Special thanks to UNOH: www.unoh.edu
Also thanks to Kevin Frische and Nate Mailhot.
As you can see, things didn't quite go as planned. It seems to be the way with this engine. It fought us at every turn it seems. However, at the end of the day, this is one heck of an engine. Had we had the entire day to play with the tuning, I'm sure we could have gotten even better numbers.
No worries because once I finish the car I plan to go back and put it on their chassis dyno to see what kind of power it makes at the wheels. We should have plenty of time to dial in the max power of this set up.
So kick back and watch us struggle as we try to make this engine produce some power on the dyno.
The final #'s: 574.7hp @5500 622.8lbft @4400 7.8psi boost

Less than 15 minutes in and already scared of damage on the engine. 16-1 on AFR is just ASKING for trouble! Why this guy was trying to "power" through when the engine was saying enough was enough was scary to watch!!
@JackS425
@JackS425 7 жыл бұрын
PantherSerpahin it wasn't technically lean if you watch later in the video. It was missing and the air from the missing cylinder was causing the o2 to show lean but it was actually rich.
@fabs1565
@fabs1565 7 жыл бұрын
I think they meant it was showing lean because the fuel was not being distributed correctly due to the horrible hat design. This was causing a very litle to no fuel mixture to some of the cylinders
@PantherSerpahin
@PantherSerpahin 7 жыл бұрын
Fabs 15 and all it takes is a bad fuel flow and suddenly you are going into pre detonation issue which can send rods and pistons through the bottom/side of the block
@mattbiggs1524
@mattbiggs1524 7 жыл бұрын
You really think a couple seconds of a lean condition at mid RPMs and at most the time 50% throttle will hurt the engine??? Im not worried at all, the AFR was right at every other RPM to cool the cylinders back down and excess heat was not an issue.

This may be one of the most interesting videos about tuning on a dyno on KZbin because many just tell you that a dyno gets numbers and they show a dude sitting down looking at a computer. Although this is a video in the build series you actually get some sort of look on what the hell these guys actually do to get an engine to run right. I mean it's different bc were talking about a turbo charged carbureted motor so there's a lot more involved than just a naturally aspirated application.

I miss the good ole days! Raw fuel,carborator tuning,reading plugs,changing dwell, setting points. It reminds me of my early days of automobiles. I witnessed the incorporation of throttle body injection,then fuel injection,stuff that was already being used in Europe on high end cars back in 1975. I still love the sound of the dyno and hearing that turbo on that engine is pretty cool. Fiddle farting around with something we played with back on my brothers cars only to take it off and go back to running without. When you eat drink and sleep engines,sometimes taking a break can unscramble your brain and get you to rethink an issue,sometimes something simple stupid,sometimes not when it comes to trouble shooting. Nice strong engine ! Like I said,I miss those days.

Nice to see the process of fault finding. Most dyno runs shown look as though all they do is bolt the motor on and pull the handle on a full power run first go. Hope you have plenty of cash for new tyres Eric.

Air is lazy, and resists itself going in a straight line, much less making a radical turn. The only thing that flat hat is good for is filter relocation for cool air intake/no boost as this experiment proved. A blow thru carby can be twitchy to setup [boosters and air bleeds need to see the same pressures on top], but this episode might help the injector fans too: velocity and wave effect/backpressure may tweak effective boost values seen in the ports differently along the rpm range. I'd like to see a dyno test with heads modified to chart flow or pressure seen in each intake runner on the heads to compare aftermarket manifold designs flat spots in certain rpm ranges on a typical v8 injected motor, but that may be more trouble than Eric would like to get into. [There's always cool looking stuff out there that doesn't actually make the grade]. Mainly - to compare front vs. rear cylinder performance VE at various engine speeds. I note alot of OEM manifolds always add extra intake runner length and seem to pay attention to minimum turn radius details to a point that seems silly to anyone who never turned a wrench or tuned anything.

@anthonywebber2211 7 жыл бұрын
EricTheCarGuy yes EFI has a bit more control, but the reason I said gale banks Pontiac Firebird is cause it has a twin turbo big block Chevy and has a carburetor and he wanted to go 300 MPH, so power is still there with a carburetor
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 7 жыл бұрын
Yea, carburetors are just fine for making power. I think it's just that most people don't know how they work, or how to tune them is the reason why they don't like them. Hence the reason I asked Mr. Mailhot in the video if he thought tuning carburetors was difficult.
