Thank you so much for sharing your part two. I'd been waiting for ever and recently re-watched the first one along with the other beautiful simple ones you've made. I set mine up 6 months ago and it's looking very lush with the moss. All thanks to your example. I'm sorry it didn't work out the way we thought it would. Everyone raves about the hygrolon and dusk moss mix, and I've always been weary. Never really was tempted to go for that mix especially because I understand that it is mostly sphagnum moss that grows. A few random little liverworts and ferns. But not much else. Anyway just wanted to say thanks for following through with a second part even if it was a fail. It was beautiful to watch the time lapse and you covered many great angles. Love your work. Love your accent! ☺️

The biggest mistake most people make is in the water. I cycle my terrariums like I do my aquariums and get good results. Then do 50% water changes once a week, otherwise the cycle will begin again. I use R.O or distilled water only, otherwise moss seems to die eventually in terrariums enclosures. Consistency with light and air movement is also important. It can take some trial and error with placement of the fan and brightness of the light to get right. You will also need to adjust this based on external temperature. I also use moss that grows easily locally, as I get better results than the imported species. Something interesting... in a small carnivorous tank, where the walls are covered by hygrolon, I have found the moss has done best. I think it may be due to the fact I never give carnivorous plants any nutrients (that will kill them). I just keep the water clean and the lid on 3/4, no internal fan or pump, just still water in a cube tank. Good luck mate!

Thanks for your feedback. I'm quite sur now that the problem was the water cycle especially since this the point I don't really master.
@ultrademigod4 жыл бұрын
Spot on. It's a common failing to not cycle the water in terrariums/vivariums. I don't change my water as often as you do, but whenever I do replace the water I notice the plants put on a growth spurt, and everything is suddenly greener and brighter.

there are no failures only lessons learned. merci bien pour sharing your experiences. your patience is amazing, btw you would make a great nature cinematographer with your perfect time lapse videos.

I read from a forum post of a successful hygrolon user not to have it in direct contact with water as it wicks so well it keeps plants oversaturated...so maybe was just too wet?
@MrDreihornn4 жыл бұрын
Hey, at 1:20 there is mold forming on your moss and it is the reason it dies. I have the same problem and I don't know what to do. Also, I have very good air circulation so this is not a problem.

What a shame…. Too much water maybe? I’m sure you sorted it out. I’m enjoying your videos. Cheers from new subscriber Australia🇦🇺❤️

The ficus looked nutrient starved (most likely nitrogen, but I always need to check a chart to be sure). Moss does need some amount of nutrients to grow as well. Is it possible that your organic backgrounds were decomposing just enough to at nitrogen into the environment? Would a very very dilute liquid fertilizer in the water reservoir help?
@Terrarium-Construction4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. The background is in polyethylene terephthalate if I remember well so I don't think that it can decomposing so quickly but maybe I'm wrong.
@sparklemotion424 жыл бұрын
@@Terrarium-Construction I meant the other backgrounds that you were more successful with. Hygrolon shouldn't ever break down, right?

Did you add some form of fertiliser or nutrients to the water in the false bottom? Because it could be that the plants died because they didn‘t get enough nutrients, so having some fertiliser could help.

do you think the plants stopped growing because of the winter months? i always notice this with my house plants. I am planning on making a hygrolon background

A suivre donc ;)
@Terrarium-Construction4 жыл бұрын

Looks like chlorinosis. I think the water you used was probably from the tap. City water is treated with chlorine and the pH is often >10. Try to repeat the experiment except with distilled water from the grocery store. It likely needs air movement as well with a small fan.

I just got fragrant moss from the country of Denmark. Comes in flower or earth scent. Growing it on the walls seems hard so I will keep my fragrant moss on the ground.
