Hey Scott, I've always hoped, as have probably 10s of 1000s of folks, that one day you'd set up a workshop in your house and teach real world tips on guitar repairs. I know there are some good guys out there, but you have not steered us wrong on any aspect of musical reference and the like, so I think it'd be great to see. Thanks.

My dad showed me the battery trick in the 60's when we were building a Heathkit guitar amp (remember those?). I used it afterward every time I was installing a car stereo (remember that lol?) or hooking up home stereo. Very Groovy indeed.

Speaker cones are honestly quite amazing...some still working fine after many decades of heavy bass and abuse. My 6" monitors have been going since the mid 1980's, around the same age as me, and they still sound and look great.

Thanks Scott! What does it sound like if you have an amp driving two speakers (in parallel) with mismatched positive and negative connections? It doesn't seem to make any difference with my home stereo.

Terrific info. Looking to purchase some speakers but don't have a 1/4" connector BUT I do have an Aux type cable that typically goes from the computer's mic/headphone jack. Am I correct in assuming that's the same design with Positive tip and Negative shaft? So I could plug one end to my computer and connect the other to the speaker like you did to get sound...would that work? Barring that doesn't work...what sound does the bad speaker make when just connecting a battery...it was hard to tell in the vid...seemed a lower popping type sound?

Hey Scott my friend. I have an off topic question. I am replacing my broken bolt-on neck. The replacement neck fits very tight but it looks to be tall above the bridge pickup area. What height should I have from the fret board and the bridge pickup top? Thanks and have a great day.

Hey, umm...you keep calling it a speaker coil, but the speaker coil is the coil of wire that sits on/in the magnet. The part you're calling a speaker coil is called the "surround"....unless it's the "diaphragm" or "cone"" you're talking about. Either way, that's not the "voice coil". Other wise there's some good stuff here.

what exactly is 'blown', in a blown speaker?

The majority of the time, a wire in the voice coil will get too hot and break.

@@groovydjs Hi. I had a very scratchy sounding speaker, thats why I was looking for videos to fix it. When moving it, there seemed to be a small amount of drag. So I took the dust cap off, and used a vacuum while moving it up and down. Then I hooked it up, and played some bass through it to really make it move... it was scratchy. I put the vauum as close as I could, and periodically touched the cone to move it more side to side as the music was playing. Fixed!! There must have been some dirt that was dislodged, because its now working.. yay.
