The CX-50, Mazda's sort-of off-roader, is very close to the CX-5 in many metrics. Is it different enough to justify its existence, and is it as good to drive as other Mazda vehicles? It definitely looks different than most Mazda SUVs...

As former CX-5 owner I will be taking one of these out for a test drive. CX-5 was one of the most dependable and trouble free cars I’ve owned. Just as an FYI this is more closely related to the underpinnings of a CX-30. They’ve elongated it to create the CX-50 which is probably why you feel such a difference between them.

The rear end on the CX-5 has a more sophisticated rear suspension than the CX-50. I agree with Paul that the CX-50 is a fail for Mazda. The CX-50 has a harsher ride but more room. The CX-9 has great ride and handling properties (have not driven the CX-5).

Y'all might be overthinking a bit. I love the way it looks. Full stop. I don't go off-road and when I look at the CX 50 I don't think off-road. I just think: damn, that looks nice, definitely better than a CX 5. Sometimes, it's just that simple.

The CX-5 should go longer/lower/wider then we wouldn't need this! I prefer the overall stance of this cx-50 to the cx-5. Good to see Mazda going after new (to them) market share as well. Great review as always guys keep them coming!

A very fair video. We love ours. Country roads, back roads, gravel, dirt no problem. I've pushed it and it loves it. I'm currently averaging over 28 mpg, and get over 32 often on single trips. The interior is super easy to get used to and keep clean. Perfect road trip car. Nothing but fun as a daily driver.

I absolutely love you guys! I listen to your podcast just about every day on my commute (in 2014 a Mazda 3). As someone who was sold on the CX-5 until I saw this, I was looking forward to hearing your thoughts knowing what they are on the CX-5... but it seems like Paul's rants ran away with the balanced perspective you guys normally give in your reviews. I wanted to hear more from Todd on where he differs especially in regard to how it drives rather than what he agrees with Paul on. Like you guys I think the styling is a win and I've heard good things about the way it drives from people who care about the things I do for example... good steering feel, being planted, and a feeling of overall solidity... I know on the technical side of things there are more similarities than differences however when I reached out to Mazda for comment on the details they said "The CX-50 is built on Mazda's latest generation small platform, sharing many of our latest updates. Its suspension has been optimized to handle outdoor terrain and accommodate the vehicles size. It has also been tuned to handle larger driving inputs that are typical in driving in off-road conditions." I also understand that it has the largest AWD transfer case Mazda has ever built on a vehicle, that with the 18- degree approach angle and 24 - degree departure angle, towing capacity, and a stronger roof that holds more weight.... I think its enough to differentiate itself mechanically from the CX-5. Also, I disagree that Subaru has a better AWD system. I've seen Mazda's AWD system succeed where Subarus failed even before they made these latest advancements with MI- Drive and i-activ AWD. Also you made that statement with nothing in your review to back that up where others have. I normally love your work guys but this time I'll have to borrow Paul's line and say it seems like with this one "you phoned it in" and sold the CX-50 short in the process.

It was just nonsense, start to finish, especially that bald guy. I own a cx50, it has nothing to do with cx5, i think you should consider getting this vehicle if you're still shopping. It drives like a sedan, lots of power, handling and steering ON POINT! it is definitely a light to moderate offroader even with the 20 inch wheels, it also has the meridian edition with 18 inch. That baldie is a clown saying gravel roads are the most this vehicle can handle. Transmission UNLIKE his beloved Subaru is not a sloppy cheap cvt, they're using the same tried and true 6 speed automatic. On top of being a capable vehicle off-road, it is a great highway vehicle with the most options and safety features you can buy at $43k. It has a lot of features that no Subaru or Toyota would offer, simply class leading. Honestly you can compare it to Lexus and Acura. Again that bald guy is a f-ing joke.

I’ve seen many off-road videos of the CX-50, and I’m impressed of what it can do. It’s a Compact Crossover that is telling you, “you don’t need to off road, but you can”. Not extreme off-roading, but it can do enough off roading, plus drives and looks like a sports car. I’d pick this over the Cx-5 100%.

I have a premium plus turbo. Its an absolute blast to drive and there is so much tech in this car it makes my head spin. I traded in a 16 subaru outback 3.6 for this car. While the outback was very good the 50 is even better. The cvt on the outback was weird at times and the ride was soft. My kids hated the outback. They called it the "old mans car" . Def better styling on this car, but Its not for everyone. I think the ride is a bit stiff, but the cornering and steering is precise. Was thinking of an RDX but that was at least $5k or more. Also it has the perfect amount of space for a car this point in my life. I always thought the cx5 was too small. Test drive and decide for yourself. Also, getting 25mpg combined driving with mid grade fuel.

I wonder if mazda has decided to go this route with the CX50 because they are planning in going full sports car with the cx5, I think right now they overlap alot, but ultimately it's cuz the new cx5 will be much more Macan than CUV. I think that would be the right thing to do, it's already sportier, fine tuning it to be more focused would better differentiate this and the cx5

Have I mentioned how much I love your channel as I binge through your content? Awesome work. We currently have a 2013 CX-5 FWD Sport. It's been a solid car as a commuter and small hauler. We have a 2019 Pilot as a family hauler and large gear hauler. Right now, I use it as my Canoe hauler - which, to be honest, because it's so tall and wide, kinda sucks. I practically need a step stool get it tied down properly. We're replacing the 2013 CX-5, so we've been out researching and test driving cars. We first test drove the CX-50, as we absolutely LOVE the styling. Mazda's new positioning of the CX-30/50 vehicles fits 100% inline with what we're going to use it for. It's not a true "Off-roader", where you're going to go stump and rock jumping. But Mazda's positioning is, "drive 100+ miles on freeway, a few dozen miles on hilly/mountain roads, then 5, 10 or 20 miles (maybe) on a gravel/dirt road at the very end" to get to your "outdoor recreational area". ....That's legit, the epitome of a trip from Minneapolis, MN to Grand Marais, MN (HWY miles), up the Gunflint Trail (winding road), to Hungry Jack Lodge off the beaten path on gravel road, near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Hitting those dirty gravely back roads for 10-20 miles, I totally appreciate that extra cladding on the bottom. Another point of difference. The CX-5 Preferred edition has 7.6" ground clearance, whereas the CX-50 has 8.3". You have to step up to the Carbon Edition or higher in the CX-5 to get 7.9" of clearance. And you can get as much as 8.6" in the CX-50 with the Premium edition. Sure. You can certainly take the CX-5 in the same places as the CX-50, Mazda positions the CX-5 as a "city/urban commuter/grocery getter" more than an outdoors enthusiast vehicle. Even with its 19" wheels. Why we opted for the CX-30 over the CX-50? One reason? Garage space. We have a two car garage, and with the Pilot, we don't want to stuff another wide vehicle into the garage, and even that little bit of 3 additional inches of the CX-50 would make it tighter than it already is. The CX-30 gives us a bit more room. Plus, for me, and canoeing, the lower roof height of the CX-30 will make it easier to get the canoe on and off the roof rack, while also offering reasonably good ground clearance and lower body cladding for those dirty roads in the Northwoods. However, if we were shopping for a singular SUV, not already having a pilot as a family hauler, then the CX-50 would have been the choice. In fact, as CX-50 and a Mazda CX-30 turbo would be a sweet little two-car package for a smaller/younger family. As it is, when we come around to replacing the Honda Pilot, the CX-90 will be at the top of our list. :)

I really appreciate Paul and Todd and their always-honest reviews that aren't done to curry favor with the manufacturers. I just bought a '23 CX-5 and never seriously considered a CX-50 because it seemed to be mostly a more-expensive appearance package decontented from the CX-5 in meaningful ways (beam axle instead of full independent, cheaper interior materials, etc.). After my purchase, I watched several CX-50 reviews that implied it left the CX-5 for dead and Mazda should just discontinue the latter. Thank goodness there are still auto KZbinrs like Everyday Driver and Savagegeese that tell the truth as they see it and don't subscribe to the "new is ALWAYS better" and "new gee-whiz tech (or trendy styling) tops driving dynamics" mindset common to their video niche.

The target demographics can't tell the difference between the CX-50, the CX-5, and the Outback in driving dynamics. Yes, the CX-50 has a less desirable suspension setup but it really never matters in this segment. What the CX-50 does have that's different from the CX-5 is a pano sun roof. More space in the rear. More ground clearance. To me it's a great mid-western vehicle. Decent on snow. Decent on pavement. CX-50 vs the Subaru Outback? The Mazda has an auto transmission, not a cvt. That's the only "ground breaking positive" I can think of. That doesn't mean I'll ever buy it, but this is what that demographic sees.

I felt the same way as Paul the first time I got into the CX-50. The interior design and materials are clearly a step backwards for Mazda. There is a ton of hard plastic in this SUV, especially in the second row space. There is no question the CX-5 is the superior vehicle in terms of interior design and material quality. There is absolutely no justification for the $43k price tag on this SUV, especially considering a decently equipped GV70 costs about $46-$47k.

Well, hard plastics make more sense for an "off-road" vehicle. If used as intended, they'll endure rough usage better than softer materials.

That's if you don't consider all of the EXTERIOR upgrades over the CX5. Pano roof, reinforced B pillars to stand on while loading gear on roof, 1500 extra lbs of towing capacity, strengthened roof for supporting rooftop tent, turbo engine. Design of car. Paul only looked at this as a car not an SUV with capabilities that cars don't have. He obviously doesn't go camping, or kayaking. I see this and I think wow the roof is lower so I don't have to get a hernia putting a kayak on top. He NEVER EVEN MENTIONED that because he doesn't value that aspect of the vehicle.

I love how these experts don’t actually do their research before reviewing cars. The CX-50 is NOT a revision of the CX-5. It’s based in the Mazda 3/CX-30 platform. I realize that Mazda is terrible with the naming convention (this should have been named the CX-300)… but still, car reviewers like these guys REALLY need to do their homework before reviewing a car. Love these vids where Paul is not buying the marketing drivel all other KZbinrs regurgitate. Paul seems to like this as much as the Taos 😂. But I am a little confused as the look of the interior, ignoring that center vent, is copied from the beloved Mazda3 and Cx-30. Also this one reviewed has the turbo that is so loved in other Mazda’s. The CX-5 is a little tight space wise against its competitors so this solves that. Plus this is just for the North American market where the CX5 is a world car. This also weighs the same as the CX-5 but gets about one MPG more overall with either engine.

Three possibilities for CX-5 going forward: 1. No redesign, the IRS platform stays the same and it gets another "refresh" 2. CX-5 nameplate stays, but it'll be a narrower more urban-styled CX-50 3. CX-5 gets dropped and CX-50 (and CX-70 PHEV/I6) fully replace it in the lineup

What is the obsession with canoes? I used to drive around with a canoe on top of a 1991 Toyota Camry. You don't need a Subaru Outback to carry a canoe. You don't even need a roof rack. Four molded foam pads and some nylon rope will do just fine. Just be sure to secure it really tightly at the front and back so it doesn't wiggle around in the wind, and then run some rope under the roof to secure it side to side so it doesn't slide off sideways. Presto, done, $20 worth of stuff (excluding canoe) and you're good to go. Electric *trolling* motors are a thing. You can put them on canoes, which I guess is the origin of the e-Canoe. Wait until Apple gets into the outdoor sports market and introduces their i-Canoe. You could probably get a canoe up to about 50 MPH with one if the propeller would spin fast enough, because they're really built for *trolling* in larger fishing boats.

The Subaru awd system is actually not better. The Outback uses a CVT which does not allow simulated diff locking by braking a lifted wheel. The Mazda uses a conventional automatic, which is actually better for that application. You can see this if you watch any Outback off-road videos. As soon as a wheel lifts, it’s done. Surprisingly, the Mazdas have performed well.

Well, hell- I might just have a body specialist put some CLADDING on a CX-5 for me... and get my OWN WIld Peaks on it.. :) Might also add some led fog lights- and in the "vents" on the back that are fake-- put some oil slick shooters, or smoke screen shooter, or some GUNS for tailgaters!! (more JAMES BOND stuff).. but if that's the only difference- for the difference in price- might just wait - get a CX-5 and do the cladding on my CX-5 later.... BUT-- as you're talking- I love the look of that. The use will be almost the same as the CX5-- so comes down to basically PRICE.. :)

That's too funny. I was watching the whole time saying "that's not off road, that's a well maintained dirt road, I can and do drive my Mustang on roads like that. Roads with hills even!" And then @16:15 "That Mustang can do what we just did!" I'm sure Mazda's intention is to go after the Subaru crowd, like you were saying, and it's at least partially working. One thing my Mustang won't do is go in the snow so I've been checking out options. The obvious first choice is is a Subaru Outback or Forester but I am taking a long hard look at the CX-50. I have no intention of having a "hold my beer" moment half way up the side of a mountain on an ATV trail, so the lack of protective plating isn't an issue. I'll be mostly driving around town, cross country throughout the year and so sometimes in the winter, and in relatively snowy places from time to time. I'm definitely not in the market for a Toyota TRD or Subaru Wilderness, so I could see myself getting around just fine in a CX-5 or CX-50. I think I prefer the Subaru options for their solid AWD reputation, but they're hard to find around here even for a test drive. Also I'm not quite sold on the idea of buying one of the first cars off the line of a new model from a new factory. Just sayin'. I expect the defect rate to be high. I'm really not a fan of the new 2023 Outback plastic parts. By themselves they're a good reason to go with dark gray or black paint, because otherwise it just looks cartoonish. Where will the cladding wars leave us in ten years? Will cars be covered in plastic up to the windowsills?

I agree with everything stated, and stated well, thank you, but for one thing. As others have said, the CX-50 is not built on the same platform as the CX-5. The CX-50 shares its suspension platforms with the Mazda3 and CX-30 and their beam rear-axles. The CX-5 has IRS. I do agree that Mazda turned away from the driving dynamics and character of their other vehicles and went more mainstream to appeal to a larger pod of buyers, but on the flip side, where there is much more competition.

Love it or hate it, at least Subaru really studied their target audience with the Outback and Forester, especially when developing their Wilderness line. They actually studied some of the mods their consumers made who actually took them off-road and applied some. I personally think they could have went just a little further, but they nailed some of the major ones. This Mazda is really all about the off-road looks without the additional function which I think its a miss for Mazda because that is not them.

Good job not reporting that 1. It can bear the weight of a rooftop tent 2. That it has 8.6" of ground clearance 3. That there is a Meridian Edition with 18" tires 4. That the point of this car is to be utilized for what most people do offroad which is camp, tow, and haul others to exotic locations NOT extreme offloading which only about 2% of people do. Forgive them for making something for 98% of us. 5. BAD MAZDA for making a new car that's not exactly like their other cars. 6. For having a pano roof that the cx5 doesn't have. This wasn't intended to be a jeep but it is intended for SPORT (drive and handling) UTILITY (extra features that CX5 doesn't have including elongated rear storage).

Shame about the dynamics not feeling as good as the CX5. Love the way it looks and would be interested in the upcoming CX90, but if they stayed too far from the dynamics of the CX9, we will be keeping our MDX.

I drove a 2016 CX-5 GT for about 3 years. Bullseye on the handling, no body roll there - and I mean, how?? Yet they did it, the CX-5 rides "high" but feels "low" in the corners as a result of how the suspensions work together. You don't get that in the CX-50? Well. They might as well call it a 2023 Mazda Tribute then.

Almost every KZbin video about the CX-50 focuses on the term "off road". I think this is a mistake. I owned a CX-5 and traded it in last April for a CX-50. Being lower, the CX-50 is much easier to get stuff on and off the roof. If people do mountain biking, kayaking, skiing, surfing, fishing, towing (3500 lbs sure beats 2000) etc., it is almost a no-brainer that they would prefer this to the CX-5. Add the panoramic moonroof and the superior styling (the CX-5 is still pretty but essentially the same as 6 years ago) plus the ease of wireless Android auto/Apple Car play and I think the CX-50 is aimed at a sportier, more get-out-into-the-nature crowd. Maybe you'll need to go down some dirt roads to reach a spot to do your rock climbing, biking, fishing or whatever but the whole package is more targeted to people who have hobbies with adventure "stuff" to haul.

Cladding is disgusting no natter the vehicle save for a truck. It looked bad in the 90s and still does. It ruins an otherwise clean design. The CUV/SUV is a viral infection afflicting every car maker. I know it's what people are buying because it can't be a wagon or hatchback. but i for one am tired of them.

I am leaning toward this one---but I'd Like to know- the REAL differences between this one and the CX-5 premium etc... and YES- the styling DID influence my decision- and the slight more "off-roadiness" did too. I LIKE the cladding.. (and after I've had it a whlie will make that GLOSS black and maybe even DIP the car. ) It will NOT be offroad for me-- unless by accident.. but I want the BAD WEATHER advantage of the AWD.. We're getting LOTS more WET icy snow the last couple of years and it suppose to be MUCH worse this year.. BUT - what are the REAL differences between this and CX-5 premium?? OH- and I HATE the 20" wheels with flat tires-- that's just STUPID- retarded look and effects the ride pitifully-- and I do NOT want moon roof- that's just a leak wating to happen.. the rest is GREAT!!!

These people don't own any mazda, they don't buy any mazda and they don't support this brand, yet they have the audacity to come up with nonsensical video criticizing a very well made vehicle and babbling about how Subaru is better. You don't like? You don't buy! I'm talking to you baldie, go buy your cvt powered grocery getter with cladding, cx50 is not made for boring grumpy people. I happily paid over $43k on this very same vehicle cx50 and I'm proud to report it's the best car in this class, with all the options you can only find in luxury cars. It was nonsense from beginning to the end.

We’re glad you found us, but it seems clear this is the first piece of ours you’ve ever seen. We’ve given Mazdas praise on many occasions and consider the CX5 one of the best 5 seat CUVs at any cost. Between this channel and our original channel where we do comparisons, Mazdas have done well and generally better than Subarus. Obviously our guys disagreed with each other on the CX50 and it’s hit a nerve in you as an owner. More than anything we’re glad you like your vehicle as the point of our show since the beginning is to help people find cars they love. Thanks for watching!

I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-50 has the same engine. It has burned engine oil from day one and getting progressively worse. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. Don't take a chance and buy Mazda’s. They don't stand by their product unlike Honda. Mazda will do whatever it takes to avoid paying to fix the problem, even when they themselves admit that there's a problem. My advice, stick to Hondas and Toyotas. I’ve had problems with their cars in the past but, they always fixed my warranty issues without question and after that they ran forever. Don’t fall for talking point that Toyota and Mazda are now collaborating and even use the same assembly line. It means nothing. There's a class action lawsuit against them (Haven't responded). I personally have filed with the Mazda, BBB, Attorney General, and a consumer agency. It's been two weeks and nothing. I'm lining up a lawyer as my last resort. Don't go through this hell, buy a Toyota or Honda instead.
