I have two of these and I love it when the rifle goes into tune. It doesn't make a sound when firing. When it's out of tune it's like a tuning fork going off every shot. This brake basically takes out the need to move the bullet in and out to find the seating depth the rifle likes. You can make it even smaller a group by adding that in, but really 0.2 is fine for PRS. I have had no issues with repeatability. Erik stands by his product and at F-Class and PRS matches I see a ton of EC tuners, because he makes other styles and calibers.

Ding ding ding ding! We have a winner. I have older Winchester and Browning rifles with the BOSS installed, and they pretty much eliminate so-called "ammo pickiness". It doesn't work with everything, but the BOSS will help make your rifle "like" a much larger range of loads, and will produce groups you'll love.

I did some testing with 168 and was able to tighten the groups down to .365 for a five-shot group. I ran out of 168 and switched to 175 BTHP. Before the EC brake my rifle would shoot the 175 in the 3/4 moa range very consistently. I started firing 2 shot groups at 0 going in increments of 2. At setting 2 they were touching but I continued on all the way back to 0 being 10. Setting 2 and 8 were both touching. 8 was very slightly tighter. I dropped back to 7 and went in half step adjustments. At 7 it had opened up to about 1/2", 7.5 was about the same, skipped 8, 8.5 was almost 1 hole but I could see it was 2 shots. Setting 9 was 1 hole, I couldn't tell through my spotting scope that 2 shots were there. I sent 3 more making it a 5 shot group. Subtracting the .308 for the bullet diameter the group measured .210. Thats a .518 hole with a .308! Wow, factory Remington 700 PSS .308 26" 1:12 twist with a Timney trigger and an EC Tuner brake is shooting factory ammo sub 1/4 moa !! This sounds like the product I may need. I had a load that consistently shot .5” inch groups at 100 yards with single digit ES/SD. Shot a 4” six shot group at 995 yards with that load. Then I ran out of powder and switched to a different lot of the same powder. For reasons I’m still scratching my head trying to figure out why the groups went to crap. I would have three touching and two fliers high and low. However, the velocity node stay the same with single digit ES/SD at the same charge weight. The velocity did drop approximately 50 fps though. I also developed a load for a couple 308 rifles that have BDC reticles, is gas operated and the other is bolt action. The load I’ve developed runs identical ES/SD in both rifle, low teen ES and single digit SD, and the ballistics match the BDC reticle. The bolt gun shoots a consistent .5” five touching group at 100 yards, but the gas gun shoots .8”. I imagine this brake may shrink those gas gun groups down some more.

Great video. So... With the EC tuner, a person could develop a very fast load and then use the EC tuner to tighten the groups. Correct?
@GunFunZS3 жыл бұрын
Yeah basically your method would be run a ladder and pick the charge weight that has the smallest standard deviation on velocity. Then load up a bunch of that load. And take the ones you just loaded that are all the same load with your best standard deviation of velocity, and shoot a fire you shot group turn out the turner. Shoot another group. Turn out the tuner. And so on. By the time you've done say 50 rounds there you should have found a couple of nodes that are fairly accurate. You know I don't have to compromise between a harmonic node and a consistent velocity node you can choose both. You adjust your powder to be the consistent velocity and you adjust your barrel to be the consistent harmonic.

@@onelegwest I'm willing to bet money on two things. 1 you were probably a much better shot than me. 2 The defect of that rifle you rejected was probably more than sufficiently accurate for the hunting you're actually going to do with it. For those weary of the tuner brake; buy one and install it as if it were a standard brake. Develop a load conventionally with a powder and seating depth node that shoots well. When you go to a match and your groups start opening up because of throat erosion or change in temperature/pressure, you can adjust your tuner on the fly as a backup. I think this thing can cut your load development time in half. It would be so nice to find a powder charge with low sd and then you could essentially finish your load development in 1 day at the range as opposed to making a bunch of trips back to your reloading bench
@fullwhackparamotoring24203 жыл бұрын
So is it safe to say that using a magneto speed could alter your guns groups and make a good load look bad? My custom 270 stacks rounds in a 1/4 MOA group all day long but last time I shot it with my magneto speed the group's were about 3/4 MOA and I was confused because it was the same load. Now I'm thinking the magneto speed effected my harmonics. I guess from now on during load development I'll only use the magneto speed after I find a load that groups well.

It would be interesting to see results on a cool cloudy day versus a hot sunny day. Interesting video. I just put a tuner on a very nice .22 LR so anxious to see how it affects accuracy at 50 yards and beyond.

With a brake like this can you see the bullet trace through the scope on a 6.5 Creed?

So you find the node and reduce group to minimums. Can you then mimic the tuner with a static accessory so the tuner can be used elsewhere ?

I have a 308 that I hand load for and a 300 PRC that I do not have immediate plans to hand load for due to lack of component availability. My question is do you feel that this brake is potentially a money/ammo saver for dialing in factory loads?

In one of his videos about seating depth Eric himself says that you can tune "any load" just by adjusting seating depth. IOW, according to him, changing seating depth changes harmonics in a manner similar to a tuner.

Tuners can help shot placement. small caliber rifles can use improvements on shot placement. It really helps when hunting, large or small game

Have one sitting on the shelf right now. Going to try it on my 6mm arc when I finally get the upper. (Of course do a baseline test with original brake first.) Haven't heard of anyone trying them on gas guns. Guess there's only one way to find out.

Really interesting. This subject matter has been of many topics on several LIVE show, using a "barrel tuner or not"... And it really is interesting to see so many other there building a general census for the Pro's & Con's of this. Also worth mentioning, many of these folks that are already going on with this adventure of experimenting with a barrel tuner, of various brands and types, it will be crazy interesting to see the various calibers. Something so simple, yet, exceptionally complicated. These kinda remind me of the sky-scraper tuned dampers. (the multi-ton chunk of steel at the very top of the sky scraper to calm the swaying down), yet, it is just a chunk of heavy mass, hanging from cables, all the while ever so delicately balanced or tuned to the buildings harmonics.. I look forward to trying one in the future. I am a bit away's from trying one just yet, as my skill set is still too messy, to be able to notice a difference, as per, is the P.O.I. me, or the rifle system or weather, etc.... Soon though. that will be fun to play with a few of these various types of anti-harmonic / damper units.. Thank you for showing the graphs, I enjoy that seeing that kinda stuff, it helps my mind understand further what you are saying in a 2D format.. Thank you.

What I would like to know is tuning for conditions. Say you go out in the morning and shoot. Then the weather conditions change effecting your load for afternoon shoot. Or a cold front moves through. Could you add settings to your dope for different conditions? And would they be repeatable enough to make it feasible?

Is this something that would fit on a Remington 700 25-06? Do I have to cut threads onto the barrel or does it connect some other way?
@mattfleming863 жыл бұрын
The barrel would need to be threaded by a smith.

I want to try that brake system out on my 338 RUM... it has been a finicky round for me ... it has a 28" McGowan 1-9" twist barrel that is 1.062 at the muzzel and wonder if I might bennifet from this brake

I think to really tell if the tuner did anything you need a control sample of groups. For example, what would the graph at 5:26 look like if you just left the tuner on 0 and shot 7 3-shot groups? Obviously they wouldn't all be the same size. Is it possible if you shot 7 groups with the tuner on the same setting that you would shoot one group as small as .43 and another as large as 1.007? One 3 shot group is way too small of a sample to determine any statistical relevance at all. It is possible that the the gun shoots exactly the same on every tuner setting if a large enough sample of shots is used.

I thank you for the test and the results. I will be buying one to test on my various rifles. But find it interesting you're shooting $3-5K rifle/scope setups but ran out of ammo. ;-)

So I'm curious about this... is it possible to test where you find multiple nodes for a given load. To see if there is an impact change across the different nodes. To find the higher impacting node ( if possible) to be sure you have the node at the top of the harmonic wave.

@ZeeGerman363 жыл бұрын
I ordered a stainless one for my 300PRC RPR but didn't get to install it yet. Then EC announced the black nitride ones so I got one of those for the RPR and the other is getting the ultimate harmonics test - an M1A in a M14.ca aluminum chassis.

May be a dumb question but I see you were using the magneto chrono. Being that it’s attached to the muzzle, won’t that play in to the barrel harmonics?
@ctclimberguy342 жыл бұрын
Did you find it was repeatable? If you take it off a rifle & use it on another then replace do settings stay the same?
@Snailz5 Жыл бұрын
Can we get a follow up on the repeatability of settings after swapping it around? Also, could we get maybe 4 or 5 3 shot groups rather than singles? It’s all well and good to see the thing work in concept, but increasing the sample size to show those initial findings actually hold up would be valuable for know whether this is a product worth purchasing.

Great video guys the EC tuner brake sounds like a good idea and I think I'll give it a try one thing though you never mentioned how well it helps on recoil and if I'm not mistaken you use it only on a Mac grade barrel well how well will it work on a factory barrel would be nice to know and see the results well keep testing hope everything goes well and everything stays in the bullseye I like all your videos good going thank you for information that I might be able to use

When you are setting up your rifle.....do you get the optimal powder and then did you add the tuner brake and start adjusting it?
@Tfox313 жыл бұрын
Typically we start with the bullet we want to shoot then powder and powder charge. The tuner brake would come once you have hit the variable you are “aiming” for, low es, sd, or velocity. Then tune the brake.
