mashing every single pipe with a hammer.

Also eric, you can heat the plastic wheel well thing with a heatgun and mould a clearance for it. I'd just heat it up and use a piece of wood to push it inwards.

I still think you should clean the engine bay and possibly paint it if you desire to before you actually install the engine in the vehicle. I know your modo has always been stay dirty, but lets face it, a clean engine is so much easier and pleasant to work on IMO, and since you're no longer in a rush, I say why not take the time to make it look nice. Just my thoughts. Looking forward to the completion of this project. Keep up the good work!

A lot of people feel the way you do. I don't. I like the contrast between a dirty engine compartment and a clean engine. To me, it makes the engine look even better. The way the engine compartment looks has zero to do with the performance of the car. If I was doing this for appearance, I would have chosen a different car. This is a straight up sleeper build in every sense of the word.

Eric these are the parts of a build I love, Any one can chuck an engine in but its the finesse part that sorts the men from the boys .Making a part that took hours to make that those in the know appreciate the hours it took to fab up , but joe blogs just sees a engine mount roll bar mod and has no idea why its been done really If they notice it at all . Eric, not sure if you know this or not but you cannot have more than 18" of rubber fuel line if you plan on going to the drag strip! Check the NHRA rule book online and this will confirm it, you also can not have the regulator mounted on the firewall. You should go with aluminum hardline or braided hose for the fuel system.

never had any love for those stock ford aluminum bell housings, the 66 falcon used to eat throwout bearings due to the immature nut behind the wheel, many heli-coils, bearings and skinned knuckles later found a guy that owned a junk yard who gave me a steel one from an old tow truck he had rusting away ( back in the early 80's before things were easily buyable ;) )

i thought fairmonts had v8's in austrailia, iknow you are in the us but still info is info. and it has to be said, the reason your brace bar on the k member still fit was due to you heat bending it, if you had cold bent it on a pipe bender it would have been short, but the way you did it actually stretched it just a little, really cool.

Very good video! What I like about you, is you don't try to edit out mistakes or the stuff that you have to work around or with. Makes your work genuine. That's gonna be a beast when you are done, if it's not already done. I was wondering why didn't you just put spacers on that bar under the oil pan? Would that bend jeopardize the integrity of the bar?

Thanks for the input. The entire K member is going to be replaced along with the front suspension. The new K member has spacers for the oil pan.

Those drill bits you're raving about around the 15:00 minute mark would probably last longer and cut even better with some oil to lubricate the cutting surface. Usually something loosely around the viscosity of like a 20 or 30 weight, or ATF, is just the ticket.

Curves bars are your solution to get around engine and oil pan. You will need to make your measurement and ask a shop to make these bars for you with roll hydrolic press with a 24 reheat to unstress the metal. You can also just use heat to curve the bar and make It by your sel with an anvil.

That aluminum cased T5 is really making me jealous. The t150 I just reinstalled weighs 60 pounds, the transfer case that bolts onto it is another 80. There's no way I could have lifted it into the tunnel that easily

The car is likely already running from how the timeline of these seem to work, but I would would strongly consider an alternate solution to the oil return issue. Braided hose to reduce the diameter (clears swaybar) and then a heat insulation/reflective sleeve around the hose to protect it from the exhaust.

Those old Fairmonts never cut very hard anyway. Give 'em half an acre to turn them around. I guess that helps with making sure you have enough clearance for steering.

I believe Maximum Motorsports sells lower a-arms that correct your wheel issues. It seems to me that under actual compression, the tire will contact the fender. Honestly, you won't notice any handling difference in a street car with the .75 to 1.25 extra wheelbase. If anything with the Fairmont being longer, you're ahead of the game over a Fox Mustang.
